Floor and door (not a roller shutter as it happens):

Starting with the floor, I found a piece of card that was large enough and roughly cut it to shape (it gets cut to size later).
I then cut lengths of card to form the frame inside the building...

...As the roof is firmly glued on I need some way to access the inside and so the floor will be removable for modelling, painting, and I may leave it for future maintenance too. It's quite a tight fit for "regular" removal, but then it's up to the owner anyway...

...The lengths of card were then glued in using pencil marks from the building on the base card.
Once dry I checked the fit and sanded the frame to perfect the fit.

The building was then seated in place and the rear outer piece was glued in place and the building removed to avoid gluing that in place
Once dry the building was replaced and the front two short sections of card were glued on and the building removed

Once dry the side pieces can just be glued on without the building as they overlap the front and rear pieces that are firmly glued on already.

Finally, the building is placed in and then the excess base card is trimmed to fit the outer card surround.

Then I added the door; building it separately from strips of card and then gluing in place.
Then I cut the inner front card pieces that I forgot needed to be shorter to accommodate the door.

The door is short of the floor, but the inside is getting more card and will be thicker, and these kind of shutters never reach perfectly to the floor anyway.

I can now build the interior inside the floor piece and insert it to the building as one whole. No walls getting in my way.

Thanks Cleatus.

My gap at the bottom of the door is vindicated... kind of.
Floor added, gap is significantly smaller.

However, I've been distracted:

I just thought I'd build them to see the possibilities,
and then there were some (very small) gaps to fill,
and then I wanted to prime them to check I'd got all the (also small) mould lines,
and then I thought I may as well show you lot, and thought that I should give them my usual black layer first,

And now, these are on the desk and the workshop has been put to one side...

With that, a few notes of my opinions.
I'm very hot at the moment (my room is at a steady 30oC today).

but on the models, I'm pleasantly surprised;
There's lots of fine details and really sharp spikes. (I won't get into the design of the models here, I'll likely moan about things as I show them )
The fit of the parts are very good, you could almost (almost) get away without any filling of gaps where they meet.
Certainly a step up in model kit quality for GW.

Yeah, that's the feeling I'm getting for that too. Thoughts are circulating on what interior this requires... while I'm distracted by the Primaris.

Primaris can call the older marines "Little buddy"
In the same way a 6" human is not going to argue with a 7" super-soldier, a 7" super-soldier is not going to argue with a 9" super-duper-soldier...

I'm surprised that no one has got the "I know my place" joke yet...

Anyway, still hot.
But I have managed some painting of the Primaris.
This is just the base coat, and will be highlighted up to white for a "bone" finish.

And I'm thinking a brass colour for the trim.

While I could have painted these up in a chapter's colours, that just limits the number of people that'll be interested.
Therefore I'm aiming for a unique paint-job that can be used with any chapter/army as a "special" squad.

Slow going at the moment though as the weather is too hot for airbrushing (the paint would dry before reaching the mini's) or even wet-blending really. I'm having to stick to layering and many layers means slow. Even sitting still for more than an hour is uncomfortable. *Moan moan, blooming British weather, moan moan...*

And some other thoughts on the models:
Of the two squads of Primaris that come in this box, this first squad is made up of unique poses.
However, the way these are constructed there's not much you can do easily to modify them and not end up looking like one of the others:
"I could raise this one's gun... but then I'd look like this one"
"I could move his leg like, so... but then I'd look like this other one"
and so on.
That's why I've left these as is.

The other squad though, is made of the sergeant and 2 pairs of identical marines.
These will definitely be modified, however difficult It'll be.

And that brings me to thoughts on ease of re-posing.
Specifically the hips.
If you look at the upper legs you have 3 layers of armour: one that surrounds the leg (as you get on normal marines), then there's a thicker patch of armour (also on the leg), then there's a plate of armour that hangs from the waist over the leg... this last one will cause people problems.

f you want to change the angle of the leg, this plate has to be "left" in place. It hangs from the waist and so shouldn't change angle as the leg moves. Unless they do these separate in the multi-pose kits, you can't chop the leg off at the hip easily; you're either going to have to cut around this plate and re-build the leg, or chop off the plate and re-build that (which would be the easier option).

We will have to see when I come to the second squad, what it's like with these single-pose models. Going to be more work than expected.
The upper bodies should be as easy as normal marines though.

Yorkright, I'll be sure to show how I go about chopping all these models up. I don't know about the other squad, but two of this squad don't have the waist-mounted armour plates, so they could be removed and not replaced, but you would need to shave down the remains on the chopped leg. Will have to see when I come to it, there's always a way.

Thank you Graven'. Good to see someone knows what it was about. I do plan on doing a unique symbol on these, don't know yet if I could get away with 4 candles... maybe some O's...

Anyway, progress:
Actual blending this time, up to the "cream" layer.
Still to do a couple more layers ending with almost white (to allow for edge highlights of white).

Once that's done I may be able to decide on a helmet colour (hence still being black with paint splodges on). Sergeant will be red, but the rest... will see when the armour colour is done.

And if you are reading this, why not pop over the the latest LoER terrain contest voting thread and cast your vote for your favourite piece of terrain:

And now after tidying up the crevices (scraping out excess paint and pin-washes) and edge highlights, this is stage one (mostly) done:

I'm still thinking brass for the trim and fancy bits.
And I'm thinking a bright silver/chrome for the helmets.
Classic red guns (they have to get some colour somewhere).
And some other spot colour to contrast with it all at the end...

Onwards.

The LoER voting is very close at the moment, so if you haven't popped in to vote please do.

I did consider making the helmets black, but they are going to be tricky to paint with the work required for black. Had I kept them separate it would have been easier.

Tip for those who haven't built them yet: Keep the heads separate until you've painted them.

Also, the black helmets remind me of one of the Eldar guardians I have in my army that is basically the same scheme with a black helmet. I seem to be drawn to this cream/bone/brown colour.

Blue eyes are a possibility.

Thanks Dave. Go MahReeens!

Thanks youwashock. Good to hear, I do that a lot.

Thanks Cam'. I'm sure there'll be many people new to this game struggling with painting these. The type of models that come in these box sets are easy to build, but very difficult to paint for someone not used to model painting, or those too eager to get the models build and have glued them together before painting (or even thinking of painting, not mentioning any names ).

It was the same with Dark Vengeance, such as the Chapter master holding his sword up close to his head.
These guys hold their guns right up close to their chests; you cannot see daylight between them. Also, the way the heads sit down inside the armour and the closeness of this to the front of the backpack make all these bits tricky to paint in-situ.

There's probably many people swearing at these as they try to paint them neatly. I've done it to myself enough times to not be worried about it and I know ways of getting around such issues. But they could be easier to paint for beginners (and the rest of us), and the instructions could at least mention "paint before assembly" somewhere as an option.

I would advise anyone (even those used to painting "normal" space marines) to leave the heads and backpacks off to paint.

Anyway...

Ooo, I like how these look with the brass bits.
And I've tidied up various bits ready for the steel and silver.

Until next time...

Thanks Kavika'. And so you shall see...

The chrome-domes didn't look right. The bright silver just didn't fit the scheme.
So I've gone for a dark grey, but I kept the face-plates silver just to remember my original thought.

Black bits and grey-metal bits have been done and, of course, the red bits (except purity seals as that uses a different paint).

Not fully decided on eye colour, may be blue to show the inner Ultramarine showing through... Would contrast with the red nicely too.

I'm going to work on the bases next so that I can mount them and stop them getting in each other's way for the fiddly bits and I can stop rubbing the paint off their toes...

I was wondering where you were going with the bolters, red is a great choice. Liking the red helm, will the rest be the same or is he the squad leader?

Thanks Yorkright. Yeah, the red works. Just the one red helmet, he's the Sergeant as per the "official" markings from the rules (for those sticking to what big Rob' says).

I decided to go for flagstones on the bases and tried out a different way of making them (as opposed to sculpting them from putty, like I did for Frodo and Co.).

Just primed there, painting will bring out the detail better.

And just for consistency of photo updates, the squad on their bases.

I decided to not crack the flag's on the Sergeant's base to show his greater purity / strength / better-ness...

I'll let the glue dry fully before continuing with painting.

Awesome work on those flagstones, not sure I like the idea of using powdered dried paint as the mortar but hey if it works (looks convincing to me) and it's what you've got to hand then who am I to judge.

top notch shading on the marines to boot, marine armour is deceptively difficult to paint imo.

OneManNoodles wrote:Awesome work on those flagstones, not sure I like the idea of using powdered dried paint as the mortar but hey if it works (looks convincing to me) and it's what you've got to hand then who am I to judge.
Thanks OMN. I use crushed dried paint for the mud'n'rocks mixture on most of my personal models: Whenever the remnants of paint in one of my paint pots dries up beyond use, I'll scrape it out and let it fully cure before crushing it up (bare in mind I use enamel paints YMMV with your own paints).
The mixture will also likely include plastic and plaster scraps from my work board.
I just sprinkle it onto PVA on the base, pick, move and remove individual bits to my liking and let the glue dry.
Give it a layer of water/PVA to seal and fully attach.
Then paint as usual.

You could just use any fine powder for the mortar to the same effect, this is just what I've used.

top notch shading on the marines to boot, marine armour is deceptively difficult to paint imo.
Thanks. Subtle as usual for my painting, but I like it to be an aid to natural shadows, rather than heavy contrast.

Ta. Yeah, similar ideas to what I'm thinking.

And the Primaris:
Further details painted (still some to do), the bases finished, and the transfers on the shoulders...

...I first decided to add a circle (sourced from Crimson fist icons with some careful scalpel use) and then paint a logo/icon in the centre. But then I saw the circle by itself and had a thought.
These are intended to be not attached/affiliated with any particular chapter. Mainly to allow these to be saleable to the widest audience.
I think that the empty circle represents this nicely.
Also, the buyer could add their own chapter transfer if they wanted them to "belong" to their chapter, but the circle can still remain to give the special, from outside, appearance.

With a red circle chosen, and a white "tactical" arrow unlikely to show up well on the cream/bone armour, I chose the red double arrow to show the squad's battlefield role and to match the guns. I've also left off the squad number so that the buyer can add their preferred transfer here.

Blue eyes / lenses to show the big Rob link of Ultramarine.

I took photos of all angles of each of them so that I can check them over for things to fix, so here's a different angle of each one to give you an all round view (as you've only seen the front so far):

Now to do the final little details and the touch-ups, then final photos.
