Great to see you back! A tease, as always, but love the varying metal effects you have going on that base - the rust stippling and damaged CoD piece in particular stand out. Hope you're here to stick around!

welcome back mate... i recently saw you on another thread posting... but befre this i thought you wouldn´t come back...diablo being the cause for another victim
was it worth? what made you be spat out?
as for the base... quite good looking... specially like the bent brassen skull icon!
Rest assured, the perfectly normal occasional short-term abstinence aside, I'm not going anywhere.
There are plenty projects I'd like to finish/make happen, so considering my recent workpace, I can't even afford to go to the toilet if I want to get some done before retirement.
Anyway I even got a game of necromunda scheduled for friday morning and I'm thinking about deploying Cortaro as an NPC, should be fun and who know's maybe it will get me into a daring mood and I paint him soon.
On Diablo:
It's a fine game and with some future adjustments it might get more motivating on the long run, but currently there isn't much left to do for me. I hit 60 with all five classes, made it to 60 on hardcore on my first attempt, got me a more than decent equip on my main and decent ones for all the others, beat the game on inferno pre- and post-patch as melee and ranged class etc.. So there really is only one thing left: mindless grinding aka. wasting precious lifetime on something even more pointless, than the usual crap I spent my time with. So after getting my lvl60 hardcore monk killed at the exact spot I knew she would die, even before creating the char (doom in wortham; dark berserker grp with vortex, firechains, arcane enchanted and shielding; suckysuckyslamslamslam and I was history in less than a second), I finally thought it's enough and high time for something productive to spent my free time on.

LOL... but i fully second that feeling...

and this is what i´ve felt with WOW back then too and sadly i felt that with diablo 2 ...which bothered me no end as i loved the first diablo game to pieces... that game i literally played in abundance...
Hallo Bai, toll dich wieder hier zu sehn Mann! Oh wait, wrong language lol anyway, I'm already waiting to see the awesome stuff you've built (gonna build...). The base looks very nice!
I was just thinking that I haven't seen anything from you in a while, then lo and behold, and update! The base is ace, fantastic weathering all around.

Last night I played around with the crackle effect I'm planning to create on the banner, but I'm not sold yet. It will take some more testing.
In other news, I finally ordered a light-box! It's been sitting in my shopping cart forever, but I just found out that a different product is on sale and even comes with some (probably not so good) lamps. You can fold it and store it in a bag, so it doesn't take up half a room to store and as an addition to my other photography equipment it will certainly manage to improve the quality of my pics in the future.
Just in case you're looking for one too, make sure to grab it while stocks last:
I'll report on any findings once it arrives (towards the end of the week).

Whenever did I write that, Dave?
About color selection:
It's bloody hard for me! There is no secret recipe to how I do it.
All I can say is that I've always been very sensitive to colors, so I tend to think a lot about what colors I use. (I remember that in elementary school they made us color different animals and after a while I had a whole zoo's worth of all black animals with red eyes. Bears, rhinos, dogs...)
The results of my usual overthinking may vary a lot, but recently I've been trying to stop painting in the clean and flashy eavy-metal style (red here, green there, some black, a little gold on top) and instead I strive to use a more uniform/reduced palette, but with little success so far.
I would love to use a really reduced and moody palette, but I don't know how to do it (yet) or simply don't dare to do it (yet). I love these for example, but I wouldn't have the balls to run such a reduced palette:
Spoiler:
What I currently often end up doing is finding a filter that I try to use on most parts of the miniature. That could be something as simple a applying the same wash to most areas (in addition to any others of course), or something more subtle like using the same shade of a color for all the highlights or shadows of a miniature, regardless what color the respective area is. That means I'll put dark blue shadows on a yellow area just like on a red or brown one, the results can be surprisingly good when done right.
Nevertheless the most important thing about color selection is imo the reasoning behind a color. My troopers for example are dominated by brown, black and metal, with some vibrant red or dark green for a change. The ultimate goal of which is to subtly emphasize on the medieval background and down-to-earth vibe.

And awesome limited-palette for that Cawdor gang... holy hell, they look awesome! I've always wanted to try that myself, but I just don't know where to start...
We've been looking forward to more of your work, so again, welcome back!

Cool...I just wing it myself most of the time, often stealing basic color schemes from elsewhere, but personalizing the variations and weathering, making them my own. Truly original color schemes are difficult for me though.

Welcome back Bai, now get in your hamsterwheel and get on with the painting.
Or it's servitor ''agumentation'' and a one-way ticket to the beryllium mines for you!
I have a little hobby-thread going in the P&M section. Some say it's the best blog on Dakka, some don't agree, most belive it would be better if I finished at least one project some time this century and not just kept starting new ones.
Check it out, you just might like it.
By the way guys, if you're still wondering what's going on top of that base and think I'm just mean teasing again: I'm in fact not.
I've posted the whole miniature a while ago. I actually made it shortly after the vostroyans hit the shelves, so yeeears ago. Simply swapped the weapon for something more manly/40kish and built a base, which I thought good at the time. It'll fit in decently in a necromunda surrounding, so I decided to keep it as is out of nostalgia.
The paintjob is giving me some trouble because I'm trying to put some ambitious ideas for the banner into practice, with scant success I have to admit.

True, Brute! But first of all the purpose of a banner is visibility (never got the whole banner thing, but it's a lovely miniature) and secondly his survivability will be vastly increased by the mob of veteran troopers and imperial agents that will accompany him. Shooting at the banner bearer won't be a priority for any gang fighter, not with all those crazy killers around him.
Update:
I'm having a lot of fun painting Gotthold's skin (yep, he got a name now, it's germanic for "he who has the boon of the gods"). Finally a project that motivates me to use some more advanced painting techniques and work on my blendings.

Hehe, wouldn't say so in this case. I was just too lazy to write banner bearer over and over... well he needed a name anyway, but the bonding happened while applying the basecoats, when I realized what a freaky miniature it is.
The paintjobs/pictures I've seen of the model really fail to do it justice and to show very high amount of details the model has (not saying mine will do better).
Gotthold gave me a hard time to figure out what's what. I mean there are always some tiny details that only show while painting, like the sword-pendant on his chest, or the dagger in his left boot, but this model has some exceptional stuff going on.
For example I always thought he wore an ordinary jacket, but only put one sleeve over his arms (for reasons of coolness obviously). In fact he wears a one armed jacket, held together by two cords. Just like these:
Spoiler:
What I also never realized before painting the mini, is that there are tons of extra-long purity seals hanging from the banner and entangling his hands and wrists (very inconvenient both for painting and fighting).

now that you mention it i see that freaky jacket on him...
that is why i think black priming isnt often that good.. sometimes i too accidently discover details while painting and not before beginning painting... thus you sometimes get stuck with simple paintschemes... i try to avoid color blocks... but sometimes i have a brown leathery thing next to the other because of this which is really vexing...
When it comes to different colors of primer, they all have their use. I used to prime black only, but have come to see it's really not a matter of confession like many people believe.
Nowadays it really depends on what I want to achieve. Black. White. Grey. Black with a zenital white "light". I choose as the project demands.
In this case black was the right choice (even though I made it years ago when I actually primed him), because I'm going for a darker, flat look and mean to actually build up all the colors from midground up and then shade where necessary.

Update:
Like I said before, me and my buddy Dennis had a game of necromunda planned for today. Due to the fact that we had very little chance to play recently, I wanted to avoid playing for hours and hours, looking up all the rules we forgot and shooting our boys to bits on our first game after a long hiatus.
So I decided a special scenario would suit us better than one straight from the rulebook. What we did was playing a modified hit and run scenario with Cortaro, the ogryn slave with the buzz saw, as our mission goal.
We set up on opposite sides of a 48"x24" board, with the ogryns point of entry in the middle. After one round of getting in position and a half-hearted little firefight between the gangs, the ogryn appeared (on a 4+) and because our gangs were both at a similar distance we made a D2 roll who he'd be going against.
Within one round the ogryn was down and the rest of the game was two rounds of shooting at the downed ogryn to get it out of action.
In retrospective the ogryn wasn't tough enough or we were too lucky. I thought toughness 6, 3 wounds and nerves of steel would give him a chance to wreak some havoc, but he was cut down in no time. Next time I'll give him true grit and some armor as well.
After the game:
One of my boys, Grando, suffered a severe chest wound and has reduced toughness now. One of Dennis' mercs got his arm messed up and lost some of his strength to it.
There were plenty advances (there was a juicy XP bonus for wounding the ogryn and the killshot payed extra), but most of them not too significant. I rolled up +1BS for 3 of my guys (ever fired a heavy stubber with BS6?), but I would have preferred some skills instead.
Most noteworthy and slightly ridiculous was the fact, that I rolled ( )x10+60 for my income and when I tested whether I'd get some fresh meat from the settlements I rolled , which means my gang consists of 14 models overall, two of which don't even exist yet.
Getting only one rare trade offer (which was a inferno power pack) was less amusing for me, but alas one shouldn't get too greedy.
Results:
We're resolved to squeeze in at least one game per month from now on and we'll make sure to finally build some terrain out of the hoards of material we collected. Beginning with me building the underlying framework for our board in the coming week. I'll post some pictures, when it's done.

I thought toughness 6, 3 wounds and nerves of steel would give him a chance to wreak some havoc
Certainly sounds like it would, probably depends on what special/heavy weapons the gangs have more than anything.
I rolled up +1BS for 3 of my guys (ever fired a heavy stubber with BS6?), but I would have preferred some skills instead.
I would probably take BS over nearly any skill on most gangers, and definitely on my heavy! A BS6 heavy is crazy, it's a real game changer, might be worth it to upgrade his gun although the humble heavy stubber is my favourite heavy weapon.
I rolled ( )x10+60 for my income
My last income I got ( x10)+35... So when do we get to see the new gang members?
