Thanks, you have to be a special sort of bad to ride a turtle into battle against the undead and oni . I was worried about painting him up, but I think he came out alright.

Well I’m at a proverbial crossroads, what to do next. While I haven’t gotten a game in (probably won’t for a long time ), I still like painting these guys up, and a faction is achievable unlike 40k. The crossroad is I want to branch out a bit, more genre than just feudal Japan, but no necessarily 40k either. So I have options for small scale stuff that I’d like some feedback on from you guys.

1. I have the Guildball Kickoff box set, and I primed the figs this morning. Though I’m not overly enthused by the look of the game, I have the basics and some metals I grabbed at Miniaturemarket that had damaged packaging. It will at least fill the time till my Ninja arrive.

2. I have been watching a show on Netflix ( always giving me ideas) called Damnation. Pre WWII Iowa western flavored political drama. Cowboys, preachers, corrupt sheriffs, prostitues and merchants all with their own agendas. It got me intonations a spaghetti western sort of mood, so I started looking at Blackwater Gulch by gang fight games. https://www.skirmishgames.com 3’x3’ play area with small sized gangs. I haven’t seen much in the way of western games played, I think it might be fun to make a old west style town. Plus the maker of the game is here on DakkaDakka and there is a separate sub forum for info. Some of the gangs that I want are cheap $15 for 5 metal 28mm figs (the secret fist-Asian themed gunslingers, and banditos with panchos )

3. I have also seen some stuff for Eden-the-game, which while interesting and the sculpts are nice, the price just seems too high. Less enthused here, especially since there seems to be no USA market for it.

4. Throw some ideas at me, or if any of them strike you as entertaining, maybe we can both jump into it together and feed off each other with ideas.

Anyway, the first Guildball mason player Brick is basecoated and has been given some washes. No pic just yet, probably later tonight. I also need to finish the last monk(ess), but not feeling her sculpt calling me.

Edit: Brick, mostly done. Should I go up to red with the pants? Looks like a good brick color to me.

Edit2: the beginning of Stave, who’s face is Dr. Robotnik from megaman

I’m going to try and do a tartan pattern with these players Dakka help me!

Little more work done on Stave, his trousers will actually be lightened up to a ivory/white, and I need to investigate argyle socks . He has wraps on his arms which I haven’t decided if I’ll make like bandages or like leather. Also his upper thighs both have wraps on them which will get some sort of treatment.

Lots of details on him even in his plastic form. I’m a bit sad as the metal version has 5-6 more pint barrels which are separate that attach to the belt but the plastic one has none.

Thanks , I’ll give those a go, wasn’t thinking of adding blue as I wanted to keep the mason army idea of red brick and grey mortar, but they have blue as the color on the website.

It was a D&D collector series piece, 1500 copies at $100 each. I found mine at Miniaturemarket’s store with a damaged box so I got it for $40 or $50. I got it over a year ago, so not sure if you’ll find one except feebay.

Well, stopped by HobbyLobby while the kids were at bible study. I picked up some scatter terrain. Two packs of 9 wooden barrels that match the size of the WizKids Deepcuts barrels that I painted up a week or two ago. I had bought some of these back when dungeon saga came out, not exactly sure where those are, but $3.50 for 18 barrels after my coupon is cheaper than the one pack of the deepcuts at $4.50 after discount.

They are smooth, so making them sci-fi is easy. So I tried taking my hobby saw and scraping softly around the edge of the barrels making sure not to scrape the rings. It added some woodgrain effect which I think shows up on this picture after using minwax early american stain on it. Same stain was used on the craft stick, so you get slightly different color based on the wood.

I’ve almost assuredly decided to get building a Wild West town and going with the Blackwater Gultch rules. These barrels kind of helped push me into it . now that I think of it there were some small squares that I could turn into cheap crates there too . Luckily there’s a store right next to the church, so I can swing in there tomorrow or Friday to grab those.

HobbyLobby is a great spot to find little useful bits. You can order them online, I can get you the upc or better shot of the package if you need it. There’s also a really large barrel package of 3 giant barrels for $1.99. They are bigger than the Stave figure each if I’m remembering correctly.

Sitting at the Orthodontist with all three kids now. Meetings tonight, so not much time to do much, but I did start on a building. It might be Wild West themed.

Rock on! The barrels look great with a bit of paint to pull out the color of the stain. You could drip some Elmer's Glue/white glue if you wanted to simulate one leaking (molasses, or something). And don't forget to re-purpose your Harlequin skills and paint a checker board on one- the old guys have to have _something_ to do!

I have no harlequins, but a checkerboard is a great idea

So like I said not much time today to paint or do other stuff, but still was productive after people went to sleep.

Front of sheriffs office, still needs a roof and a sign on the front. Not sure if I’ll do bars on the front window.

Got to cut the bars off for the extra lengths and position the whole section, but good enough for country bumpkin work.

Where most of the action takes place, behind the building where they try and rip the bars out with horse.

I’m hanging too much fun with this .

Little bit of paint happening.
I think Stave is done till I get the rest of the team to this level then I can work on the tartan pattern.

Also took the brown pants on Brick up to a dark red, started to go to a brighter red, but I did not like that so stayed with this color. Turned his grey bits cover to a blue one. I really need to expand my selection of blue paints , I think it’s okay, but no highlight color has been applied.

Also the team mascot for the brewers is done. Scum the cat in an orangish tabby coloration. Nasty dirty thing. I may have to get a metal version to paint up as my cat Smokie .

Also built a couple hitching posts and a water trough. Pictures of those will come eventually, once I start staining a bunch of things at once.

In a final bit of news, a worker was found dead at the eBay global shipping center. The wounds are consistent with weapons from the Kage Kaze Zoku Ninja clan of the Jwar islands. Video footage showed eight obscured figures skulking in the background shortly before the camera cut out. The global shipping center has checked all packages and the only “missing” package was one destined for my address. As I do not have a chimney I have placed a tray of cookies and milk at my painting station in hopes of appeasing them before I am dispatched. Though I fear that that is unlikely I have begun dressing in black pajamas and attacking my cats until they claw at my face. I hope this training will teach them to defend me against the minions of the Kage Kaze Zoku should they arrive .

Thanks Graven, hopefully the tartan pattern will help stave look better.

Well I picked up some new brushes. They are.....not good, they seem to be holding lots of water and the colors are puddling on the models. Back to the other brushes .

Anyway I am trying the wood stain on the hitching posts trough and bare resin scatter terrain. It seems to be okay.

Well I went ahead and late pledged for the Blackwater gultch minions and monsters Kickstarter. Another project I know, I know, I know . Finish something Theo. Well I’ve heard that voice in my head for years and I’ve never listened to it before, why would I begin now .

So since I already have 8, yes 8 Ninja of the Kage Kaze Zoku inbound to me. The trail of bodies has left the customs area and is taking a horse and carriage to the Midwest. Guesstimated ETA is December 15 th to the 20th . Once they arrive they will take priority over the monks of the temple of Ro-Kan (only the one left), if she is not done before they get here.

With the Bushido figs getting here mid month, I figure next month (new year after all) needed something new...or old, as in old west. There is a skirmish game (with its forum here on DakkaDakka ) called Blackwater Gultch. Westerns hadn’t been even on my radar in my adult life, but I wanted non-GW skirmish game, with a small table that I can do without too much set in stone history. Well Blackwater Gulch fills that hole. Most gangs are about 5 models on a 3’x 3’ table, lots of possibilities to explore, and lots of fun movies to watch for ideas.

I grabbed a newcomer pledge which will begin shipping, per the update, in January. It includes my selections of
Blackwater Gulch rulebook
Blackwater Gulch loot cards
The Tall Man cursed hero figure
The Lawmen starter set (5models)
“Tiny” Lawman monster figure with Gatling gun
Lawman deputy pack 3 figures
Tranquility crew (yes the firefly tv show crew ) outlaw starter set 5 models
Most models can be seen here on the KS page https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/gangfightgames/blackwater-gulch-minions-and-monsters
Or on the main web pagehttps://www.skirmishgames.com

Until they arrive though I figure I’d start some terrain. So today I built a few things.

The town sign and a simple pile of wood for gunfighters to jump behind for cover. Nothing special, just playing around with the wood stain. The posts from the town signs are dowel rods which I have scrapped with my hobby saw to give texture to. The stain really brings it out, I’ll have to get better close ups of them once they dry.

More later .

Edit: also in the pic, Asian tombstones and two wall sections for the temple of Ro-Kan which are WIP.

Edit2: a new thread dedicated to my Blackwater Gulch stuff has been started in the Blackwater Gulch subforum. Not much yet, just a welcome and my basic plans. Please stop by and leave a post if you are interested in a Wild West sort of game.

You’ll get sucked in and you’ll like it partner . Now I need an orc emoticon with a ten gallon hat.

Ninjas have arrived , they seem the dull type as my ten gallon hat disguise have them thoroughly outwitted .

Terrible picture as they are hard to photograph(ninjas after all ). Paint job on them I see basic black primer with some Eshin grey on most cloth and some random red parts. I was worried about buying them as the sale photo was not very clear and the buyer said as is and there may be damage in transport. None were broken in transport, but ghost is missing one of his swords. I’ll probably just say the little thing in his hands is a throwing knife or smoke bomb.

Looks like it has all cards for them and the two clan pack cards. I’ll have to do some investigating of their rules to see what theme and equipment I’ll use. I have base of 80points of the Ninja now to send out on missions. The first is getting them into nicer looking pajamas . I may have to send them on a hunt in the old west at some time .
