WotC also sends their stores free promos and stuff to give out for casual tournaments such as FNM. They're actually a company that understands how to maximize profits.
Also no, it's not really a WotC only thing, because when I worked as a buyer for a large company (not gaming related but handled a reasonable amount of sales) I would get plenty of "Free Fills" (basically a case or more of free product) and other such things from the vendors, as a good faith gesture.
It's really only in the gaming environment, that I've seen such horrible and spiteful business practices. Luckily it's been changing more and more, with the companies that give away the most being the ones that usually end up on top. It's not even altruism, it's just the simple fact that if you reward people for buying or selling your product, they'll be more likely to do it and you'll have people out there going "Look at how awesome this thing is that these people do." as opposed to "Wow, this company is terrible but we put up with it."
Edit: Oh, and they also provide their judges with promo cards worth several hundred dollars. Even for things as simple as going to "judge conferences" with multiple panels about various interesting topics about the game as a whole.
