I had alluded to that, we all have our own "challenges" that can make something like maintaining a healthy weight harder for some.
It is where it falls in the priority list that determines how bad it gets.
Our UFO friend here it could be in the top 3 while for others it may not make the top 10.
Society keeps distracting us to look for things outside ourselves to correct something we don't like... there's an app for that!
Lipo-suction, various forms of stomach banding/stapling, joining clubs/gym basic training courses, special prepared drug/food plans it seems to say you cannot possibly do it yourself.
Eat small amounts at regular intervals, raise your heart rate at a sustained level for at least a half hour a day and supposedly that is all that is needed to be OK.
Then you find out tons of other little gems to help you along... you know you should drink as little as possible during a meal so you can feel full? 20 minutes is what it takes to feel full so do not eat a second helping until that time... it is just irritating how often there is some "expert" telling us what to do and they know no better than the next guy.

I'm better now though, so here are my .02 cents: the fat-acceptance movement kinda worries me. Being really overweight really shouldn't be celebrated. We live in an increasingly sedentary society and the basic American diet is waaay too heavy on sugars, carbs, and fats. People need to be encouraged to take good care of their bodies. Does everyone need to be as fit and toned as Mrs. Kang? Heck no! But you need to eat well and try to exercise, even if you can only 30 minutes of cardio a day. Being unhealthy just makes you miserable, and the fact that there's a movement to promote unhealthy living boggles my mind. I
~Tim?
Pretty much this. I've lost close to 70 pounds and 4 pants sizes since June. I changed my diet and get about 60- 90 mins of gym time (including travel and shower time) in 5 days a week. I typically do it during my lunch hour at work, which it looks like many of you get. Work at an office and want to decompress? Can't recommend going to the gym enough. I typically do a 10-15 minute cardio warmup followed by high rep lifting. It's not hard at all
@UFO - instead of bingeing, you'd be much better off allowing yourself some of those sweets as part of your normal diet. We've cut down on our processed food considerably (we cook from relative scratch 5-6 days a week) but don't completely cut out sweets. My guilty pleasure is red vines my wife's is dark chocolate. Allow yourself a treat as part of your normal diet and you won't binge on it later.
But really, lots of excuses here, and that woman, while fit, isn't in the kind of shape that takes more than eating healthy and getting regular exercise to maintain. Despite what Lena Dunham wants you to believe, being overweight isn't healthy. Lose a few pounds and your body will thank you. Plus you'll just feel better.

I get up at 5:45 in the morning. at work by 7. I Push carts up a hill for two hours. Go to class until 2:00 with a small lunch break. YEah I could exercise between class and work. But I would be sweaty at work and stink, My boss would not like that. I work for another tw hours sitting at a cash register which puts me to sleep(Sitting at a cash register at the end of the day is tiring, if im up and around I dont get tired) Then i finally gt home at 6. 11 hours of work. 11 hours. You think i can get up and go to the gym? And I have even more oodles of homework during the weekend.
I personally dont get why it is ok to attack ANYONE in general, let people live their goddamn lives.

Well, we have a whole thread full of insufferably self righteous bootstrappy types telling poor people on food stamps how to fix their stupid lives and not be so poor and lazy, might as well have an additional one with the same types helping out fat people not being so fat and lazy. It's kind of noble really.

If I don't exercise durng the day, I typically do so at around 8pm
I'm also pretty tired of all the overweight people that think wearing tights as pants or wearing belly shirts is an okay fashion for them to adopt. It isn't. But then again, I've never worn gak that doesn't fit me or my body type for the sake of being fashionable.
I don't think being proud of being fat is something we should espouse.

The good news is that no one is forcing you to participate. Besides, in the thread you're alluding to those of us commenting here were simply stating that we don't believe non nutritional junk food and sugary drinks should be covered by SNAP. Which actually ties into this thread well.

Yup. You play baseball and break a neighbor's window by being careless? Grounded for a week. Do it again, having not learned a lesson? Mild spanking. I'm not advocating BEATING a child. There is a huge difference between a spanking and a beating. So, yes. Appropriate spanking. But thanks for proving my point about how different things are these days. I rest my case.
Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

But guys, how will fat people know they're fat if we don't shame them, and show them a skinny woman? Stop ruining this noble effort.

I think all that teaches a child is that it's sometimes OK try and get what you want with physical violence*.
I mean, I'm not an expert. That's my opinion. I could be wrong and you could be totally right. But my limited, anecdotal experience says that corporal punishment is not a useful teaching tool because it doesn't teach the correct lesson and the people I have known who were subjected to it had measurably worse outcomes than those who did. This actually might make an interesting thread in and of itself, no shortage of parents in the OT.
*which isn't a bad lesson, since that's how the world at large often works, I suppose.

How is me saying I think people that wear gak that fits their body type making someone feel bad about themselves? I don't wear skinny jeans or tight fit t shirts because they look terrible on me because my body type doesn't support it.
Believe it or not, not everything is made for everyone. And that's okay. But I won't apologize for saying people should dress to their body type.

Besides a 6-pack not being the only indication of tone, I think you must be blind, or at the very least have an internet skewed perspective on what is normal and what is fit. Like the people on 4chan saying Scarlet Johanssen is obese.
And by the way, I have a full day just like you. I work 5am - 1:30 pm, hit the gym, then go off to my campus to sit in classes until I'm home at 9pm. We all have busy schedules, what you choose to fit into it is again, up to you. If I were in your position, I'd go to the gym at night and then go straight to bed, like you proposed.
Dude you don't know what the feth a full day is.
Please tell me how operating for 18+ hours isn't a full day? Gtfo buddy. *rolls eyes*
You're not doing 18+ hours a day. You're doing a part time job, farting around and then doing some evening classes.
Your average working mom would view that as a dream given form.
For what it's worth, I'd like to point out that being a student doesn't involve exclusively just putzing around, and it's certainly not easy, assuming you're actually dedicated to your studies.
There was a period of a few months back when I was working myself to the point of 2 hours a night on average. It got so bad that I was unable to actually remember much during that period, and even now, that series of months is still a blur to me. If you were to ask me anything that happened during the period of January through early February of this year, I honestly couldn't tell you.

I agree with your fashion advice here... And I honestly believe that if you are happy with how you look, etc. then go for it, but as soon as you bitch and moan about it, then it's up to you to fix it.
Do I have that 28 inch waist that I did when I was 20? Nope, but then again, I got married, got severely injured Mountain Biking, and ultimately got sick of being out of shape. Heck, I don't even want to be that small again. Simply because the main activity which drives my desire for being fit, having a bit of heft is a definite plus. (I wear the #2 jersey on my rugby club ) Sure, there are definite advantages to being a lighter weight, but ultimately, I believe that if you can build it and maintain it, you can definitely be quite healthy with more weight on your frame

In the Chaos Wastes, Killing the Chaos scum of the north
I don't find this womans pic offensive (being overweight myself) but I can see why some might, when I first saw it I did think she was telling fat people she has time to care for three kids and still work out, so why cant fat people. On that topic I dont work out as honestly I have a lot of stuff going on that mentally drain me, so I don't have the mental energy to go 'Well, time to wear myself out physically".
Off topic but I just want to say, people saying overweight/obese please remember that obese and overweight are two different things, those who are overweight are in no real danger of those illnesses and conditions associated with weight issues, and as long as there is no weight gain you are pretty fine, although losing weight is still good (I'll lose it eventually), where as obese is the danger zone, where you are in greater risk of all those bad things (stroke, heart attacks, etc...) and you are medically advised to lose weight.
Should I be amused or worried that this thread is attracting a veritable hurricane of attention?

The problem is that losing weight isn't healthy either. My little sister is currently doing her doc in kinesiology and told me a bit about her subject. Nothing is healthy about being overweight. It's a worse vector for disease than smoking and alchool. When you are losing fat, you're apparently releasing an accumulated amount of toxins and heavy metals that had been sealed in fat. And for those large enough, losing weight will also lead to the need for surgery.
Really, from what I get, the answer is to never let yourself go down that road.
