Back from my trip, but haven't picked up "work" again yet.
Bought a Hurricanium, the new witchthunter, the technicus and 25 of the new colors.
So far I have only had a closer look at the miniatures and unsprued some parts.
The paint has yet to be tested except for Dryad Bark which is an interesting shade of brown and a welcome addition to my repertoire.
With Hope I've met another bottle neck, the iron jaws don't look right, I'll have to trim them down soon.
I'm planning to continue painting my Remora tomorrow, we'll see if it really comes to that...

My review on the paints would be this:
Basicly the same as before but with more diversity and some welcome additions. The quality of the paint hasn't changed as far as I can tell, but with so many more different hues it will take a lot of time to figure out which ones have special features and which ones are the same old stuff, that you already have and don't need to buy again.
I appreciate the effort GW has taken to come up with an easy textbook approach to painting armies, many people will benefit from the new system. Also the painting guide is great for beginners, no need for a collection of WDs to find the article you were looking for, flap it open put it on your desk (simple yet great idea) and paint.
Must haves for me are the new white and black base colours, ceramite white and abaddon black, the new shades (bought them all but haven't tested apart from the blue one which rules), the glazes (not sure what for, but the properties were very very interesting when I tested them) and maybe the metal colours (even though I only bought the golden and silver drybrush colours out of curiosity, because I recently bought all the metal paints from the model air range, which kick ass).
Conclusion: Same quality, some new possibilities, lot's of new hues to test and dis/like.

A glaze is just a thinned translucent (less pigment) paint intending to modify the color below it.
A wash is just thinned opaque paint or ink (more pigment) intending to "wash" color into recesses.
Old GW paints were all translucent colors, then they came out with opaques (foundation paints)
Technically, nothing in the new range is anything groundbreaking, you could always make those effects. However, what GW has done with the new line is exactly what Big B said, reorganized it and aligned it with their new publication/teaching strategy, because mixing 1:2:1 ratios has always been a pain in the balls.
Personally, I like their new paint-teaching style, I think it will be much more accepted and cause better results. New painters will be less frustrated, because they can get better results and will be less discouraged.

Well, thanks for the break down, pretty much what I expected then plusI picked up the leaflet at FW open day and thought the direction was a good approach.
May still pick a few bits up as some of the colours looked different to the old range, plus you can never really have to many paints now can you

I almost tried the new paints out as well picking up a few supplies from my local GW. Unfortunately, time was against me that day, so I promised to come back after school this weekend. I might have to check out the painting guide as well. I think I know how to paint, but it'd be good to review the basics, as I think color-theory evades me... (hence the 3x repaint of the PMW bug-assassin)
That, and if I could learn to get my basic standard to what they've got in the books and save time in the process by following standard formulas, I think it'd be well worth the investment money.

This system might help things move along for you then, it seems quite a good idea and laid out well however I will still paint the way I know badly

The way I see it for me at least, is that it's new paints but the same old mediocre painter. The new colors look nice, but they also don't really look like anything I couldn't mix myself. Of course, the new white foundation and the washes are tempting, and the glazes are a definite curiosity. I'll be interested to see what everyone thinks of them, so I'll stay in tune.

All true!
@HF: The painting guide will not help you with color theory, it just shows you how to paint different parts of miniatures, like say gold. The approach is always the same "base, shade, layer, layer, drybrush and sometimes a final glaze" It's not a master class, or a complete painting class, it's a very well done lesson in the most basic painting skills.

Hey Neil, you got something wrong there! The pictures of Hope are old, that's not the current version, that was the first mockup during the contest. The new version is much much more complicated and very different.
My progress is kinda slow, but today I've solved one of the main design problems, the shoulder area and I'm now ready to continue sculpting. I'd say it will take another 8 hours to realize my concept in putty. I'm planning to start tonight, but need to relax a little first, so I'm off to play a round or two of ME3.

PDH: "Yeah Bloody Baiyuan's Bloody eye for detail . Bet he doesn't sig that one"
PDH: "I'm not saying anything that you might sig against me. Made that mistake before!"
PDH: "Thanks for joining Dakka and spoiling us with your work. " |
