New Age of Sail game from Warlord

Looks interesting (especially as I have loads of the old Pirates cardboard ships, monsters etc) and hope it will be fleixble enough to let me use them and my Uncharted Seas ships

I'm intrigued. The start set is $70, although it seems really weird to not just have two French and British Frigates in the starter set to begin with.

It may be a replacement for Sails of Glory if it's faster to play and overall cheaper. If the rules aren't up to snuff there should be something out there to satisfy (like Osprey's Fighting Sail).

Yeah. We might as well wait a year and get it cheap in the 2020 Summer Clearance Sale.

Looks okay, though I'd have a hard time justifying this over Oak and Iron or whatever the other one that launched was.

This one looks neat. I preordered the starter. I tried out Cruel Seas, and while it was cool, I just couldn't get into the theme of WWII small boats.

I'm also curious about Oak and Iron... Which is just about the same scale (1:600 vs. 1:700 of this game). When Oak and Iron goes on firesale, maybe I could snap up a bunch of ships for Black Seas?

lol

I play...

Sigh.

Is it in a comparable scale with Dreadfleet?

Oh, I hope!

There will be generic naval warfare rules long after this game is OOP, and clearance priced minis are forever!

useful if they are a similar scale, and if certain elements are not horribly over scale, have to say the models don't 'do' it for me on that score, for Cruel Seas I went with IJA as the metal/resin models look so much better than the chunky plastics.

pity the rules suck and blow really

Not my cup of tea, so I'll be passing. My experience with the Cruel Seas rulebook makes it even easier - that book was riddled with errata, outright mistakes, and poor grammar throughout. There was something like a 10 page PDF just to fix the goofs in the core rules! Warlords of Erehwon left out a major rules section as well. They have gotten mighty sloppy at Warlord Games, indeed. When did it become acceptable for game companies to act like software companies? IE, release now with minimal proofing and playtesting, maybe fix it later?

key is "maybe fix it later", if it sells.

at least Test of Honour has been given a second life

found Blood Red Skies disappointing, Cruel seas is terrible as a game, to the point it makes 40k look thought through and balanced. Test of Honour 1 was ok, but so disjointed in how the rules were presented

even the recent release of black powder 2 had a fluffed up rule book

Unfortunately, it seems Warlord Games has gone a bit too mainstream, as have a lot of other companies in 2019 - pumping and dumping without a second thought, desperately praying it's a hit, and if it isn't...well, that's okay, because we have another new system releasing next week anyway.

Meh. Large-ish scale, and they put Brigs and Frigates in the starter? Where are the Ships of the Line?

Langton, GHQ, and Hallmark make metal ships in 1/1200, which has a great look on the tabletop. These Warlord ships will be pretty big, which is a shame. They could have done 1/1000 plastics, and current age of sail gamers would have bought them in droves, if they wanted to avoid popular scales.

Was skeptical when I saw previews. Hard pass.

There are two squadron boxes available at start. The other box has third rates. Also, both the French and British starters come with a single nation-specific first rate (which appears to be the only thing that makes the starters nation-specific). It doesn't appear that the first rates will be available separately for purchase when the game launches, though I don't imagine it'll stay that way.

I've got Sails of Glory, and it looks like this is designed to handle larger battles than that game comfortably could. That's a plus in my book. On the other hand, Warlord's been not so great lately. So I'm still skeptical.

This is kind of my issue with Warlord. They release a lot of small new games, but many of them are simply slotting into place of already established and successful (or semi-successful games). And those games are already niche...so why try to flood a small niche market? The WW2 plane game was pointless because Wings of War was already a thing. Cruel Seas was more unique, but this just smacks of Sails of Glory and Oak & Iron....so, why? Why push into a crowded market?

The guy making this also did Trafalgar for GW. So I'm guessing it's a personal project for him.

As for competition -

This looks like it'll more easily handle large battles than Sails of Glory. Can't really comment about Oak and Iron, though, since it's not out yet. But since this was only just unveiled, we don't know how long they've been working on it. It's possible that they've had this under a slow burn since before Firelock announced their game.

I don't know how the scale compares to other miniatures, as the only Age of Sail game I've played is Sails of Glory. Someone above mentioned that they're a bit on the large size compared to the industry standard, and frankly that doesn't surprise me. Bigger seems to be the rule of thumb these days for new miniature lines in niche categories. Oak and Iron will be 1/600, iirc. And Fireforge's upcoming line of WW2 warships will be 1/1800. There are other warships available in 1/1800, so Fireforge isn't blazing an entirely new scale here. But the most popular scales tend to be smaller.

Looks like a different scale of engagement to sails of glory. Sails is best played as a participation game with each player having 1 ship. This is much more fleet vs fleet.

Models look good, and much cheaper than sails' pre paints.

If warlord do want to half price Clarence sale it next summer I'll buy a huge amount of it. For now will look at picking up a starter to try the rules out.

it's the quiet ones you have to look out for. Their the ones that change the world, the loud ones just take the credit for it.

Can't be worse than Oak&Iron and it's 3 times cheaper for much better quality minis.

It looks to play similar to cruel seas, but with a added directional wind mechanic which I'm looking forward to.

Wish there were better sets available for preorder. Applying like their usual $135 starter set would be nice. Just did the basic starter box.

I'm curious about Oak & Iron too; the models for that one don't look as nice (though I've not been following it closely, so maybe they're OK?) but I'm glad they're approximately the same scale (1:600 compared to BS's 1:700). More the merrier!

I play...

Sigh.

One of the regulars over at TMP was provided with three sample ships to paint up. He reported that the detail is very good.

One thing to note is that these ships apparently use paper sails. From what others have said, apparently paper sails generally look quite good on a model. But as the model ages (and this takes a while), the paper will become brittle.

Being fair, its from Warlord and isn't Black Powder or Bolt Action, the chances of needing to worry about how long it lasts isn't likely to be a problem.

also find it being similar to Cruel Seas a serious turn off, especially if they have retained the concept that firing a broadside at a target thats showing its broadside offers no advantage over one pointing its bow right at you, to be honest there are better sets of rules out there.

models look quite nice, a bit chunky to stop them being too fragile, but other scales have a much wider range of models available right now - in some ways this is why this should use a more widely available scale - sell it by being a good set of rules and sell the models by them being better models.

The game may not last long, but historical miniatures don't only have to work for one game.

As for the scale - bigger scales are popular these days. It makes it easier to pick out the details. There's a thread cross-posted over a few of the naval boards at TPM suggesting that while players used to prefer "accurate" scales (i.e. one in which the ship was scaled accurately to the play area), that's not necessarily the case anymore. Players (particularly newcomers to the genre) seem to be gravitating toward larger scales. For some, it's a matter of liking the finer details on the tiny ships. Sculptors can include more details at larger scales.

For others, it's a matter of fading eyesight (and yes, at least one person in that thread explicitly mentioned their advancing age in combination with their eyes as a reason for now preferring larger miniatures).

I bought a bunch during the Oak and Iron KS, so I'm passing on this. Once Oak and Iron delivers I'll see how I like the rules, and look at reviews of these rules as a possible substitute if I don't like Oak and Iron.

Uh, what? Did you write that wrong? Why would there be an advantage to firing at the side of a ship? There should be a huge advantage to firing on an opponent's bow or stern.

Wonder if they’ll do an age of piracy expansion. Some of the sets specify 1770-1830 as if they’re going to do sets from earlier time periods.

I wouldn’t mind if they go full Pirates Constructible Strategy Game and release ghost pirates and sea monsters as optional expansions too.

The sails are reportedly thin plastic, or laminated paper (they're painted sails).

And as a bonus: very close scale to Dreadfleet. Finally, I'll get to use those models!!

point was firing at a target pointing its bow/stern at you should be more difficult than one broadside on to you, which you take as 'normal' and which you make harder/easier largely doesn't matter (personally I prefer an oblique shot as the default, broadside easier, bow/stern harder, but thats just me).

however Cruel Seas doesn't have any such modifiers, it does have range to target, firing unit speed and target speed providing modifiers, ditto target size, but target aspect to firer is completely discarded.

I did ask this on the Warlord forum, they noted that if a player wanted such modifiers they were free to add them themselves

face - desk

or free to play a better written set of rules.

I get that larger models are easier on tired eyes, life is teaching me this more each year, just think a scale thats more widely available helps sell the game, the models are there, those who have fleets can buy in with just the rulebook, then if the models are decent and decently priced they will sell.

its a bit harder to get the buy in when you start afresh, especially with Warlords habit demonstrated with BRS of "rules are with the models", which rendered my 1:600 scale airforces moot and meant getting games locally was harder.

Just looks like a cruel seas reskin. No doubt it will totally miss the finer points of sail. Plus their habits of dropping games just months after release or trailing support.
