Not necessarily the whole thing. a cross sort of shape- like a plus sign in cross-cut, instead of a square. So it's 'round', like a stick or a handle.

GENERATION 8: The first time you see this, copy and paste it into your sig and add 1 to the number after generation. Consider it a social experiment.

I get you, I'll give it a go. It might not work, all depends on the aesthetics. Im not doing it if it looks garbage

Here's something I've been working on- meant for the very bottom layer (or we could just do the whole thing this way if you really want) with a layer above that the 'normal' pillars will start on. It has enough space around it for mycellium and giant mushrooms to grow, while still 'supporting' the roof well enough.

Whaddaya think?

Nothing? Well, I'm going to start constructing them, and anyone else can start helping if they want. That, and keep making columns- I'd suggest pushing back more now, and out, instead of down.

That'd be the fourth one I've heard built on the server

Also, I have some aesthetic changes to make to the smaller pillars, either replacing the smoothstone slabs on the bases with stone brick slabs and removing the floating "rings" around the lava falls, or simply removing the lava flows and replacing them with stone or stone bricks.
I also think they're too close together, I'd imagine it'd look better and more spacious with at least half the amount (saving materials too), and if they're meant to support, lava flows wouldn't be the best way to do it, though I am basing this last part off of Tolkein's description of Moria/Zirak-zigil/The lonely mountain, which is how I'd like a dwarven city to look.
Lava flows aren't very dwarven to have as decoration for my liking. Sure, maybe a large smithy of some kind with a heavy lava theme, or the occasional hint of lava, but not cover the place in it.
I don't mean to sound this like I'm swaggering in, insulting all you've done and assuming control, but I'm just stating my personal preferences and giving some advice. I'll be happy to re-do the pillars to my description if you're happy to let me, then maybe mine out and build aforementioned smithy.

They were originally meant to have iron ore, blocks, mossy cobble or Lapis/gold/diamond blocks between each 'ring' (depending on the wealth of the area and what we could get the most of). I put the lava in as a source of light, expecting it to be every couple of columns- folks went crazy after, though.

I agree, the pillars are too close together... They need to be further apart.
Hopefully the RS Labratories has a big enough testing platform...

1 more day of people wandering into your house...

EDIT: Oh, and today I'm making an x-ray machine, only locates lava water and caves, though, not actual ores as that would be cheating + oo (where oo represents the infinite)

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I've built the x-ray device.
Unfortunately the Dwarven Halls being so, well, spacious means It doesn't function to the whole of it's abilities

'We need to go deeper', but not as far down as the Nether

so, yay, making one further away only accessible from the surface, sorry guys

I'm curious. Since the OP isn't present at any time, may I join the city briefly? Just as a base of operations until I can set something up. I'll pay tribute if it is required (not sure what though)

I'm guessing a piston which pushes a block into your face so you can see caves and such without suffocating.
Not sure what good it'd bring in a dwarf hall, but hey.

^Yep, shrike is right, but it only works with some blocks, so far I know it works with glowstone, but I'm testing to see if it works with other blocks, too
But, oh, you can suffocate if you are standing too close to the opposite wall
