ChaoticFlanagan, I used extremely thin layering to get that effect. The paint is watered down and most of it is soaked off the brush so that only a thin glazed layer is left on the model each pass with the brush. As I add layers, I use normal layering technique (letting the last layers show around the edge more) to get a more gradual color.
Flachzange, I had someone else voice concern about that as well. I think it was the lighting and that many of the photos weren't on a white background. I think these are more true to life than all the rest were.
Deff Dread red Edition, Thanks!
Shas'El Tael, Thanks for stopping in! I think metals on the dread are some of the most varied I've done.
Mohaniker, Thanks! I really enjoy putting the models together for inspiration! Keeps me going x.x....
++++++++++++++++++++++
I hope the other Dread(s) is/are as easy on the painting as this guy was! They'll be a bit less detailed (thankfully x.x.), but that's just because the models are normal dreadnoughts and not FW craziness!

The Dreadnaught looks awesome he genuinely looks like the inspirational leader figure Dreadnaught's are meant to be with him casually watching the enemy before catching them in a rain of death from the autocannons. I also like the Cammo marines I've always been fond of the concept. To those who aren't why is Cammo on a 2M Tall superhuman trooper more dumb than that on a battle tank?

Ok! So I got bored painting normal Tacticals and decided my 'break' would be starting the Land Raider!
The green is about 60% basecoated, the blacks are at about 90% I believe. Once i get the green base color (scorpion green) down, it's on to highlighting, then weathering, then scratching and washing.
Can't wait to get to another stage of the process already!! Base colors are killing me!

InquisitorFabius, Thanks ^_^
Flachzange, Scorpion Green is such a PAIN of a color. Even over a light green spray, it takes a few coats to get it smooth! Thanks for the comments too, I can't wait to get to detailing and weathering this monster!
migs, I do have some! And I did use it on this! But even with the help from the green base, it takes forever to get it up to scorpion green. Its easier than going without (as I did with the dread), but still time consuming...
DDrE, So do I, even if it's painful to paint x.x....

Ok, just a small bit of info: I tried to do stenciling for the chapter badge a while back but unfortunately at scale I need it, and the many tiny details on the Sons of Medusa emblem, I just couldn't get it to work. Add all that to the curved nature off the space marine shoulder pad, and I was trudging up hill with no relief in site. So I decided to go with custom decals instead, and settled upon a set made by Tubal over on B&C seen here. I ordered a bit of decal paper from Papillio, picked up some Microsol from the model shop, a bit of Krylon Crystal Clear, and have finally gotten to work on making my sheet. I still need to pick up some Microset, which they should have in today at the model shop! So far I've figured out what scale I needed to get it to by printing a bunch of test prints and canceling the print after I got about a line or two of images. I printed these on regular paper, cut out an emblem, and dry fit it to the shoulder to check the sizing. Once I figured out how large I wanted it (I went with 25% scale in the end), I set the printer for super glossy premium paper/best quality and printed off a sheet. After it was done printing, I let it dry a few minutes, and set to spraying the sheet with the Crystal Clear to set the decals. Now, I wait...impatiently...for a whole day... The fruits of my labor though are satisfying so far

Oh, dont get me wrong.
I absolutely agree! It is a pain, BUT, when done right (like your guys I might add), it looks awesome! Because it is a great shade of green
And your custom decals are great!

Dread turned out very nice. Great to see a bunch of your SoM together.
Let us know how the decals work for you GD. I've been thinking about doing some but the only tutorial I found was using whit decal paper that you have to cut around perfectly or you have edges.

Man, I gotta say, only you could make such a god awful color of electric green look great on models. Going into this, I didn't see how it could possibly look good, but now, I stand corrected!

Thanks for the comments all ^_^.
Now for my first test of the decals:
I had expected a bit more of an opaque grey >.>...BUT, after thinking it over, this ends up working out for the best! The transparency ends up letting the battle damage/weathering show through and gives me a GREAT outline to paint the chapter badge over!
After a little bit of test paint that's where I'm at with the first try. It's not 100% just yet though, but already promises great things ^_-.

This army is looking great GD! I first had my doubt about the colours from SoM as well, but with the weathering they just looked perfect! It makes me wanna start an army of a relatively unknown chapter as well! May I ask, how you got the idea to start something completely different from any other chapters, and pull it off so great!
The decals are looking great as well, I quite like their chapter icon. It sure makes a good template to start the freehands!
Keep em coming, I'll be watching!
