at storag... be careful, you could poke someones eye out with this ... actually a guy from school does these too... he showed me a "pistol" made from a small taperoller and a cloth peg i think... that rubber gatling is for sure some awesome tool!...if i had a bandsaw...really... if i had a bandssaw...

thanks comrade... you soon will see some new stuff of said project i hopeyou all will like:

UPDATE TIIIIIIMMMMMEEEE!

here we are... this is the current state of WIP the airship is in... the parts are not glued to...well the propellers arent... the hexagonal sideways engines are... and the nose is too... but i just wanted to emphasise a point here

getting a closer look to the propellers...

how do you like them? my wife told me she is a bit biased about the axle of the propellers... too weedy looking...hmmm...?

and the nose got some serious work done... now all plated and sealed... and a nice nosejob done with string...

and this is where i am currently working on... it will be the wings... i went down a more VSF line of look here... i hope this is recognizable?... these are either meant to be attached to the engines on each side... or on the tail... i am a bit undecided atm...

they are made from cut-off´s i made during the time i built the blimps parts... waste is not happening on my desk... everything gets recycled^^... currently these also got a coating with tissue paper and diluted PVA... to give it a more sail like look...i think i later on will add some rigging with string... but that remains to be seen...

and now to answer your earlier comments dear fellowship...

storag wrote:Vik, the eagle head turned out superb, it'll be a shame not to use it. Maybe you can use it in the gondola?
I can think of a modular zeppelin made from two parts: the gondola itself and the baloon. If the balloon is damaged, the eagle-shaped gondola is detached and the folded wings spread allowing it to glide like a giant bird to make a soft landing.

i really like your idea... but i have tried to fit it to the gondola... and it wont do... there is no room there... and it is way too big... around a third of the whole gondola so to say...beside... the only place it would fit at all would then conceal the hexagon bulleyes... and that i cannot do^^
but your idea did indeed give me quite the buttkicking moement, you know... the moment you wish you would have thought earlier of such an awesome idea....

Awesome idea Storag!

yup... filed for future use for sure ... beside... reminded me a lot of STNG

thanks mate... and dakka really is my second home... so a day without feels more than just a little akward...and indeedy... a prow would be a cool use for that... but i think i will settle for a nice building that this detail will be a main feature of...

Klaus, not Santa wrote:Wow, that eagle head is A.C.E.!
It would be a shame not to use it. I really like storags idea with the detachable gondola.
Nevertheless, I have to say, just from a size comparison, the blimp body is too small for the eagle head...
Well, I've been there too.
Remember when I had to extend the entire ATHENA hull by a section in the early stage, and when I later had to chenge her from aircraft carrier to destroyer...
I don't envy your position right now. It's a tough choice.
But at least your tummy is better
Best wishes!

Oh, you could use the eagle head in a landing tower instead!
You know blimps need a tower to dock - and the eagle strongly reminds me of the Empire State Building ornaments - which top was originally designed to dock blimps

yup... the blimp is too small... for a true majestic looking animal... he would end up way too stocky looking and then be the laughing stock of any enemy...while even succesful in getting rid of enemies this way... there is such a thing called honor of battle^^...
and i have already put too much time in this project that extending the body now is a thing i would rather not rist at all anymore...too much work could go down to waste... tho i totally agree... that would be a good way... but the docking tower idea is as mentioned above something that is more than likley... more than likeley...tho time scale of this depends.... a crew to man this hulk of the heights is of higher priority

Theophony wrote:That eagle head is fantastic vik , maybe if you angle it downward slightly you could place gun barrels in the eyes. It looks lage enough to be a separate gun deck for the airship. That way as the ship soars above the battlefield he eagle's eyes can dispense justice on the heretics.

Glad your stomachs on the mend, that can quickly ruin a day.

Also it's a really nice hole punch set you have. I'm jealous of ha larger 32mm punch, largest I saw here without going to a different set is 25mm.

and it also was a steal... it only costed us 12€s... one holepunch of 25mm usually costs the better part of 25€s!!! so all these for even less...and... laser beams from eagle eyes... that sounds like a movie title^^

dsteingass wrote:Yeah! THat holepunch set looks useful! Even a built-in poker tool for removing the discs.

surpisingly i got rid of that after using it the first time at all... didn´t like the idea of getting ruined discs... it even has a spring by the way... maybe i had hit the punch too hard the first time...

Theophony wrote:

That's one thin I wish he set I have would have had. I've messed up so many discs its not funny.

hmm.... i ruined my first one due to the poker tool...

dsteingass wrote:Heh, I use an aluminum rod and a hammer to get mine out
that works too... and for my other trusty holepunch i use a poker too... otherwise those 5m and smaller discs only come free if i punch enough discs...

Theophony wrote:

Even on the really narrow ones? I have a small carbon rod that I use, but the end has enough of a point that it cuts into them.

well i often also use wooden sticks so hurting the discs is not likely...

dsteingass wrote:Yeah, It has a flat cylinder end, it mars some, but then I usually punch 2 or 3 before I poke them out.

Dr H wrote:Nice work on the eagle head.

If it's positioning you're having problems with maybe...*thinks*...
You could stick it on a frame that sticks out the front and not flush to the surface of the blimp....
Or, attach it slightly higher up so the tip of the blimp is into the chin of the eagle and the head extends up the upper slope of the front of the blimp...

I'll come back if I have any other ideas.

come back even if you don´t ...
for now the eagle head... or dragin head for that matter has died... maybe i will wake up on morining and the idea will live up again...until then it will be a metal and wooden beast alone...

Mostly, on my phone.

Love how the balloon itself is looking. I'm with your good lady on the prop spindles. As for the tail, not bad, but I keep thinking pig something like the dragon's artificial tail in 'How to train your Dragon' which iirc is in the style of the da Vinci glider. Just my random thoughts.

Woo Update.

Engine mounts = good.
The hexagonal shape works well with the blimp's shape. (been eating smarties I see)

Propellers look good like that.
Maybe the lower axle could do with being a little thicker as we mentioned earlier.
Good to see you tilting the blades (make doubly sure when you glue them in that they are all tilted in the correct direction ).

I take it the plates on the nose will be metal (obviously riveted). Is the string staying as scale rope?

Nice work on the wings. Recycling for the win.
Tissue-paper-sail-look sounds good.

my son for his fifth birthday got some of these packages for him and his friends... as a fuel so to speak^^.... now imagine me... trailing behin everyone of them and trying to get hold of the empty packages of them... well... i got two out of six...if that explains my woes
Is the string s

Wow, I missed the update .
Well I think the propellers look good, but as dr. H said, the bottom part of them should be bigger than the top, hopefully that can be done without cutting everything up.

I like where your headed with the wing design as well

Do you think that there is enough space at the end of each engine block to put a gunnery basket? Even if they are just anti aircraft, they could be great defense for the engines.

Vik, start with circles that are attached to the blimp frame and engines, your new circle cutters could help here. Then make a hole on the circle for the pivot axis. Insert dowel pin. Mount squares on top and bottom of the dowel pins. Create weapon turret fo top of pin, twin linked would be best. Create mirror of that to mount underneath on the square there. Then create a defense wall around both. You could have something akin to this.

As promised Vik, just a reminder of what I mentioned in my thread about your now liberated eagle head:
Use it as the starting point of a steampunk ornithopter!!!

After you've finished the Airship.

@SS: I believe those stabilisers are used on helicopter propellers when they only have 2 blades (e.g. a Cobra or Huey) to balance it all out. Any helicopters I've seen with more blade don't appear to have them.
