Free from chapter loyalty, and mostly free of all constraints from the imperium, working under an incredibly rich guy who would always be scared of me finding him heretical and chopping him up would be about as free and fun a life you could have in the 41st.

Or Mekboy. While I hate them on the field they're fluff is great.

If your a weirdboy then you will spend your whole life throwing up psychic energy and being shoved into a hut 5 miles from any sort of civilization.

I would either be a Dark Angel Space marine so I can kick some Chaos hide while looking quite grim/dashing in my polished dark green armour wielding a massive electrical sword. Fun.
Or a catachan guardsman. Some may say 'Why, you would be torn to pieces' or something of the like but my reasonings simple:
As a guardsman of the Imperium I would battle it out using a machete and lasrifle, but then again if you think about it most guardmen don't see proper battle in their life; they usually deal with pesky garrisoning worlds and minor conflicts including small bands of orks, renegades or cultists. Not many in their lifetime see the monstrosities of the 40k universe. Being Catachan would be an upside though because they were bred and raised in war, and if I could choose my commander it would be Straken because he takes care of his men and would be able to handle myself in war. Also the Guardsmen after a while if your forces are too depleted will let you go from the Guardsmen ranks and let you live out the rest of your days on a planet or ship somewhere in space.

A mid-rank Dark Eldar, little threat of assassination but you still live an awesome life and have a lot of power

You're the thought-stuff of a Chaos God and immediately erased from ever existing should they reclaim that warp matter to make a better daemon.

Daemons probably don't care- the lower ranked ones don't seem to have much of a self-preservation instinct.

I wouldn't mind being a Tau. They're essentially Human, but +1. Sure, if I'm apart of the Fire Caste I'll end up dying a horrible death, but if I'm water-caste I'm pretty much good to go.

All the benefits of living in a utilitarian society, none of the self-sacrificial risks.

Eldar are a close second, but the fact that they are all, literally, psychopaths kind of makes that a risky thing.

In one of the Salamander books the top Wych in the employ of an Archon is killed, and he spends the rest of the series confused and upset about how much he misses her. Not only does he find the company of other Wyches unsatisfying now, he allies with a Chaos Space Marine warband for no other reason then that they hated the Salamanders too. In fact, her death affected him so much that he wasn't able to see his baby brother's latest attempt on his life coming, and so was killed for realsies before he could take his revenge.

There's also a short story in Xenology where another Archon ends up falling in love with a lovely but hard to impress young dark eldar called Mistress Baeda, but because Dark Eldar culture is so twisted he doesn't even know what he's feeling until the spouse of a guardsman his soldiers killed hears of his motivations end immediately goes from fearing him to pitying him. He explains the closest term they have to love and that just makes her laugh even harder. For a moment, all the arrogance of the Dark Eldar is gone, and he's baffled when she asks him to reunite her with her husband because her love for him was such that life wasn't worth living anymore without him; and this just confuses the hell out of the Archon.

The Archon tries countless ways to impress her; he raids entire planets for her, offers her the finest food and drink, goes to the Haemonculus to make himself look as young and handsome as possible, but she keeps on blowing him off even as he runs his kabal into the ground to win her heart, with all his actions being supported by his only daughter (who is also his right hand woman) who he trusts and relies on. Finally; he tries to steal a crystal that's the centerpiece of a Necron Lord's throne room in a heavily defended tomb world. He gets the Krystal, but his Kabal is gutted and his daughter was killed.

Then all the pain of a father who just lost their child hits him and he completely breaks down, and only then does Baeda accept him, because the pain of a broken heart is something rare and delicious.

Some people say the real love story was him realizing how much he cared for his daughter when the Necrons took her away from him. Now he knows the same pain that woman did.

It's one of the most feels intensive stories in 40k.

I think the Moral of that story, is don't **** with the Necrons.

That is a cool piece of fluff though!
