My vote went for 'nilla Marines. But looking back now, I should have chosen the Orks when I bought my 2nd Ed box set......
The Marines stood me well but.....My second army was IG and I stuck with them for ages, however not so easy to game with.
So, looking back, Marines are probably the best way for kids and noobs to get into the tabletop hobby..*sigh*

Well, basic space marines, because they're forgiving to new players, and are simple, also necrons are new player friendly. daemons aren't good for new players, I know from them being my first army.

Voted Marines, though I think Orcs are a fair starting army.
I have to say, as a WH player, with several thousand points, whoever suggested them as a starting army (10 of you so far) are horrific trolls. Yes they are wonderful thematically, and I adore my pure sister force (given the inquisition half of it got raped by the new white dwarf codex), but they were horrific a choice to start with; only half the dex is worth using, and the entire army was metal.

I would Say Dark Angels because when you can field an army of nothing but Terminators sometimes you don't need tactics.

So can Gk. They can field an army of Psyker Termies, with force weapons, or 2 wound Termintors( Paladins).

Grey Nights. You just need to buy 3 boxes, drop them into your boltgun metal paint bucket, and they are ready for battle. Then just pop them randomly onto the battle table, don't even bother read the rules, and start crushing whatever is in front of you.
Easy

In fact, legally, you only need 2 packages, Draigo and GK Termies, built as Paladins, to field an HQ and 5 troops. All for roulghly £45, or the US and Euro equivilents.

NOOOOOOO!!!!
The last thing we need is more GK running around going "Haha daemon go back to the warp" in a robin hood accent/fashion.
Also collecting-wise there great but rules wise... no there not.
CSM...Different, AND easy to learn.

Regular space marines are good, but I would say Orks are even a bit better. Space Marines provide a base which many other armies follow and are forgiving (in terms of there high armor save) Orks though are a bit more fun and humourous I think and a player will enjoy the game a bit more with them, plus they are forgiving too in that if you lose 10 boyz in a turn there will still be a ton more where that came from. Their reliance on brute force rather than tactical deployment strategies means it's easier for new players to work with ork mentality (shoot, smash, chop, stomp, etc)

Orks are fun and easy to play and paint, but on the painting side I think you're looking at a lot of models to get going, which can be daunting to a new player.
Vanilla marines and necrons have the green skins beat for that area, but SM have more options and choices that can appeal to different strategies and preferences.
EDIT: Marines are also a lot cheaper to start with which is another big plus for new players. Heck they can go halfsies with a friend on AOBR and get a decent core army for $55.

Space Wolves. Basically Space Marines, but with wolfy bits, all the wargear they can carry, psyker powers that make everyone else sick, and 4 hq slots.
They also get to jump into the deep end with rules arguments. It always comes up eventually, might as well start with it.

I'd say CSM. All the pros of normal SM, but a few extra cool bits added in, like daemon princes. A bit more complicated, but far better for teaching special rules, tactics and the likes. How would anyone ever progress if they had orks? And eldar are terrible for begginners: one mistake and you sacrifice the game.
