I didn't design it with FDM in mind , though you could choose to do it that way. The quality won't be as nice though.

We have a friend of ours doing some testing with FDM.

both of these were printed @ .2, standing on it's nose with no support.

This one was Printed on a Formlabs form 3 with support for days.

Good to know though that it can be printed in fdm without too much hassle. If I can ever get my stringing problems under control, I'll buy one.

New Paint Racks have gone up! (literally)

Now with the ability to reclaim some desk space with the Up Shelf! People with the old paint racks can put them up on the shelf for even more paint storage.
The new Corner Utility unit unpacks to put the tools right where you need them.
Even a new Tube Rack for people with 20ml tubes of paint.

Wickedly good. I was delighted with the TRVs I ordered, and these will fit in right in with them.

Been A while since I've posted an update. Which I should probably do.

We've had a few releases since our last conversation, so, in no particular order, stuff.

The space camel is definitely on my 'buy' list for once I've caught up my backlog...

I'm amazed at what these guys can make by creative cutting of flat wood panels.

But as a product competing against 3d printing... gg.

not really as part of the "fun" here is building the stuff and you are able to make things 3D printing can not (large terrain pieces with fine details that are still light)

same as 3D printing is not competing with scale model kits

Given that most home-printed (and a not-insignificant number of purchased-) 3D printed terrain and vehicles at the moment wind up covered in visible layer lines, a good laser cut MDF and card kit potentially gives much better looking results. Particularly since with a lot of these kits, it doesn't take a lot of extra work to wind up with something that doesn't particularly look like MDF on the table...

Oh, I hear you on the 3D printing thing. 3D printing will eventually overtake most things model related from a quality/time/cost perspective, but it's not there yet.

Test build success! Even the railing worked. I think I'll beef up the attachments for them though. If only for the Standard version. They are a little squishy, but giving them a coat of super-glue will toughen them up.

Not at all the same thing. If I wanted another expensive hobby, I'd buy a $300 printer. If I want to assemble some really cool mdf terrain, I'll grab something from Miniature Scenery, Death Ray Designs, Tabletop Scenics, 4Ground, Promethium Forge, etc etc.

U-boat update.

I've completed the centre/control section and broken it down for a test run. Hopefully this goes together well, then we'll be on the home stretch.
Played around with the idea of producing a much simplified/smaller version, but I just couldn't take it seriously. I feel like it needs a squirt gun and bubble blowing device.

We have a bunch of new stuff in the works, but I can't talk about that ATM. Boss is on the way 'round with some u-boat bits for testing, which will be fun. photos of that prolly tomorrow.

Small update, exciting progress.
Test build no.1 for the control section has turned out even easier than I expected. And the deck looks awesome.
Just one or two minor tweaks. I didn't leave sufficient room for the tabs from the conning tower and I think I can reduce the number of panels on the saddle tanks to 3 from 5.
Also ran some super-glue over the railing on the conning tower, which has toughened them up considerably.

Let's build a U-boat. yadda yadda yadda...
Some of the smaller details and/or some of the details on some of the parts are perhaps not best served by the given materials . MDF and cardboard, for example, don't make for the greatest pair of 1/56 scale targeting binoculars or shapely periscopes. So I'm going to create some 3D printable alternatives for some of the more detailed parts of the kit.
I'm starting with the most obvious, the 88mm deck gun. The kit will come with parts for a reasonable representation which many folks will be perfectly happy with. Those of you with a hankering for a little more finesse and access to a resin 3D printer will be able to opt for the downloadable STL files.
The real Deck gun is a very complex maze of wheels and pipes and handles and levers which are probably a little too fine for a gaming miniature. So, I'm going to simplify things a bit, and thicken some bits for added strength and ease of assembly. The picture shows an
unfinished version, there a few more details to add, but it should be fine for a try-out. Hopefully it will not look too much like a sad demented spider when printed.
I guess we'll know in about 5 hours.......

Some say it's not the length that counts.
I suspect that such people don't have a four foot long U-boat.

As you can see, more testing is underway. The Model you see here is the HD version. We are going to have to simplify the standard version a fair bit to help keep the price down though. Apart from the easier conning tower, the deck will be reduced to some representative engraving rather than the seventy bazillion cut slots. More cutting equals more time, more time equals higher end price.
Also, the 20mm AA gun is super fiddly. I'm going to have to dumb it down substantially for the standard version. There will be file for 3D printing it as well.
Overall there are a few alterations to make, but most of the grunt work is done. The main bulk of the boat goes together super easy. barely an inconvenience.

Spotted this announcement on Facebook this morning:

Miniature Scenery wrote:It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of the amazing designer and model maker Craig Clark, aka. Mousemuffins after his battle with cancer.

Craig was been an amazing influence on a great many people across all forms of model making from sculpting and casting to painting and design, Craig knew it all and was always happy to share his knowledge and creations. Craig's catalogue of work stretches far beyond Miniature Scenery and includes things like Golden Demon trophies, Gundams, historical modelling and his new 3d printed model designs. I know he had plans for many more projects in future which made it hard to watch his illness rob him of his ability to create as his cancer progressed.

Miniature Scenery will dearly miss Craig and his amazing inventions but you have not seen the last of them. There were many more designs in the pipeline that will slowly be finished and released in due time despite the untimely demise of their creator. Craig would have wanted them released and (as soon as I figure out his scattershot file structures) they will be.

Rest in peace friend.

Ain't that the bloody truth.

Didn't know him at all beyond his presence here on Dakka, but it looks like the hobby has lost a proper creative talent.
