I REALLY don't want to sound like I am bragging, but a while ago I found myself with a couple dozen spare marines and some rhinos I got in a trade. Not wanting to spend too much money on a new 2,000 point army, I decided to do a rather small (model wise) army that few people played. I settled on Thousand Sons.

Well I have now played roughly ten games with them, and have failed to loose. The worst I have done is to get a draw, and even then I was only 20 points away from a win.

I have played a new guy, many intermediate players and even a couple veteran players. I'm beginning to wonder if I have either accidently created a great list, or am incredibly lucky. I have played against Space Marines, Deathwing, Drop troop guard, spacewolves, Tau, and Tyranids.

Was GW right when they said, " An army with two wounds has a lot going for it?"

How has everyone else faired against thousand sons?

I have faced 1000 sons once with my Sm's and I got crushed. Maybe it was his 10 doombolts a turn. Yeah that was probably it.

Any army can beat any other army at any given time given the right circumstances. Players can take poor army compositions out of lists that can provide nigh-unbeatable lists; i.e. it is very possible to make a sucky Iron Warriors army. Also, the experience level of opponents, mission objectives, luck and even unfamiliarity of playing against your army type can all contribute to a string of victories.

Heck, the Thousand Sons (like every army) can even be configured to be a pretty competent tournament force. Mauleed and Blackmoor (among others) have done pretty darn well with Thousand Sons.

But the fact remains, the army in general is at a disadvantage straight off the book when compared to other armies. Those that do use the 1Ksons well tend to have very similar lists that focus only on using particular combinations of units and wargear.

GW overcosts multiple wound models, not taking into consideration how vulnerable they are to instant death. Sure each model has two wounds, but since you pay more for each model you have less models (less units and less guns) in your army. When a Lascannon (or other instant death causing weapon) hits your units, you're losing the entire (expensive) model to a single shot.

If your opponents are having a hard time beating you perhaps it is because they are unfamiliar with the army's strengths and weaknesses? Because 1Ksons have such a stigma attached to them, the fortunate side-effect of it is that many people have never played against a 1Ksons army before.

The fact that they don't know what, where and how much to shoot or assualt certain parts of your army the first few times they play against you can only be a boon for you.

But the fact still remains that if there are two equal players playing against each other and one player has 1ksons and the other player has pretty much any other army type, the latter player is going to be victorious in most situations.

Ordnance heavy guard can maul 1M Sons pretty easily, as can IW.  They take advantage fo the double stredngth AP 3 ordnance to take away your greatest strength.

Having said that, a competent player with a competent list can generally do well regardless.

Don't forget the nice Chosen of Ahriman option, giving you necronlike teleportation abilities.

Why do people say that Thousand Sons suck?

1.because you beat them

2. because they tried to play them and failed miserably

3.because they like to play a different style army

personally i love the look of thier army and if i were to play chaos i would play them, that being said i know somebody who took them  to the top at a GT several years ago. they can be competative if you know how to use them.

now that I think about it, it probably is that no one really has any experience against thousand sons.

they have been treating them like regular marines, and are surprised as hell when I pop out, do two pychic powers and some 24" shooting while moving.

Getting my broom incase there is shenanigans.

You can win with them, but there are a lot of reasons why people say they are not very good.

For example:
A lot of bad units, and only a few good ones.
Slow
Very few scoring units.
Easy to win the first game against someone. Hard to win the second+ games against them.

But to genrealize there strength and weaknesses, they have it easy playing against most assault armies, and they will have a very tough time against any army with a lot of hight strength, high AP weaponry (Shooty Space Marines, Iron Warriors, Standard IG, etc.)

And Darrian, they were Bolts of Change, not Doombolts.

About when I got my 3rd Looted Tank, I had a nice DeathSkullz Ork army going, Demolisher, Bassy, and Leman Russ. I setup a game against a friend who plays Necrons adn DE and I was itching to give the army a try out. I get there and he's like "Yeah I want to use my new Thousands Sons army!"

It was NOT pretty for the 1ksons.

Yeah, any army with 2 wounds has a lot going for it...

Guinness: for those who are men of the cloth and football fans, but not necessarily in that order.

I think the lesson here is the best way to enjoy GW's games is to not use any of their rules.--Crimson Devil

Actually what would be your impressions if they could pull a "synapse" zone in range of sorcerors, such that they were immune to instakill (that would sound fluffy as well). Combined with the Chosen of Ahriman that could be a nifty little list.

I'd say that it makes sense to me and it would be very fluffy going off the Synapse rules for Nids. I still don't think it'd make them an overly powerful list that could compete with the top Marine and Chaos builds though.

I agree, but it would make them slightly different and gives those two wounds added durability.
