I'll be honest, I'm baffled whenever I see people fall for "commemorative tokens" and any promotional material like that, the fact that you actually have to pay to get the silly things just makes me scratch my head even more.
If I were a kid I'd be excited for the free model, I remember being hyped about getting a free skink model in a local wargaming magazine literal decades ago, but why a grown person should be excited about that is also beyond me.

the free mini is nice if you´re thinking about starting an army of the faction. This way you can try out a color scheme and see if you like painting them and all it will cost is some time and paint.

Didn’t they say competitions based around painting the model and other such things?
Maybe you can win a £60 voucher and get a free coin

The last time I entered a store painting comp (some 20+ years ago), the prize was a certificate or something iirc. Maybe they've upped their prize game a bit though

Am I right in thinking the DoK model is just a normal witch aelf from the unit set and not a special model?

Correct, its likely all the free models will be the same. They are not unique sculpts, they are simply cut from a regular box.

People seem to be talking about it as an existing model from one of the units, yes (I'm not at all familiar with those models but I'm getting that impression from this thread). Presumably it will be on its own little sprue like the free Intercessor from a while back.

Should be doing this for independents (along with an interest-free buy-on-credit program until the pandemic is under control) to keep them alive. GW is doing fine; the independent stores it depends on to be actual hobby spaces are folding left and right.

Yep, would be smart of them to look to the future and support that relationship.

Independents are by no means "hobby spaces". They're gaming spaces, and most of them don't even seem to bother trying to make that a real thing beyond the token green mat and scatter terrain.

My understanding is that GW is working with indies that stock directly through them. Here in the US though, some people still use third party distributors...mostly so they can put GW stuff out as soon as they get it rather than having to follow street dates.

I get that stores are struggling but I honestly don't think gw giving them stock on free credit will fix that. More importantly if a flg has its sole revenue and business centered in GW new releases that speaks of a greater issue.

Plus they'd just sell these instead of giving them out. Just look on ebay for the store exclusives that were pawned there. At least in store they can control that to a greater extent.

The Catachan Colonel models were meant for the shops to sell or figure out some way of distributing. Those were, in all likelihood, meant to be the GW shop exclusive figures this year hence the low model numbers since they'd give a certain number out each store's birthday and then do runs for them afterwards to fulfill the rest of the demand.

I mean yeah it's gonna hurt some independents by I personally plan on getting a free model if I can. I've always found painting female faces to be hard anyway and so I'm always looking for opportunities to improve. It's not like I plan to start an AOS army or anything. Besides the only way to resist corruption from the dark forces of the Chaos god of greed (GW) is through sheer psychic willpower.

Besides, I need all the models I can get my hands on because of my addiction to plastic crack.

For the first month or two, perhaps. After that, traffic will drop off and people will go for the model that they like or one that fits their army. Only the die-hards will be going for a set of coins.

Called my local GW last night, and the manager/sole employee was a bit curt.. he had gotten 2 retail boxes of Witch aelves and was having to assemble them all, and that was "his supply"

He was frustrated that he had to assemble 20 models, and hand them out first come/first serve, no purchase required.. and I wasnt the first person calling to ask about them.. he expected them to go by the end of the day

When I asked what he was doing with the alternate bits left over, he said he was supposed to return the sprues to GW

Sounds a bit odd, but then GW USA has often operated a bit differently to GW UK.

Not that differently when it comes to stuff like these 'in store freebie models' for paint classes. It is, however, worth mentioning that in years past those freebie models are designed from the outset for it. The Stormcast and Tactical/Primaris Marines are a specific model with its own sprue.

The extremely cynical part of me wants to think that the "unused bits being returned to GW" might end up in a certain employees bits box..

Do you mean entitled? Because I'm going to assume you didn't mean "people with the right to vote".

Either way, I agree.

This image from the storefinder website seems to show the next two coins which are Death Guard and Hedonites of Slannesh so maybe the DG Sorcerer which wasn't released as part of SM Heroes S3 will be their free mini?

I don't think that the Sorcerer will be the free mini sadly. He was from the paint set in Japan...but he might definitely be seeing some kind of release.

Hedonites is definitely going to be interesting to see what happens.

Can you imagine if it was that good a model

If for this one all they got was a few boxes of basic troops and had to self assemble.
They aren’t going to give away a special mass produced model. They could sell that for £20.

Standard figure from the box.
Or even more likely here. One of the three ETB or ones clipped from DI.

Honestly, they've said in the past that the Heroes stuff is not manufactured by them. They design it but it's manufactured by a partner in Asia for distribution in the Japanese market. That apparently is what causes the issues with distribution for Heroes and the board game stuff.

I picked up my model in Belfast today. Had choice between Wych Elf or Sister of slaughter build.

I didn't get both options in my box.

They had obviously just been cut from a wych elf box sprue, so I imagine it will be the same for all future months.

Makes me think Deathguard will be poxwalkers as that is a unit without specials
