Deadzone Update time!

It's all coming together...
Update #106 · Aug 14, 2013 · 19 comments

Following Ronnie and Stew's triumphant return from China last week, we've been busy! Samples were sent to painters without a moment's hesitation, and guess what just arrived at the office?

Our new in-house hobby maestro Dave got given all the terrain tiles and accessories that you'll get in the basic Deadzone box, and was told to work some magic. This is what he came up with. (He hasn't even started yet - blimey, he's keen!) As you can see, this is more than enough to play a game of Deadzone - plenty of cover, plenty of stuff breaking up line of sight, but still lots of room to reach in and move your models.

If you look closely, you might see that the terrain's not the only thing we've recently received... but more on that next time!
Gen Con Indy 2013

In other news, Ronnie and Chris are on their way to Indianapolis to man the Mantic stand at Gen Con. If you're going, swing by Stand # 1237 where you'll be able to chat to the guys, get your hands on a load of Mantic models, and see some unpainted plastic Deadzone terrain tiles up close! We'll also be showing off a preview of a new project we're working on - check this blog post to find out how you can get involved and win a prize if you're going...

Anyway, let us know what you think of the picture above in the comments section!

Hey guys To clarify, this is what will be in the box when it hits the shelves as a trade product. Strike Team gets a LOT more than this!

Yay! So glad I pledged for this now.

That looks great! That's probably two factions + two battlezones? Glad I went in for a lot more terrain though, not to mention more mats for a larger board. The blue terrain doesn't look very good though, much prefer the grey scheme.

No that's just what comes in the basic retail box. The KS pledges will include lots more.

Do people have to modify their surveys for Season 3? I piggybacked on someone's pledge for Dreadball, but don't want to bug them if the surveys remain set from before (they selected a Season 3 team for me and I paid them for it back when the campaign originally ended).

It's the planned retail box, which looks like the Enforcer and Plague starters minus the KS stretch bonuses, 1 core battlezone, 1 accessory sprue, 1 mat, and all the cards, dice, rules, etc

That looks to be about 1 Core Worlds battlezone + 1 accessory sprue in the pic, so half of what Strike Team gets? And I sprung for 8 extra battlezones anyway

Can anyone figure out what mantic means by this:

If you look closely, you might see that the terrain's not the only thing we've recently received... but more on that next time!

At first my eyes were immediately drawn to the sprue, but that's just an elf bowman sprue.

Edit: Ah, it's the alt-sculpt 2nd Gens.

Also, I really like how the terrain clips together, the clips are designed to be internal and pretty much invisible, or at least not to the extent that the clips are on stuff like the hexagon terrain.

Table coverage is really good considering how that's only one battlezone of terrain. 2 will definitely be needed to build realistic buildings though (which you really need if you want to use the terrain for other systems), so Strike Team will be able to do that.

Oh only one battlezone + 1 accessory? That's better then, the terrain looked a little sparse for how I envision playing which is anything from highrise buildings with 5+ levels to ship/building interiors, hence springing for 14 battlezones all up hehe.

Also, I really like how the terrain clips together

It's great innit, and a big part of why I went in deep for this KS and chose it over other terrain offerings.

Mmm, sweet, sweet terrain. This stuff is going to be great for damn near every game I play. Glad I grabbed a lot of it.

While Mantic's art direction for models and sculpts may be questionable to some, I fail to see anyone not liking the terrain. Great job, Mantic.

I hadn't thought about doing my terrain in blue. That actually looks pretty nice. I think I might just do it that way.

I'm from the future. The future of space

So I went and listened to the latest Mantic Podcast (from June, apparently) and was pleasantly surprised that at the time of the podcast Dreadball had three quarters of sales to trade accounts to independent retailers. It's really impressive when you think about it. If the same thing happens for Deadzone, that'll be a huge amount of miniatures sent all over the world, well over and above the Kickstarter.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better.

Where's the Mars Attacks info from Gen Con?

Topps posted a screen grab of a martian from some presentation... I want to know where my giant bugs and robots are! Are we going to see Deadzone compatible scenery?

Would it be too much to hope that Martians get Deadzone stats at some point down the line?

I also want to see that new kid MVP's dinosaur get repurposed like the mech suit was. Maybe the Rebs could slap some guns all over it?

Poorly lit photos of my ever- growing collection of completely unrelated models!

But in the internet age I demand instant news and gratification!

Where's the unwashed mobs with their smartphones ready to snap a bajillion pictures to plaster the internets with?

I'm sure we'll hear something by the end of the weekend. Maybe it's the jealousy of those attending while I'm stuck at a two week seminar for teacher "re-education" as we switch from state to national standards, and have to be told how to do my job by someone who didn't cut it in the classroom in the first place.

Maybe I'm just being a bit salty...

I was only kidding with you - I'm starving for news out of Gen Con too, but it is probably just too early to expect much...

Someday, I'll get out to Gen Con too...

Mantic answered a bunch of questions on their forums.
Morning all!

Tim from Mantic Games here. I am currently answering all the emails regarding the DB KS campaign (and there are a lot of them!), if you have emailed me rest assured I will get round to answering your email. By the end of the weekend I hope!

I'll address a few of the questions here that have been raised. Feel free to send people here and i'll do my best to answer them. There are a few I need to run past higher powers and will provide these answers on Monday.

1) Dozer, Gabe, The Praetorian, Drake, Syler and Nord are the MVP's which are NOT part of Striker and so will need to be added separately, correct?
Correct. These are not included in Striker

2) Blaine will be added as a free gift / teaser for the future Dreadball XTreme to striker (and jack?), correct?
Yep, as announced in Update 88

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/...e/posts/319116

3) What colour is the strike zone sections going to be for the "DreadBall Acrylic Co-prosperity Park Ultimate Upgrade Kit (Arm + Centre-section) + Ultimate Card Deck - $50"?
I will confirm this on Monday

4) There doesn't seem to be options this go round to add in your own 'custom' colours for the acrylic pitches now?
Based on previous surveys the update on custom acrylic has been low so it hasn't been offered this time.

5) Just confirming. Dozer = Teraton. Simian = Zees. Barricade = Robots. Spawn = Nameless. Big Mech = Sirens/Trontek?
All Giants can play for any team (Dozer although being the Teraton MVP is classed as a Giant... she turned out to be one chunky lass!)

6) There is no 4th delivery? We'll get all of the 'alternative' sculpts this time round. EG, all 16 players at once for the Season 3 Complete Your Teams Pack.
Correct. Delivery 3 (end of September/begining of October) is the final shipment for the DB KS Campaign.

We already have the season 1 alternative sculpts in the Warehouse and currently waiting on season 2&3 from the manufacturers.

The season three teams will be delivered along side the upgrades

7) Currently, the survey will not let you add in extra sets of prone markers, despite them not being released yet? - I really could use a lot more, having some experience of the game now.

The prone markers are part of the Upgrade packs, I will check if we can still offer these individually and get back to you.

Now is that crab nameless the multihex monster, or one of the keepers

can't tell as there's no base on it (but I want it now!)

That's the Nameless Guard.

This the Nameless Spawn (Giant)

The Praetorian is bigger than I thought and I can see why Dozer ended up as a Giant as well. Hope they released some multihex bases for the large pieces.

I'm glad I ordered a second Mech looks great (took the first as my free Choice)

The crab is NOT the multihex beastie. That's much bigger.

Finally, as they've been unveiled:

I scratch built the helmet on this, as the prototypes were not cast in clear resin. Do not take it as 'final' or in any way as official for shape, it's just to get a feel for the bubble helmet.

Legs on the Martian need to be about half as long to qualify as a mantic model.

Hurray! Martians!

After leaving that mind- numbing inservice with a brain- splitting migraine, it's nice for something to go right today.

It's quite sad that the first thing my eyes were drawn to on the Martian were how long his legs were.

Really seems to capture the original Martians' designs (not that they've changed much since). I wonder if we'll get a robed one making the international sign of the doughnut?

But seriously, Mantic HAS to release a set of Deadzone rules for these guys... maybe even Warpath if there's enough of them to field. I guess we could always just do a "counts- as" and replace someone else with them.

That martian is fantastic, one of the best models Mantic has produced.

Are they 28mm?

I'd imagine they'd make good veer-myn proxies considering the ray guns, chemical weapons, giant beasties and things.

And yes, 28mm.

Is it just me, or do pretty much all the dreadball figures just need some shoulder mounted cannons (like predator) to be awesome miniatures for the battlefield? Or is that asterian with a glowing palm a deadzone or warpath miniature? I love the idea of palm blasters.
