Well, the first five Hybrids are ready for paint, now I just have to have a day with decent primering weather....

In the meantime, here's a wee man I worked on today:

He will be part (the nominal leader) of an Ecclessiarchy warband. What I still need to do on him: Greenstuff the various seams from the mini's assembly. Sculpt the stylised sunburst around the skull on his Big Man Hat, so that the combination of skull, filigree and starburst resembles the Ecclesiastical "I". Oh, and he'll need a base too I guess....

He will be unarmed, and utterly useless stat-wise (I'm thinking juve stats in =I=Munda, generally old-man level stats in Inq28, but with high Sag and Will.) Everything about him just screams self-righteous, pompous and overbearing, but utterly useless in combat. A nice liability for the more combat-oriented members of his retinue to protect. :-)

Background-wise the good Deacon will be a member of the Order of Blessed Reclamation. They're a variation of the Imperial Creed that is focussed on finding, and reclaiming, the various Relics that have been lost or misappropriated over the long Millennia of the Ministorum's existence. Some members are Indiana Jones type figures, specialised in retrieving relics from former (or active!) battlefields, alien-occupied territories and the wild space between and beyond the reach of the Imperium. The good Deacon is not one of them. He specialises in reclaiming Relics from other Imperial organisations or noble families through diplomacy. His favourite tactics is to use his skill at oratory and wide judicial knowledge to bore his target into submission... You see, the Relic in question belongs to the Church, it always has and always will, simply by dint of it's nature and existence, he just has to make the current caretaker see that truth. Usually by talking and talking and talking and.....

In the end, most "caretakers" will eventually gladly give up the prize, if only to shut the Deacon up!

My, it's been a while, hasn't it? But none the less, once more I emerge, like a Space Hulk come from the Warp, into the 40K universe....

Somewhere, somehow, don't know why, I got bit by the Space Marine bug again. So I assembled another Terminator for my Space Hulk project (which continues to proceed at a glacial, no make that geologic, time scale).
Here he is:

And his anterior:

I'm not entirely sure he is complete yet, the feeling has been nagging me that he is, somehow, too plain. I think I'll just leave him be for a few days before I render final verdict.

I've also started another model for my =I=Munda collection. He too is a member of the Adeptus Astartes:

He is actually just a testcase to see how I fare at making a true-scale marine. As such I've concentrated on the basics of that conversion, and paid less attention to pose and personality. Still, he is the very image of a classical Tactical Marine.
Any next marines will have more attention given to them, to make them more individual and unique. My plan, if this testcase works out, is to make 2 or 3 more True-scale Howling Griffons for use in =I=Munda. I just need to represent my favorite chapter, and =I=Munda gives me the chance to really portray a Space Marine with all the intimidating presence and grandeur they have in the background. As a typical size =I=Munda warband can only fit 2 or 3 marines , pointswise, I can lavish some attention on them. Plus, I really like the idea of a small group of Marines being sent as emissaries somewhere and getting in over their head in intrigue and plots. Sure they're absolute brutes in combat, but you try and be covert and inconspicuous when you're 8 feet tall, painted brigh red and yellow and people fall to their knees in adoration with every step you take...
Since taking this picture I've filled in his stomach area and sculpted the Griffon chapter icon on his shoulderpad. They're currently curing on my hobby desk.

I've also assembled and embellished a second Tactical squad of Howling Griffons (from the AoBR starter box), but neglected to take their pictures...

Hey look, activity!

For some reason, that single true scale Space Marine kept a prominent place on my workbench. despite me not working on him actively. Last week he got joined by a WIP Terminator, then another, and suddenly I was working on my Space Hulk again... I've got three more Terminators assembled, ready to get plastered in bling.
As an added bonus, my son was on a sleep-over this weekend, so I could claim his play area as a workspace for two whole days! Which resulted in a new Space Hulk corridor section getting ready for paint, the first one I've done in, uh, five years or so...

Here it is:

As you can see, it's a corner which is dominated by a major outlet of the ship's air circulation system.

For some reason the corridor as it is now somehow looks barren to me, it may be the large amount of white plasticard...
I think it will paint up quite nicely though. I just have to decide on a colour scheme for it.

This is what it will be added to:

Yeah, it'll take me a bit before I get enough corridor sections for even the first mission...
But hey, I'm not in a hurry. I'd rather build it well than build it quick.
Aside from finishing off the corridor I showed at the start of this post, I also got a bit done on a second passage. It will be a part of the vessel's Ossuarium, where the bones of deceased ratings are kept. No pictures, as it's just a jumble of separate parts right now, but I can say that it features enough skulls that I could build ten corridors without a single skull and still make the GW Terrain Skull Quota.

Now I just have to wait until I get another chance to work on it.

Hehe, touché. Do you have a specific New Year's eve in mind, or will any old one do?

Like I said, this only came about because my son was away for the weekend and I could annex his usual play area as a workspace. So progress on the terrain will need to wait until his next sleepover trip...
Mini's however, I could work on sooner...

To be honest, I do have my own dedicated man-cave, or more accurately, a man-alcove...

It's just that, like the subject it depicts, my Space Hulk terrain is a sprawling, over-sized beast, and as such, I can only work on it when I have a (temporary) man-thedral to inhabit....
To work on it this weekend, I had 2 3'x6' tables in an L-shape, plus another 3-4 square feet of floorspace for boxes, as well as room for my chair, in use. Basically, I took over the living room. And even then, I didn't even have the full scenery-bitzboxes out, nor any of the miniatures stuff.

Hmm, you should get your own workplace, like a studio or something!

I kinda know what you mean though. I used to have my own space when I lived alone. Nowadays I'm sharing a tiny apartment with my girlfriend, no space anymore for modeling projects and such. Perhaps that's why I'm doing everything digitally now, I dunno. But my girlfriend does have a separate studio where she works, which I could use sometimes. Maybe I'll get back to some of my scratchbuilding projects there...

I'd love to have my own dedicated workplace, but that just isn't in the cards right now. Plus I'd just clutter it up with random crap...
It's nice to have that digital fall-back option. I've found I'm not fit for the digital stuff, I can't fidget around with parts or quickly file something to make it fit.

I took the afternoon off to paint the recently finished Space Hulk corner. I just couldn't wait to get cracking on it!
After a pleasant afternoon painting in the sun, here are the results:

Though I'm calling it finished today, I may get back to it tomorrow and add some fluid leakage to the big fan, maybe grime the high wall grilles a bit as well. I'm not certain yet.

I make all my floor tiles myself from various thicknesses of (textured) plasticard. If you want to know what a certain texture is, please ask and I'll see if I can find the packaging for brand and product number and such.

My, how time flies...

I've started adding to my boarding party again.
Today I started on the newest member for the outfit, a hard as nails young lady.

Here she is in front of the savant, you may still remember him:

She is geared more towards hauling loot, but definitely not afraid to get stuck in. She carries a sturdy lux-wand in an overhand grip, ready to whack it down on any vermin hiding in the shadows. In her other hand she holds a powered boarding gaff (Inspired by Jess Goodwin's Imperial Navy sketches).

Here is a better view of it:

It's made from a piece of plastic rod and a recarved GK Power Falchion.

To give her more female proportions I've filed down the torso a bit, reducing the waist area and narrowing the shoulders. I've also slightly shortened her by narrowing her belt and filing a teensy bit from the soles of her feet. Addittionally, I carefully shaved the arms and legs to be a tiny bit thinner.
Here's that reduced torso, next to a regular one:

I'll also be giving her a more lightly armoured voidsuit with less massive kneepads and bellyplates. Several other support crew member will also get that lighter suit. Plus she will need ears and hair as well, that will be a challenging piece of greenstuff work...

It's good to be back!

Progress! Green stuff happened:

And she can hear now:

That was pretty hard, sculpting those tiny, tiny ears. I'm glad I managed it in one go.
What is left to do on her, greenstuff-wise is to add her hair, and give her a set of Arbites-style kneepads.
Once that is done, it's just a case of accesorizing and building her a base.

I also did some work on the next member of the crew:

A big brute of a man with his "universal unlocking tool"... I couldn't have a unit of Void Crows and not model at least one crowbar, now could I?

I gave him shims of plasticard at his waist, under his feet and at his shoulders, hoping to make him a suitably big brute of a man. But the effect is less pronounced than I had hoped. Hopefully it will be more noticeable once painted and sat next to his buddies. If I also make sure to cover his base in plasticard, I can gain another mm of visual height.
The crowbar is simply heated and formed plastic rod. The most hassle in this conversion is finding the right arms and hands, and then fiddling to get everything to line up...
He will get the same style of void suit that the little lady is wearing, so hopefully the arms will come back off without too much hassle.
He will be getting the same type of void suit as the lady above.

Right, time to play catch-up:

This is where the lady scavenger is at now:

All the greenstuff work is done, she just needs some gear added and a base and she'll be ready for paint. Behind her you can see the crowbar man getting his greenstuff work done, as well as the start of a wandering preacher in a void suit.
This is where the preacher is at as of today:

The rods on his pack will be turned into candles, and he still needs some other detailing done, part of it greenstuff work as well.

I also did a little bit on a boss for the scavenger crew, but he fell by the wayside as I need some more time to figure out how to do certain features of his void suit:

My =I=Munda project, after the short burst of activity earlier this year, has languished for a while. Especially as the last few months a (temporary) job had exhausted me and drained my hobby energy/mojo to almost zero.
The job's finished now, so now I can start slowly flexing my hobby muscles again. I decided to start by painting something bold and bright.

I present to you, Brother Rolan of the Howling Griffons:

The last known pict-capture of Brother Rolan, during the height of the Luyvan Insurrection, early 997.m41. The image was recorded by a security pictor inside a manufactorum near the Luyvan spaceport, hours before the final evacuation preceding Exterminatus. The Howling Griffons 5th Company performed desperate rearguard actions to allow as many key personnel and civilians to escape. As the 5th Company hasn't fought in the subsector since, it is unknown if Brother Rolan was among the last evacuees.

Brother Rolan is a battle brother of the Howling Griffon's fifth company, second squad. Brother Rolan is a recipient of the Aureum Gryphe (seen on his right greave) and has been awarded the right to personal heraldry, as depicted on his right pauldron. Both are unusual, as the lack of other markings or awarded honour-gear seem to indicate that he is still young in his career among the Astartes. On his left greave you can just make out the badge of the Jülich Sanction campaign. The aquila beneath it indicates he was present at that campaign's culminating 5 day running battle in the great city of Lorimar's Fall. It is speculated his Aurum Gryphe and personal heraldry were earned with feats of valour during this conflict.

Here's a scale comparison:

Rolan is made using Terminator Legs with hip plates removed and the recesses greenstuffed in. A torso made from a Terminator torso front (minus the arch over the head) and a Grey Knight Terminator torso rear (minus the psychic hood) with a 2mm spacer between torso and legs. The resulting gap is filled with greenstuff. On the torso back, I narrowed the vents of the Grey Knight torso rear to accept the powered armour backpack. Shoulders are Terminator ones with gaps filled and plasticard rims, the Howling Griffon chapter icon I sculpted in greenstuff. The arms are power armoured ones, set lower inside the shoulder pads to add length, the gap filled with greenstuff. I thickened the arms, wrists and elbow pads with greenstuff to prevent the "T-Rex Effect".

Brother Rolan will be the first member of an all-Astartes =I=Munda warband or a guest-star in a Inq28 scenario.
The =I=Munda warband will be centred around the idea of a "diplomatic mission": a single character (either a Librarian or Chaplain), sent out as an envoy for some official event or conclave, or to act as an advisor to some Imperial official or warlord. With him will be a small honour guard of Marines (2 or 3 at most) with maybe a Scout to serve as batsman/aide de camp. Unsurprisingly they will get caught up in something, being the 8 foot trouble-magnets space marines are...
In Inq28, I'll only ever use one marine, and then only as an NPC guest star in a few scenarios. I know what brutes they are in the Inquisitor rules...

I want to build the Marines one at a time, at my leasure, so this will be a slow-burn project... Especially seeing the other, non-PA, projects I've got running simultaneously...
