KK I see what you mean, Fin. I think it'll probably look great as soon as your highlights are a bit brighter?
I still love the whole thing tho, don't forget!

Stunning work, finnan. The models are fantastic, but I really love the shading on the oranges and yellows.

I wonder if you'd mind revealing how you achieve those colors. (Or have you already; just point me in the right direction if you have.) It looks like you base coat white and then use washes to build up the colors....

Thanks!

Thanks Casey, Dr H, Urien, Yellowbeard

that's as bright as they're going Urien : )

Yellowbeard: start off with a Blazing Orange basecoat, and then highlight up to Golden Yellow, then another highlight of Sunburst Yellow, and then a 1:1 mix of Sunburst and Dorn Yellow, and then a pure Dorn highlight.
Always water the paints down a fair bit, and then lots and lots and lots and lots of thin layers to build up the colour : )

Finnan,

I have to say that I really enjoy looking at your work. And have even drawn some inspiration from some of your work, or even just blatantly steal some ideas.

Spoiler:

I hope that I don't over-step with a little criticism:

While I liked your first DE Wych, I think the second one had a little too much color to it, there wasn't enough black or metallic to balance the orange jumping off of the figure.

hey : ) - stealing ideas is always allowable : )

I know what you mean about the brightness level - I did intend for this one to be very yellow so that there's a high level of contrast between him and his base. The other option would have been to reverse the colour scheme, but I think then he'd have been too dark.
In my head (always a dark, scary and perilous place to be), I figure that DEldar, or Corsairs, are even more individualistic than CEldar, so they're each going to look different to show that... I also thought that if they were Arena Wyches, a bright costume would be a good thing because they could show off how good they are by keeping it pristine. Same for a battle situation, except they're a little more heavily armoured.

I think the next one will be darker (I think...), and possibly more wasp-like... maybe lol

Armour highlighted and a start made on all the fiddly bits of detail. Having had a look at it, I want to tidy up the purple tubing on his ribs. Green just based and washed at the moment.
(having had another good look, I also need to go back in and be a bit more accurate with the green tubing on his thigh)

I was thinking this afternoon about the weapons, well, the flail actually. Options: gold, same as the other one. Copper, so the red with contrast against the green of the agoniser. Or, as was suggested, go for a blue steel which will contrast against the yellow of the suit.
I thought I'd decided on the gold, but on second thoughts, I think I might go with the blue steel - so I can do the handle of the whip the same, and tie it into the gear on his back, have it contrasting against the yellow and be different to the first Wych.
Does that sound like a good plan - or do I want to have the flails the same so that the squad looks a little cohesive? Thoughts?

I would lean towards different weapon colours, but that may just be me (my blog or gallery would explain that clearly ).

However you may want to consider how the weapons tie in with the different base colours, so a blue steel colour on this one would work (I think) with the purple base I believe you were going to use with this one, in the same way that the gold (maybe a reddish bronze would have been better) and the green did on the previous one. Maybe... worth a thought.

that did pass through my mind too Dr H. My only concern would be that they'd end up not looking cohesive, but I think the yellow and metallic will do that enough... possibly...

Yeah, it's a tricky decision.

There's always room for individuality within armies and squads and the yellow and armour, as you say, should be enough to keep them as a squad.

However there's always/usually two ways of painting an army; they are all identical (brothers, sisters, hatchlings, clones ...) or they are all very much individuals (Orks spring to mind) there's usually something to hold them all together, but two models may look drastically different (a host of them and it becomes an army).

Also, if you start with these two with different weapons, what are you going to do for the others? Will they all have different coloured weapons/metals or will you stick to one or two variants?

I think I'd stick to a couple of variants. These are the only two with flails, then I've got two agonisers, and the rest are swords and daggers... plus one pistol. For the swords, I was going to try doing crystal blades, but dark crystal as opposed the bright CEldar-like ones... so I could stick to a few colours there...

I'd be very wary of putting down too many colours, both in terms of the single miniature and the squad. If you are going for a GD win then check out the trends of the winners. It might not seem the fairest thing but the judges will tend towards certain things because they are human. They might prefer cohesion or maybe the like each model to be a seperate piece.

I'm sure you'll make a good call.

hmm... everyone's making good sense : )
I think I'm leaning back towards the gold... for the sake of simplicity and cohesion. I'll take a shot tomorrow when I've done a bit more on it, but his loincloth is going to be dark red, so maybe I should just keep to the harmonious colour scheme and stick to the gold.
This certainly makes a change to my usual go-with-the-flow-and-make-it-up-as-I-go-along method of painting
Thanks for the suggestions guys : )

Why do I get a Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers song in my head when I see them?

Hey Fin! I like the gold mate, I think it works with the figures nicely, and the green agoniser is perfect imo! my only critisism is the black armour probably need to come up in highlighting just a bit more (if you haven't finished it yet?)

Can't go wrong with some Power Ranger action!

the armour's highlighted up to Mithril... but I can go in and do some more. The shots have flattened it out a little... they're awkward buggers to shoot because of the whips and flail - the Macro wants to focus on them rather than the body.

Looks good.
I like the green whip (so that's an agoniser).
and I like the colourful wossnames on his belt, add just enough colour to the model.
Gold flail works well. A blue steel one may have left it looking a bit cold really. Gold = Good.

I was wondering about putting a couple of stripes on it in a contrasting colour, but wondered if that might be too ordered and Craftworldy...?

Love it. It's much more cohesive than I anticipated too. The other colours are very subtle accompaniments to the orange.

I really like the variation in brightness as well. Give the effect that there is more light on one.

I like the green whip. It balances out the color on the body a lot better, while not having to revert to a lot of black armor as I suggested before.

The only thing I'm not sure about is in the pictures it doesn't look like the yellow highlighting is showing through. It's showing up more as peach.

@Insacrum - I changed the setting on my camera so I could get a decent shot, which might explain the colour shift... looking at the shots, I see what you mean, but he's definitely yellow : )
