Welcome all to the 112nd round of the Dakka Painting challenge. For the unfamiliar, this is a friendly painting competition open to members of all skill levels and experience, whether your entry is your first or you thousand-and-first time painting miniatures. Each month, finished entries are collected into a thread where the community can vote on their favorite pieces, and those votes go towards an annual overall League that runs for 12 rounds.

This month the topic is: Glow Up - Paint an updated sculpt of an older model (lots of choices there)-- bonus if you paint the older one as well. Alternatively, start with a low level character, and convert or kitbash a more experienced version. Maybe something like an old Ral Partha three-stage character, of a Frostgrave wizard and apprentice, as they're basically the same in game. If you want to be more literal, something featuring OSL or other lighting effects. If you want to go meta, paint or re-paint something you have done previously, to show off how much you've improved as a hobbyist.

How To Enter

- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You may enter at any time during the month, up to the last minute. We do encourage people to enter early, as to be part of the community, but if you can’t start until the 11th hour, that’s OK.
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.

So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.

These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.

How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of June and will end at midnight EST on June 30th. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.

This is the model I had in mind when I suggested this theme:

I used the little one all through 2ed, because he was small enough to screen with other troops as well as gain cover bonuses. The 1984 version never saw any game time because his 3ed rules weren't good enough for the points. I'll be stripping down the larger one, and redoing him with what I hope turns out to be a proper molten-metal glow.

Now showing various models from the previously adandoned projects!

Painting total as of 3429/2024: 56 plus a Deva King statue
Painting total as of 12/31/2024: 107 plus a set of modular spaceship terrain and two walkers and a quad mech and five giants

So 10th finally got me some new terminators. These 5 are a mix of the ETB Leviathan ones and the full kit. They will be used for when I want to field new TDA heroes, as there may have been a tiny bit of scale creep from when these guys originally took the field.

For the true scale creep experience you need to get the new giant plastic one!

Here's the weird bugger (proof pic), I'm also going out of my comfort zone and making him look like a lightbulb, already made him saturated yellow which I will be working onto lighter yellows, eventually making everything into lightning bolts to its appendixes.. yeah.. taking the theme literally ehehehehe *beholder noises*.. eek!

With Nevelon's permission re: the base, I'll be glowing up this chap:

...who, yeah, isn't technically a resculpt of an old mini, but I bought and assembled it to be a callback to this guy:

...who's just 'Blood Angels Commander' so far as I know, the bare head on the RTB01 sprue was 'commander' so I don't know if we should read into it that this is an early appearance of Dante (does Dante have a bionic eye, under the mask?), but with my thoughts on Blood Angels history I ended up deciding my guy is actually Lieutenant Tycho, before he got the promotion to Captain and the bright idea to stick his head out where a Weirdboy could see it (so it makes no sense timelinewise that he's Primaris, but I don't care). Accordingly I'll be attempting my first real non-metallic metal paintjob here, although also staying true to the Rogue Trader mini, so he'll have his little red feet.

Also a massive glow up from what beholders used to look like. I’ve got this guy staring at me on the shelf:
Spoiler:

Also while I had the camera out and the lighbox warmed up, in the spirit of this topic I grabbed some picks of new models and the old ones they replaced in my collection. Some are more 1-to-1 glow up then others. But a lot of classic lead has crossed the rubicon primaris. (plus some older pics from my gallery where I already had the pair together)
Spoiler:

And the evolution of my Dakka avatar over the years. I need to get a new pic with my current one added to the end

OK, that’s enough of me cluttering up the thread with my nostalgia.

Scale creep is like that. I should branch out and get some non-Ultra glow up shots. I know I’ve got some old lead Eldar with modern versions (3 generations of jetbike, guys in mesh armor) and other oddities collecting dust in the back. A couple Octobers ago I did a 3 generation Hive Tyrant entry for the comp.

And because I was on a roll and wanted to keep the momentum with the camera:

This is what 12 years and 21k posts will do to you. Heh. Looking at my profile it’s exactly 12 years today. Happy Dakkaversary to me I guess.

In a desperate attempt to have a useable force in time for Age of Sigmar 4th ed, I've bought a Seraphon Spearhead.
Spearhead's the 'easy in' version of 4th ed apparently, so that's where I'm starting. And I picked the Seraphon because it has a total of 14 models. Not the best reason to pick them, but I figured I might be able to manage 14 models!

So I'm going to do the Kroxigor for this 'Glow Up' challenge, and maybe one early Krox (27 years old, and half the size!) if I get time.

I'm thinking I'll do the 'Saurus on Carnosaur' thingy for the Centerpiece Challenge, and then the Saurus infantry in next month's 'Footsloggers'. Unless I get ahead of myself, and manage to get them all done this month.

Wow. Krox got mean in the last few decades. I have fond memories of carving up the old goofy grinning guys with wight blades back in 5th edition WHFB. Serious glow up going on there.

Do try to get the old metal one done as well. Love to see side-by-sides of old and new, and this is the month for it!

Do you also have the old-old one? Wasn’t there a version before the resin one with the old-school lobster claw?

Great stuff already. Terminators, Avatar, what more could you ask for?

In this month with The Law. The really old version from Citadel, and the less old version from Foundry.

I'll be doing the HGUC Gouf (Revive) which is a redo of the HGUC Gouf which itself was a redo of the old Gouf kit from the '80s.

Alas, I do not. It's quite a rare model these days.

Here's what the actual model looked like. I'll certainly try my best to replicate the colours. With maybe a few more shades and highlights.

I'm going to paint some dragon ogres this month, the plastic replacements for the old metal ones. Sadly I don't have any old ones as a comparison

I knew Yarrick had the lobster, but for some reason thought they both did. My mistake.

Started on one a whiiiile back but never finished it because this is a weird and goofy model for a Dwarf, and a Witchhunter.
It is large, beardless (goatee doesn't count as a beard), wide-faced, with a wizard scepter and a pirate cutlas. Do not like it.
Then, I am sorting my reaper packs and discover that I must have bought 2 more of this same model, at different times, so, I have 3.
Perfect conversion opportunity for the Glowup, because this guy sucks!

Here is the 1

Other 2 (put 2 into one pack, they don't sell in 2)

I shall not stand for a occult staff or scepter on a Witch Hunter! Found this bit from an old pin-vice to replace the abomination with something steam-punky.

Drilled the face for putty to anchor in because the man needs a beard, cutlass has to go, and the shield/crossbow seem appropriate.

I would need to wait for my son to move out so that I could give a model this size his own room...

I'll be painting this terminator squad this month. These models represent a glow-up from my March entry in that, instead of crudely sculpted 1st edition prototype miniatures, we have some refined and detailed 2nd edition miniatures!

I think there are at 3 more generations of normal terminators. Stupid old plastics from early Space Hulk (I think), the recently replaced plastics (which were still old) and the new kit just released for 10th. That’s before getting into the HH stuff or chapter specifics. You can be painting tactical dreadnought armor all summer if you play your cards right.

I need to remember to paint a Blood Angel battle honor on one of my new guys in an homage to an early bit of terminator fiction.

Hi all. I’m going to jump back in to the old monthly challenge with this sadly neglected Skull Pass Troll.

His Glow-Up will be in green-stuff form as I need a “Mole-Troll for our latest project. I’m cracking hard on the pace to get this thing up and running for summer so I’m hoping if I get this one sculpted and painted in time I might even add another couple. Just need the challenge to kick my into high gear.
Cheers.

Mostly, on my phone.

Right, proof pic:

My glow up is 3 tiers of boss from Shadows of Brimstone: Gates of Valhalla, a Draugr, a Frost Giant and the Thunderforged Titan. All 3 will also feature different OSL for added Glow! At least, that's the theory.

Just wanted to make sure I was clear on this one, if I'm doing a new model glowing up from an old model, can the old one already be painted? I was thinking of doing a glow up of an old Island of Blood Warlock Engineer to a new Warlock Bombardier but I'd hate to strip and re-paint the old one.

You don’t even need to own the old one, much less strip and redo. The idea is just to showcase the new glowey version.

If you want to paint both the old and the new, that’s extra cool, but not required.
