What’s important in the modern day is I get the choice of lid, or no lid.
Because painting faces sucks.

Some people just don't want to paint faces/eyes.

I do understand that and I do think having the choice is the best thing overall. But you still do see the argument that if the model isn't wearing the helmet it's somehow immersion breaking / undercuts the fantasy of an armoured warrior (even in this thread here) and that's the bit I don't get because it's just a bit of artistic licence for those that do like faces. Not wanting to paint faces is obviously fine. I mean this quote here:
If part of the pitch is that your guy is this heavily armored killing machine, it undermines the effect when he is begging to get shot in the face.
That's exactly what I'm talking about, the model not wearing a helmet in no way means that character canonically isn't wearing one any more than the model standing means they aren't using cover if someone's firing a heavy weapon at them, etc. The poses aren't meant to be taken that literally.
Ultimately though it doesn't serve much good for me to bang on about this so I'll leave it

Before I wrangle this thread back to the original topic, I want to add my gripe!
I hate it when one model has a really cool helmet (Custodes Blade Champion) and no one else in the entire army has a helmet like that available to them...

I was wondering how "new player friendly" is the new box?
I know there's no dice/ruler in the box, but is it easy for a new player to figure out?

I try to use helmets on all my models. In my main army, there is only one unhelmeted marine, and thats only because the model is a throwback reference to the old metal Terminator Captain, crew cut, respirator, skull crotch and all.
I also love DKoK and Imperial Navy because they all have helmets. I just love the faceless aspect of helmeted troops, makes them more "disposable" / anonymous, cannon fodder...

You get the datasheets for the units on cards so if you borrow mum's tape measure and the dice out of all your household board games, and download the faction packs from warhammer community for detachments/strategems/enhancements etc, you have basically everything you need for a small game except for any scenery. Most unusual omission in my opinion is the terrain footprint templates, but again, you can download those from warhammer community and print them out if you have access to a printer, stick them to card etc.
So as far as the christmas morning test goes this box flunks it hard, but to give GW due credit, you don't necessarily need to buy anything else to play, just downloads and etc.

The launch box isn't really targeted at new players; it's more of a bulk-buy minis set aimed at established collectors.
There will inevitably be some longer term starter set product that includes things like dice, terrain layouts, etc.

Yeah, which makes more sense when both halves of the box have something very significant for collectors (complete redesigns as with dark imperium, new units like in Indomitus, etc). This one is a good launch box for Ork players and more of a starter box vibe for the marines.

Well, since they dont include a "How to Muster a force" section in the so called "Cire Rules" book....
(You need to access the app for that important detail)
I'd rate it as a FAIL.

The Legiones Astartes Combat Force is a fine box. You could easily buy two, maybe even three of it.

Not sure I've seen it mentioned anywhere, but there is an actual, not included in the instructions build option for the land speeder- the lower pylon has both a version with tactical rock, for easy build, and a standard version, to allow for a flying stand, for which there is a half sphere depression in the undercarriage.

Seen that mentioned in some reviews. It's welcome, GW does that from time to time. The Burning Chariot kit has some incredible flexibility, including optional separate flight stand holes for both the disc (to make a Fluxmaster) and the screamers (to add them to a Screamer unit - they even come with tail adapters to make them compatible with spare tails from the standalone Screamer box).

It does make me think this will be a standalone release with the codex, it has optional heads, and speeders have never been particularly poseable anyway. It was a pleasant surprise, even if the flight stands are always pretty poorly conceived for larger models.

The Legiones Astartes Combat Force is a fine box. You could easily buy two, maybe even three of it.
Tyranid one would also work well in groups. Get three and you could build a ground and winged Hive Tyrant and the Swarmlord
Cadian one maybe two just because its got a command squad in there and I honestly don't know how many of those you'd want/need to field before is wasteful.

These 40k battleforces are so big I don't think you'd want to buy multiples anyway. I did buy the big Tyranid christmas battleforce they did after Leviathan twice because it was basically tailor made for my tastes, but otherwise it's still quite a lot of stuff with just one box.

Those turned into Start Collectings, then Combat Patrols. These are like the old Megaforces or Christmas boxes.

Maybe with a small sprue of weapon options and accessories?
