This is dire , i pray they get it back online soon i really want to play so many games online now it untrue, i hope that sony are going to give something back to the community as an apology for this shameful phase.

I understand that we don't pay for it but we all expect a degree of security and if it was any paid for service i would have gone mental by now.

You know what, just as long as they do the job right and we still are protected, I think I can wait, but that guy in the vid... sheesh, this is why I play 40k, so I am not crying over the system if it goes down...
Even though I am sort of crying over the fact that the online is down. Maybe a little reimbursment or something, either way, let's just hope it's soon... I'm almost done all of my new blue-rays I just got

It's pretty obvious that the guy is acting (badly) outraged. The fact that he was almost laughing at points should have made it clear

However, he did make some good points in the midst of his acting. Which I think was kind of the point.

Actually online gaming has become a staple of video games today. When a product is sold advertising free online gaming that is a selling feature of the system that people initially paid more for right off of the bat, so actually it IS what people paid for, just because it does not include a monthly fee does not mean this is what should be expected. When a company handles personal and private information of their clients they are expected to handle all information securely and confidently without error, especially payment information and billing addresses/phone numbers. Just because Xbox360 users pay a monthly fee does not make them superior to all other gamers despite what the 12-15 age group would like to believe. To tell you the truth, if party chat were to come onto psn there would be little difference between the two. All gamers are united in our passion and should never begin to squabble apples to apples when we are all essentially the same breed. Any ps3 users add me after this goes up ICEDOG1983, and for xbox gamers I'll be picking one up when Gears comes out and will post my tag then. Just my two cents on the whole thing anyway I'll cut the rant lol.

Yeah. Of course it has.

If I buy a game for my 360 or my PC or my PS3, they say nothing about a "monthly fee"--unless the game requires it, like in the example of a MMO.

The cost of the system, your internet connection, or the online service you're using to access the multiplayer portion(ex: Live or Playstation Network) is not the same thing as subscription based fees.

That actually has nothing to do with 360 users paying a monthly fee. The quality of the service, not the company and its data handling techniques, is what I'm referring to.

And enough of this "12-15 age group=Xbox" garbage. There's just as many squeaky voiced kids squealing in my ear when I play Killzone 2 as there is when I'm playing Halo: Reach.

Just so it's painfully obviously clear:

My statement of "you get what you pay for" is in regards to the service itself being 'downed' like it has.

It's slightly surprising to see the compromised account information, as the majority of times this is done it's someone being spiteful against the service.

Please do not attempt to compare KZ2 crowds to Halo crowds if you wish to be taken seriously, the fact that the system comes with a mic (xbox) means that more children will have access to one, I know and it sucks because I used to love gears online before the kiddies showed up all over it ( on a 18+ game no less lol )
Microsoft and nintendo have had similar issues, as as for quality of service, they both have their issues, one is not better than the other aside from party chat ( which is worth the 5 bucks a month imho )

Can't we all just get along? And kanluwen, do not mistake this for hostility, I LOVE people whose opinion differs from my own, you sometimes learn more that way...knowing is half the battle...yaddayaddayadda

Get what you pay for, my fundament. If a company asks you to entrust them with your credit card details, they are required by law to keep them safe. Choppy connections I could understand, but losing your financial details is not acceptable, free service or not.

You don't have all the facts, and have misread the article, the line above your post it says "may have been compromised".

There are roughly 10 million active credit cards tied to PSN accounts, they can't be sure whether the credit card database was accessed, but they don't believe that it was. (Source)

If they've failed to maintain the levels of security that they are required to do for storing financial records, and if those details are then compromised, the reimbursement would be for any money lost by customers, probably via claims made by banks that are out of pocket.

Remember the PS3 network has a option that is a paid for subscription service now called PlayStation Plus.

"These enhancements include the ability to have demos, game and system software updates download automatically to the PlayStation 3. Subscribers also get early or exclusive access to some betas, game demos, premium downloadable content and other PlayStation Store items as well as a free subscription to Qore. Users may choose to purchase either a one-year or a three-month subscription to PlayStation Plus."

So I think I am entitled to some sort of reimbursement. Sure it doesn't cost as much as xbox live but at one time it was $50.00 a year too. Of course if the network was down for only a month, it would be less than $5.00.

I believe that PSN will essentially be "resetting" rental periods etc for downloads on films and games so overall you don't lose out on anything you have paid for.

They will probably give away a period of time on the Playstation Plus for free as well.

I actually had a guy at work say that SONY plans to get rid of online gaming completely so they won't have to deal with it. Good thing he's Back of House and not Electronics, the most likely thing they'll do if they change the system(which they indicated they won't change how people access it besides the password) is make it a monthly subscription. Anyways, they already have a rumored price drop from before and if it does occur people will say that they're just trying to get people to buy them again.

Anyways, snap up a PS3 on ebay from the people angry enough to sell them.

Actually the electronics supervisor told me about the WiiHD, he had the biggest smile on his face before we burst out laughing.

The other guy owns both a PS3 and a 360, but only got the PS3 because it was a holiday bundle missing a game so we were going to knock $50 off of it. That and the lady who brought it in was incredibly rude before and after she returned it. Her husband came back later to rebuy it, but seeing as though his wife was a total *ahem* we decided that we would let our coworker buy it.

As a lesson, be nice to retail employees even cashiers. We had this couple come in to get the PSP limited edition with God of War. It was missing the DLC voucher(about $10 bucks), but because they were so nice about waiting we decided to knock off $30 which made it the price of a normal PSP.

So um, now Sony admits SoE gamers have been compremised as well.

Damn and I thought it was punishment enough to be still playing Star Wars Galaxies these days. Now your details are gone too. Ouchie.

Regardless, I believe it covers all their games SoE have done, so any Everquest, Everquest 2, Matrix Online, Planetside, Vanguard, DC Online and SoE facebook players should be aware.

Hmm, need to check myself, think I only did a free trial for Everquest 2, not 100%

edit - also, now that subscribers have been effected, will we see more cases aimed at Sony for their poor security?

Last, but most certainly not least, a ‘Welcome back’ program was announced. It’s basically Sony’s way of saying thank you to all those who have stuck out the downtime with a stiff upper lip. As of right now that means some (unspecified) free content from the Store that’s unique to each territory, 30 days of free PlayStation Plus membership (in other words, more free content from the Store) and free 30 day access to Qriocity, turning your PS3 into a streaming musical jukebox for a whole month.

Looks like we may be getting a little something-something afterall.

This could be very bad for Sony in terms of being compliant with storing card holder data, or their data center to be more specific. PCI compliance has incredibly high penalties for security breaches* were card holder data is compromised. Right now I would hope that the way this data was stored was reasonably well encrypted. You can probably figure that a company as large as Sony would have taken this step seriously to begin with.
