OH-I Wanna get out of here

Any thoughts on making a conteptor sized shield (ala Major Tom's crystal brush dread from a few years ago)?

I was just playing around with a few bits, be fun to do a diorama in a theme of "Cocky marines" preferably including some dead Ewoks.

@Kepora: I was thinking more "Buddy Christ" than the Fonz, shame there are no "thumbs up" marine hands.

I'll try and make some sort of wrist mounted console as per the forge world model.

I certainly could. I admit the idea had slipped my mind until you reminded me, I've seen a few people make similar shields.

Tried painting that Vindicator IRL this time! So my first time airbrushing yellow in anger.

Despite masking to hell and back I still managed to get a bit of over-spray some how. There are also some parts where I used too much liquid mask when protecting the yellow on the recesses when spaying the black, so I need to touch that up as well.
Nothing that can't be touched up and fixed with a brush, then onwards to details, edge highlighting before weathering.

Shapeways has just released a new printing material which has a better, smoother finish as well as needing less cleaning, so I need to check how much of my current range is compatible.

Thanks everyone,
OMN.

Vindicator project is looking good!

Don't you just hate overspray don't matter how hard you try it still manages to bleed through, worked out quite well thought the scheme although I think you could do with breaking the grey up a little with maybe some black hatches or something.

So they have a new material any idea as to what it is ? Also I know you have mentioned it before but how do you do your clean up of the prints ?

Here you go LDD:
_______________________________________
How to clean Shapeways detail prints:

1. Wash in Warm water with washing up liquid. Scrub with an old toothbrush, careful not to damage delicate parts but trying to get into as many recesses as possible.
2. Carefully drain and rinse preferably through a fine sieve.
3. When dry, spray with a grey plastic primer
4. Once the primer is dry inspect for rough areas
5. gently file and scrape where areas look rough and where layers are visible.
The reason behind this is to use the primer as a filler to the recesses of layers and highlight areas to be cleaned.
6. Re-apply grey primer
7. repeat steps 4 - 6 as necessary until you are happy.
_____________________________________________ I'll have to see if I can do a proper tutorial with pictures for the tutorials section.

Buy anything exciting?

As to the new material ... It's Acrylate, made using direct light projection onto the liquid resin substrate.

From Shapeways description:
"Printed using DLP technology, the process uses visible spectrum light to cure the liquid resin one layer at a time. A resin bath sits above a high resolution projector which projects cross-sectional images of your model onto the resin above. The resin cures with exposure to light, curing an entire layer with a single pass. The build platform raises and this process is repeated for each layer, slowly building up your model. Support structures are generated to secure your model to the build platform, prevent warping and reinforce overhangs and other complex features. When printing is finished, we remove the models from the build platform and clean them from any residual uncured material left on the models. The models are then post-cured by UV. Once the models are fully cured, they are removed from the oven and the support structures are removed."

The grey is shaded but way too subtly, I should have added a darker shade to recesses etc. I'm hoping to break it up with weathering, oil / rust streaks etc.

Nice vindicator mate the grey and yellow looks very effective.
Overspray always happens
When it comes to shading I used to spray colours like hand painting and graduated to layers finely, more recently I go for maybe three shades tops and use shades quite far apart, once chipped and tinted a bit with oils it looks great !

However that looks good as it is !

Cheers bud not bought anything recently but have a few bits from awhile ago knocking around, I tried painting one up and a few lines came through so I left them for ages.
I found them the other day and thought I might give them another go, plus I have found a couple of things interesting on shapeways that I might give a try.

Alright, so, here are some bases...

… paint in progress...

… some finished examples (not identical to previously because of making ~ 100 of them...

...and some pics of a space marine that I made for my brother as a consolation prize for DoW III being utter rubbish. So I painted one armed with his favourite weapon; painted in his favourite chapter scheme. The chapter badge and and the numeral on the knee are both sculpted on , it feels silly but i'm happy that I painted the number “6” on the shoulder pad. I found it amusing that this colour scheme is almost a complete invert of my Imperial Fists.

Hell or whatever, may have frozen over around the time that I put paint on this model, I should have opted for darker shades of rust methinks.

Mostly I've been making space marines from the “Burning of Prospero” & “Betrayal at Calth” boxes, but who'd want to see those...

And 8th edition seems … interesting, I await the guard army list with trepidation. I kinda like the big marines but wish I didn't, the plague marine side's models look interesting except for those grinning not-zombie things, not liking the poses. I guess some head swaps might help.
Still semi-free rules is a nice change, will have to pick up one of the rule books at some point, maybe 2 as I'd like to move away from imperial stuff to at least one of the xeno factions.

I'm more excited about the new objective markers https://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/878862-.html

With those cranes and some of the other terrain pieces GWS have been putting out some nice terrain recently.

BTW thanks for not getting this thread locked or anything. ... I think you have to say my name 3 times, or maybe 5 facing a mirror, who knows.

Do you make every one of your bases from scratch? Or do you mold and cast them to make copies? Seems like a lot of work if you make 100 unique bases.

I make the bases from scratch. There are a few reasons for this, but it's mostly because I don't want piles of identical bases, I'd rather have the variety with every model looking unique and the freedom to "liven things up" from time to time
... that and hating casting.

Besides it took me months to come up with a look that I was happy with on the bases

It does sound like a lot of work but I like doing it as I think they look acceptable when finished.

Yeah I had to wait for the earth to come back around to pick me up again, plenty of time to paint but now i'm back and having just seen someone put half a tub of citadel basing sand on ebay as "vintage" and "rare" I kinda wish it hadn't.

I've not been doing much 3d stuff only using it to plan cutting plasticard etc. My usual plasticard dealer has gone from charging £1.70-ish to £2.70-ish in the past year for a 1mm sheet, so just planning.

Can't say I really feel up to messing about with pictures of marines so I'll just use words instead.

All I've got is the contents of the Calth and prospero boxed sets plus a few extras, most of the MKIII marines are going into an Imperial fists army and most of the MKIVs are being used to make a small word bearers force.

Both are in the 1k - 1.5k ball park and that's just infantry with the odd contemptor. I've not gotten around to vehicles yet atm that seems the more expensive part .

Initially I'd planned to use veteran squads for the Fists and tacticals as the basis for the Bearers though right now it seems i'm going the other way; the bearers have 2 plasma veteran squads, a contemptor mortis an apothecary and tartaros terminators led by a chaplain and delegatus, with only the HQs painted, the rest is just base painted for now.

For the fists i'm putting the finishing touches to the second tactical squad with those complete i'll have a legal (if not very good) army.

Here is 3 Imperial Fists Tactical marines that I'm working on:

These are just prior to oil washing, usually I'd airbrush the dirt over the lower legs before applying the gloss varnish to seal the paint and protect from the oils, this time however the gloss went on first, hoping to get the oils done tonight.

I didn't plan to paint their face masks black, I just kinda did...

And when they are all done and (MIG) dusted, they should look, roughly, like this:

If anyone is curious here is my Word Bearer's colour scheme as modelled by the force's chaplain and delegatus:

I don't really have a suitable dark background atm should really make something to take better pictures in. At least with it being summer it's light and things dry quickly.

That Red Scorp is tight. If you hadn't shown the green stuff on a plastic pad, I would not have believed you. Fists and Bearers looking solid as well. Bases went from "eh those look ok" pre paint to looking great after!

Is it weird that I actually kind of like the gloss finish i still don't get the marine thing but impressive paint work again.

A little burnt umber oil wash makes them look less like power armoured lemons.

These are ready for a matt varnish layer now, but it's just started raining so maybe tomorrow.

With these finished I think my army is about 1200pts

delegatus
master of signals
vigilator

2* 10 man tactical squads

5 man flamer support squad

5 man missile support squad

5 cataphractii with combi-plasma

Not a particularly scary force I know but it's getting there, once it gets above zone mortalis size I want to get some land speeders and land raiders.

I doubt it LDD, i've seen plenty of people who like the oh so shiny look.
I remember you don't like marines, I have a necron tomb stalker to make if that takes your interest?

Otherwise you'll have to wait until I get around to starting my renegade & heretics army, I have all the models and parts to make a decent sized force.

I still have these to paint after all.

Cheers whalemusic, there is still a fair bit of improvement I need to make with the bases, need to get better at painting asphalt and should add road markings, graffiti and drains etc.

Might make some more red scorpions at some point, just like the colour scheme really, even though in the fluff they are less than likeable.

Hmm If your urine looks like my marines you may need to consult a doctor and/or 1+ priest of whatever faith tickles your fancy.

Wow yes please LDD. means I'll have to buy a tactical squad sooner than planned,

I have a spare razorback and dreadnought around so I could make a small army :(.

Those 3 marines are now done, with the exception of powders, which i'll do when I have enough models to justify doing it.
