How do!

A nice chit-chat-chin-wag topic this time.

At the moment, whilst I like the armies, Destruction is feeling a little stymied, as we’ve only seen different takes on Orcs, Gobbos, Giants and Ogres. That’s....really limiting.

Sure, Greeskins (and Gobbos in particular) have lots of variety, and the potential for more, and Destruction is the closest of the factions to just being the power of nature (Greenskins don’t necessarily hate you etc, nothing is particularly personal, they just really like a fight).

Where are the human worshippers of Gorkamorka? Where are armies comprised of just gribbly monsters? And there’ll be other concepts my feeble brain can’t come up with, but you might be able to.

Gimme your best shot!

It borrows heavily from the 40K tyranids, but I quite like the idea of some sort of insectile swarm army. Could be done either purely as beasts, with huge units of smaller ant / wasp / locust type bugs and larger monsters like beetles, scorpions, giant spiders... Or you could have insect-like humanoids in there too, martialling the bugs. Buzz-off from He-Man???

I want Fimir =(

Their whole aesthetic is super cool and pretty unique and they could fill a niche with a model-count similar to Ogors or Trolls but more magic-heavy.

Playing mostly Necromunda and Battletech, Malifaux is awesome too!

While I do agree that Destruction could use more model types, I sort of feel like it's a bit strange to feel that it's not enough.

Order has more armies sure, but it's really just Humans, Dwarfs and Elves of different flavors.

For other possible destruction armies though, some sort of insect tyrranid-like army would be cool, Fimir are a good choice. The option I'm going to toss in to the ring, think up a way to make an all-beast army. Monsterous creatures of different sorts all in the same army, like you can do now, albeit poorly and limited. Maybe give them some sort of... psychic leader that's controlling the monsters and... ah gak, just made furry tyrranids.

I think a human Destruction Faction would do well. They may not need to be Gorkamorka followers or followers of the bad moon or behemat or what have you, just barbarian tribes, with a focus on taming and controlling big nasty beasts for battle, while being unaligned to Chaos.

I think some kind of Shamanistic/Druidic monster army could be a lot of fun.

We kinda got that with the Ice Ogres, but not quite to my fancy.

An embittered Druidic race who sees all the conflict between Gods and the damage done to the realms and are sick of it could be fun.

Kind of a High Fantasy Ra's Al Ghul concept. An army composed of different elementals summoned by the Druids with the express purpose of burning it all down and letting the Realms reset naturally.

Each unit type could be themed to a realm with Realmstone at their core. I'm quickly talking myself into another "Counts As" army I think.

I think Fimir would fill that role nicely; the idea that they want to return the world to a more primal state fits them nicely. Also due to their historic 'hidden in the mists' fluff it wouldn't cause trouble writing them into the fluff as something that had always been there but largely unnoticed.

And it should go without saying that one piece of their fluff should be 100% gone and never mentioned or referenced.

While that is true and I'd very much enjoy it, my idea requires 100% more swirly bs in the sculpting and is thus far more likely

I agree. The fact that they were a matriarchal society was ridiculous.

I really like this concept, and my personal take on it (not sure how cannon friendly this is) could be that this is where the Wood Elves went. Since they're no longer a faction I think this could be a nice way to bring them back similarly to how Lumineth are a new version of High Elves in a way. This could be the Wood Elves becoming an angry destructive force that just want to reclaim space for nature and destroy anyone and anything that gets in their way.

I like the idea of an army of angry wood elves riding wolves and giant moose or elk, supported by big forest beasts they've tamed and skirmishing sneaky elves

Hm, it comes to mind that Lumineth have got this thing with channeling elemental spirits of their home realm... what would a faction channeling the spirits of Ghur look like? Certainly wouldn't be a part of Order...

Maybe Kurnothi as destruction?

Stone Golems with different animalistic designs would be my first thought.

I do like the idea of tying it to a Wood Elves/Kurnoth reimagining as that very much has been their approach many times already.

Kinda new to the Fimir stuff, you talking about the whole abducting human women thing? Not sure why you guys are tiptoeing around that like it's a particularly controversial thing. Given the direction GW goes with it's content, they would certainly never include that as a detail in a battletome if they ever chose to go with them.

It would also be interesting to see them as a destruction race out of spite, given that they were effectively abandoned by the Chaos Gods for humanity in the Old World. Give them a preference for hunting down and destroying mankind in both order and chaos out of jealousy and anger.

Not exactly new, but maybe Chaos Dwarves? I know they've got the "Chaos" in the name, but they don't really worship the Chaos gods, AFAIK.

Also aligning them with Destruction could be an easy way to represent Greenskin Slaves.

They are already in the fluff as Chaos, and they play an important role in manufacturing equipment for Slaves to Darkness.

Ah, ok...didn't follow their recent fluff. Ignore my pitch then

Kinda boring and open-ended, but I think what could work is a doomsday cult of humans, aleves, duardin and anything other applicable sentient creatures who dream of the utter destruction of the Mortal Realms leaving nothing left in their nihilism. Could be plagued by dreams and visions of the End Times of the world that was and want to ensure that annihilation is complete leaving nothing. Not Chaos, not Death, not even Gorkamorka in the end (though Orruks still ally as they like the cult's moxy and don't really think they can accomplish total destruction).

Also, Destruction dragon king armies does sound pretty cool.

While used a lot now, troll army.

Convert up a dankhold troggoth to represent throgg to lead them.
This gives you flexibility of differing trolls straight away.

Gargant? Massive troll king.
Or a dankhold troggoth riding something like a colossal squig.

Ironically this is why my gloomspite army consists of essentially squigs and trolls and nothing more.

B.c humans normally have a structure, a militia, a society, which is order. Remember this is the aftermath of the Age of Chaos, humans can no survive as small tribes in the wild like destruction armies can, so why would humans be living like a Destruction life?

Another army in Destruction that is Giant/Ogre/Green? Hmm Honestly Fimir or Wolves style army would be perfect.

So, a bit of mixed head-canon.

When I look at the grand alliances, I tend to break them up into “Order” as being DnD good, “Death” as being DnD lawful, “Chaos” as being DnD evil, and “Destruction” as being DnD chaotic.

As such, tropes that fall into DnD’s chaotic spectrum could be noble savages, organized crime (organization notwithstanding, they can only really operate in the presence of another organizational structure), pirates, brigands, mercenaries, Vikings.

In the end, the Destruction alliance is all about might makes right. No cohesive goals. Non-evil, non-good nihilism. I want it, I’m able to take it, so I will.

They tend to eschew sadism, at least to the degree of torturing someone so that their soul is extra tasty, or primed to be sacrificed towards an extra dimensional being. That’s more of a Chaos (evil) thing.

One could take the trope of freedom fighter, but I feel that’s more of a (good) trope instead. But there are possible exceptions, so maybe.

For example, Warmahordes has the “Circle of Oboros” faction, that is basically druids, werewolves, creatures, and stone golems. Feels like it would be a perfect fit.

I like the conclusions you reached, but the basis of forcing Grand Alliances into the D&D morality chart falls flat for me. Order can roughly be seen as a stand in for lawful (but DEFINITELY not for good), while Chaos can be a rough stand in for Evil. But in both cases summarizing the grand alliance like that implies a very different circumstance to what they actually are. Death definitely isn't lawful. If anything Death hits all the breaking points of the D&D alignment system and goes off to something else entirely. Destruction is the only grand alliance that can really be put on that chart accurately, with chaotic neutral being a pretty good match to what the alliance is.

I personnaly would go for the follower of Kurnoth has being part of the Destruction Grand Alliance. They are too savage too be Order and opposed to Chaos. Plus, it would be nice to have a Destruction faction that is more sleek and swift instead of brutes like Orruks, Ogors, Gargants and the likes.

I would thus see a mix of centaurs, satyrs, fauns, faes and assorted hunting animals. So an extansion of the Beastgrave faction Skaeth Wild Hunt. I'd give them a friendly disposition to Sylvaneths and maybe towads Idoneths, but a really big teeth towards "industrial" factions.

Despite their ties to Chaos, Skaven should have been Destruction from the launch of AoS in my opinion.
