I think the two legions theory works. I read somewhere that they could have been the original traitor legions. And so as penance the Emperor sent them on a crusade against a threat he saw would come in the future (the tyranids).

Again, if it really is the two missing legions, why are they chasing the Tyranids towards the place the Emperor wanted to protect? And how are the navigating the warp outside of the Astronomicans influence (since it doesn't even reach the fringes of the galaxy, let alone outside it)?

We all know the nids are looking for more food This is a "WHAT IF" thread Following on - I like the idea of two crazed primarchs and their legions chasing them down - but the fluff already has the emperor killing the two and giving the rest of the troops or the ultramarines I like to think they are running from another scarier hive fleet controlled by another hive mind

Maybe it possible the Tyranids have come to this galaxy to get more food because they need more strength in order to combat a much tougher foe thus forcing them into the Milky Way Galaxy.

This is a "WHAT IF" thread
Selectively ignoring parts of the fluff to make theories fit isn't the best way to present a theory, even in a what if thread.

Wowzers, nitpicking much? the quote states "around a dozen".
Read the quote again. There is no word "around". That is something you inserted. There is nothing to suggest an approximation. Saying a dozen eggs are in an egg carton is not an approximation. It is an exact statement of a number. There is no logical reason to reject 12 galaxies just because it is 12 instead of 13 or 14. Numbers are numbers and whether one likes a number or not on the basis of being a neat round or untidy number has no relevance to whether it is true. There are 12 eggs in an egg carton even if one thinks 13 or 14 would be better, and the canonical GW statement clearly says a dozen. This is like how people kept saying Draigo vs Mortarion HAD to be metaphorical despite no indication it was. And now with the Codex out it is revealed to have been literal. In other words, in the absence of evidence that it is an approximation, it is not valid nor logical to keep dismissing the sentence as inaccurate based on personal opinion alone. Evidence should be used to form an opinion. Preformed opinion should not be used to select and filter evidence.

Hey Loki, i never claimed that my theory was true. I have no citation cos I simply thought about the question , mateand came up with a ridiculous answer - i thought one of the big no-nos was to blame the missing primarchs for everything. When the likes of IhateNids questioned it I tried to think to think of pluasible answers (I quite proud of the Ultramar response :-) ) .
Anyway I would genuinely like to ask where you guys get all your fluff from. I'm always intrigued how everyone seems to know what happened throughout the heresy, even before the books are released. I'm a relic from the days of rogue trader and my only foreknowledge of the heresy is a tale of the final battle printed in WD back when Fists were the yellow ones, bloodangels the red, and Ultramarines the blue guys.

my theory is the hive mind was created at the doom of the eldar, but the other chaos gods exiled its phschic presence out of the galaxy. Eventualy it found a star swarm of beasts that it easily manipulated to become the tyranids. The hive mind wanted to extract vengence, so slowy it edged towards the milky-way, the largest deamon infestation to eat every thing. revenge is a dish best served however nids will eat it. but alas during the end of a journey they encountered a super being that weakened them. It was known only as Robin Cruddace. Ignore the last part, but that might work.

My "the Hive Mind is a C'Tan" theory came from something like this, I remember now. This is how it goes as best I can recall:
The last unknown, unshattered C'Tan ate many Shards and the unstable energies caused it to mutate into a multiple being. The Eldar then exiled it (as it wasn't a C'Tan it didn't attack them) and it came across a race in a far-off galaxy and bent them to it's will. The Nids were born thereof. The Hive Mind/C'Tan experimented with the bio-mass the Nids created to see what It could make. All the work and spawning made the nids hungry so it sent them on a rampage to collect more bio-mass so it could continue it's experiments. It has now arrived at the Milky Way, and ran into a lot of trouble all three times it tried to get in.

The C'tan aren't psychic and can never interact with the warp. The Hive Mind is a psychic entity that affects the warp (the Shadow in the Warp). The Hive Mind cannot be a C'tan. Automatically Appended Next Post: Void__Dragon wrote:They're running away from the threat of a Cruddace-penned update.

If they give the 6th edition book to Cruddace, I think Tyranid players would all ritually commit suicide.

How do you know that the C'Tan wern't psychic? How do you know they can't interact with the warp? I'm asking for some fluff to back up your theory. That's all. If I recieve some of acceptable relatability to the C'Tan, I'll shut up. As far as I know, there is nothing going either way.
They were Gods. I think it is safe to assume they could do whatever they want, be it spawning nids or turning the emperor inside out with a snap of their fingers.

It's in the 3rd edition codex, about how they cannot comprehend the warp and cannot survive in the warp, and had a plan to block off the warp from realspace. I'll see if I can find my Necron codex when I get home to dig up a page number.

The purpose of Tyranids is to evolve not just to feed. Evolution is an arms race. The balance we see in the natural world has been created through many different animals (including us and our ancestors) trying to survive. Tyranids are evolution just sped up many times over. To evolve they need fresh DNA or it's alien versions to spawn new forms. Also by interacting with any defending life forms they are forced to evolve even more which is the prime Tyranid imperative. They aren't stupid because they have no sense of self and aren't smart enough to be stupid. They follow a path of potentially eating all life and starving themselves but this it due to what they are not any decision they made, the Tyranids likely had no choice is being what they are unlike Humans, Eldar etc. Note the so-called sentient races if the galaxy pursue a path that will certainly lead to them exausting all their resources just like Tyranids, only they are aware of this but do nothing to stop it. So who is really smarter or smart enough to be stupid.
They have evolved into the supreme organism. If one were to view the swarm on a galactic scale it would resemble a huge blob. This blob spreads out and engulfs any life in it's path just like an amoeba. The Tyranids have gone full circle evolving from single celled organisms into larger terrestrial organisms, then into a huge mass that behaves like a single celled organism again. At least this seems to be the case. Their habit of eating all their resources with no way to replace them is because they are the arms race of evolution gone mad on a galactic scale
I don't agree they are a C'tan because of the C'tan being entirely devoid of psychic energy and also being unable to use it. In additon C'tan are powerful but I don't think they are in any way even close to the kind of power needed to become or control the Hive mind. The C'tan all massively increased in power from feeding on the Necrons souls, that amount of energy would probably not come close to the sum total of the Hive mind's energy when you consider the Necron souls greatly empowered all of them.
I don't know what they would be running from. The two lost Primarchs and the legions is unlikely because those two would not be strong enough to defeat the combined strength of the Tyranids. Primarchs and their legions are tough, but they aren't that tough. Leviathan has so far only had one tendril stopped and the Imperium has found it actually lacks the military force to stop it even with a far greater number of Marines at it's disposal.
