I don't know if those of you from other countries have police that are trained differently, but our cops here are trained to treat every situation as a potentially life-threatening situation.

Oh we're polite, just not to dance studio running snooty foreigners. We know you aren't packing heat.

Ours are trained to assess each situation as it comes and apply some judgement and common sense. I like it our way.

Opinions are like arseholes. Everyone's got one and they all stink.

The only thing ive gotton from this thread and several others is that several people from overseas need to practice what they preach when it comes to tolerance and manners.

Heh.... What a double edged sword the interwebs is.

I've mentioned it, I don't know probably four or five times, that cops should use common sense and judgement. To exclude that idea and talk about nothing but the danger of stopping a guy at a customs checkpoint... is to justify any possible violent over-reaction by a policeman.

Taken to it's ludicrous conclusion, you could end up defending a customs officer who tasers a guy for asking the officer to say please.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Maybe you should have tried reading the thread.

The Home Office is launching a new initiative today aimed at providing the public with information about what the police should be doing for them, including pledges to be polite

It seems they also use mystery shoppers too.

The difference though-this was an internaitonl crossing, not your normal traffic stop. Drugs, organized crime and gang members, potential terrorists, even people smuggling can go through these places. The threat level is much higher.

Yeah, but the location is also a lot more secure. This isn't an officer stopping a car on a deserted road. It's a checkpoint with a lot of officers around. If the guy was a terrorist who insisted on politeness, there were scores of other officers around.

I don't really understand why a police officer saying "please" would cause the downfall of western civilisation.

Because the unbelievability of it happening would create an 8.5 earthquake that would sink continents, make women wail and men rend their cloths and gnash their teeth.
