Madoka Magica is actually super dark. Like, Game of Thrones levels of 'anybody can die a grisly death', apparently. Highly critically acclaimed, and in a way uses the relative innocence expected of the Magical Girl genre to counterpoint the heavy themes it explores.
Yep, and they actually trick you into thinking it will be another generic magical girl show. Its great.

Like I went into episode 1 knowing this, and I still can't make it through the first episode. It just doesn't grab me as an show. Maybe it's because its super dark and then only gets darker.

Oh man. I didn't really watch Anime back then, but of what I've seen since, I'd actually have to say Gunbuster. Bubblegum Crisis is a close second, and of course Ranma 1/2 is amazing.

Pretty much everything on adult swim and toonami, the artwork and story is what got me hooked on most of the shows. My favorite anime from the first few I saw in the early 90s is a tie between Yu Yu Hakusho and Tenchi Muyo. But I really liked the series that came a few years later, like Rurouni Kenshin and Outlaw Star wayyyyyy more.

Bubblegum Crisis, Patlabor, Space captain Harlock, Trigun. I loved watching those. I quite liked the OVA for Trigun: Badlands Rumble. A bit of an update on animation did wonders.

Ya I was never really able to get into Trigun, and I didn't start watching anime till the late 90s. I tried watching it later on but I just couldn't get into it. I thought the story was cool, but the characters, goofiness, and dated artwork kept me from finishing it.
If I have to limit it to early 90s anime, even though I didn't start watching anime until Pokemon reached the states, it'd have to be Pokemon because it got me hooked on the medium. But if we're going with "actual" anime then I'd have to narrow it down to Yu Yu Hakusho and Rurouni Kenshin. Both of those shows had awesome storylines to them, and I remember seeing them to completion (or at least what Toonami had available. I don't remember if Rurouni Kenshin continued past the fight against the guy in bandages that had issues with heat).
I did recently finish the original Mobile Suit Gundam, and started Zeta Gundam. Don't think either of those would reach "favorite anime" but MSG was a good series (both of those shows suffer from "I can't really stand the MC" which generally cause me to drop a show).
Edit: Finished Non Non Biyori today, I don't think you can put me on the Hype train for the second season, but I'd settle for the "Hype leisurely stroll through Renge's family's mountains". But it was a good little series. Probably one of a few series out there that actually deserves the "slice of life" tag.
Edit the Second: I just realized that Toonami cheapened me out of my Yu Yu Hakusho experience. I just learned the series continues after the Dark Tournament?! Ugh I think I have a new show to add to my watch list...

Yeah, it's been years but I remember liking Blue Seed too. I'll second(third/fourth/whatever) Kenshin, BGC and so on, although I only ever saw the BGC2040 so it may not fit the criteria. Trigun too
One of the very first things I think I ever saw and what probably drew me into still watching cartoons though was probably Robotech. Yeah, Robotech. Not Macross, Robotech. I've seen some Macross stuff too and it's fine and all, but Robotech is what I saw first. That and maybe just a little of Sailor Moon. I think Sailor Moon played on the TV as I was waiting for the school bus and Robotech came on shortly after I got back.
Oh patlabor was cool too. And Tank Police, that seems old enough to be on the list. There were some cool movies too... does anyone remember the Scifi channel (back when that's what it was) did the Saturday morning Anime or whatever? Good stuff. Demon City Shinjuku, Zeram...

I currently like Amuro in MSG than I do Kamille in Zeta, but that's not saying much. Amuro got really annoying up until the point he met Lalah. Those final like 7-8 episodes were better than the preceding 35-36 episodes. It's still a good series
I've not heard good things about ZZ, so I'll probably skip that. I've heard that Zeta begins to repeat itself near the end. My queue is currently all Gundam for the forseeable future.

How many people have scoped the upcoming Summer Anime?
There look to be some good ones coming. The Spring Anime were largely lame (Blood Blockade Battlefield obviously NOT being lame, nor is Assassination Classroom).
I have been re-watching the two seasons of Last Exile to try to make some miniatures for gaming (I am thinking roughly 8" long ships for the Ships of the Line, and then around 6" for the Silvana/Silvius).
And Heroic Age also presents opportunities for Awesome starships (It was greatly influenced by the 2003 Battlestar Glactica, if you watched any of the interviews with the director - they even ripped off several effects sequences from BSG for Heroic Age).
Also... Who here understands that the Wachowski Movie Jupiter Ascending is an anime done as Live Action?
I have a friend who said that the fighter we saw the Loading Sequence for (when Channing Tatum flies into Jupiter to save Mila Kunis) will be showing its transformation sequence (if you have it on DVD or iTunes, slow it down during the fighter's Loading Sequence, and you can clearly make out that the fighter transforms into a humanoid robot, sort of like a veritech).
Anyway... I have marked this thread.

Jupiter Ascending was totally Anime. It was also gloriously visually done, but sadly dragged down with the love-story. I think the whole thing would've been better all-together if they'd made it full-blown Action, with the main girl being a little more gung-ho about saving herself and her planet, and a little less passive 'damsel in distress'- heck, even if she'd decided to flex a little political muscle, showcase those belligerent family upbringings and emphasize her having some character growth- as it was, the only 'growth' was basically a sort of bad-aesop of 'accept your low place in life and appreciate what little you have!'. Despite her being the literal ruler of Earth.
I feel that an actual anime version would change that, actually.

And Heroic Age, Evangelion, Eureka Seven (and AO), Attack on Titan, Naruto, and COUNTLESS other, primarily action Anime don't also have love stories as a part of the plot?
Stupid fricking Naruto rehashing the same fraking flashback stories! Yes, we already got it. Kakashi got all depressed and super mission oriented after his dad died. Obito was the upbeat one. Would you please go more than two episodes without diverting into flashback arcs to tell us the same stuff over and over again!!
I'm actually enjoying most of the spring shows. Most of them are relaxing shows with a solid plot. No need for tons of drama, just tell your story and make it visually appealing.
So far, Punch Line, Kekkai Sensen, Oregairu, Food Wars, and Danmachi have been fantastic shows.
Kuroko's Basketball (while technically a winter holdover) is up there too.
Summer on the other hand really only has me looking forward to Gangsta, Durarara, and se fantasy anime whose name escapes me atm.
