Alright, I built a Netherrack Brick trail to the city's location.

Im working on a dwarven city at the moment on my own server, so I'd be glad to help you out if you need it. Heres my credentials

I think for now this one's going to be starting off a little smaller.

Dawi's location is right on top of this beautiful ravine, cut through with a winding, massive cave system.

He says he wants a 3x3 entrance (pistons, probably iron and gold blocks), and so the rest of the place will be based around a 3x3, odd spacing. I've started some small bridges and areas that can easily be made into dwelling places, walkways or public spaces cut into the walls of the ravine, and placed down some light. The plan (in my mind) is to smoothe the walls of the ravine so there's noplace for mobs to spawn, while being able to leave the inside of it unlit. With the lava at the bottom and streams of water and lava pouring down over the lit galleries, I think it'll look amazing at the end- like an underground Markarth.

Of course, there's still plenty of room further back in the mountain and the bones of the earth for a grand dwarven hall as well.

Sounds spectacular, I can't seem to find the entrance though :(

EDIT: never mind, I found it.

EDIT2: I'm just spitballing here, but I looked around the site and an entrance, or possibly secondary entrance running in across the water could be cool. In the pic below you can see the current entrance, and the Idea I have. wondering what you think.

Actually, you're very right. That could be awesome.

There's this nice cave above the 'first' entrance, that I'm planning on turning into a barracks and fortification- it could extend across to cover that entrance too- and I want to have pistons holding back lava above each entrance, for those pesky zombies.

Yeah that sounds awesome, and the lava traps you mentioned are a must as well. I had to fight my way into the mountains. When I'm on later tonight I might get started on that bridge, if there are no objections.

Is the main material for the city stonebrick or smoothstone?

I'd actually wait for now. Dawi had a list of what he wanted (a very rich list, full of metal blocks, obsidian and nether brick) and I didn't notice which basic stone. You can't go wrong with Smooth, but be prepared to replace it if needed.

Well, well. It seems you all get busy when I leave. And yes, I want the city to have a very dark feel. Lot's of obsidian, iron, lava, and fire. The main building materials will be smooth-stone and stone-brick, but cobble is fine for now. I'm working on the city now, but I may not be very active tonight overall.

Dawi's looking to use Iron as a building material, as in, iron blocks.

DO NOT USE IRON TO MAKE TOOLS.

If you already have iron tools made, feel free to use them or donate them to the cause. Tazz has kindly donated nearly a chestful of iron tools, so if you just can't use Stone, use those. But otherwise, either leave it in Ore form, or block it up, as we should not have any use for it in ingot form.

Use stone or diamond. Stone is best for large areas, since it's common and cheap, and not much worse than iron. The sort of excavation needed for a Dwarven Hall will devour dozens of diamond picks, much less Iron. And all Iron Grinders are much, much too slow to reliably or quickly make iron blocks in the quantities that will be required.

AGAIN, DON'T USE IRON TO MAKE TOOLS. USE STONE.

I know i dropped off a load of iron tools i had stockpiled at my camp. When i get online later tonight il get to helping out with that bridge or work along side with whoever might be working on the interior

Sorry, I think I was getting upset over nothing, then. However, the point stands (and thanks, by the way) that Iron is going to be a precious resource on this project, and can't be wasted going to tools where it'll be used up. Be cautious turning it into bars, even, as those can't be turned back.

Its good to know what we will be using though. Every now and again il go on iron expeditions to try and up the stocks

That's why I've got a grinder, and one of the reasons I use my zombie grinder more than the dual spider spawner. It's slow, but when you want to use the Ore as decoration and building material, it's nice to be able to get tools, armour and ingots without 'wasting' anything.

I doubt I will be on for the rest if the day, but I built two test houses/rooms and added some decorations.

If I can pull myself away from Technic, then I'll gladly help with this. I need a good project to get me back on DakkaCraft.

It's an interesting thing trying to get a specific look and feel with just the basic Minecraft blocks. It's easier now that there's upside-down stairs and half-slabs, but still difficult.

I've sort of developed a column style that I think is pretty cool- it's up to Dawi to nix it if he doesn't like it, but for now I'll be using that as the major 'theme' I'll be working off of.
