Plastic Farseer I might get hold of, but it's not anything terribly new or exciting. I really want the new releases to be exciting and to update the line - I'm really crossing my fingers for new Swooping Hawks in a similar style to the Scourges or Shadow Spectres, and Banshees with as much movement as the Wyches. The flyer rumours looks... interesting to say the least, but it still has potential. SuperMegaWraithZord rumours... well, we'll wait and see. I do like me some Eldar walkers, so I'm hoping for something tall, and slender and elegant...

As we all know, I'm a weak, weak man with willpower issues.
... I may have bought a phoenix or two today... I know, I know, I shall be castigating myself later ; )
I'm working up the ice phoenix first - Icefyre. I've already started to hack into it - I've chopped off the tail feathers and swapped them so that they flare out rather than in - I just think it'll give it a nicer line. There's a little greenstuffing to do on the joins, but should be pretty doable.
I'm tempted to flip the wings too, so they're sweeping down, but, I'll see about that... pics to come later

I'll do my best Giraffe!
Still doing some 'stuffing on the tail, but it's coming on pretty well. I'm thinking of how to pose/base the beastie. I'd quite like to have him at a fairly sharp angle, one wingtip touching the ground so I can do a trail of frost along the ground (and do the same for the fire one as well, using the spare tail or wings as a trail of fire). The only major problem to that will be whether the join will be strong enough. If I can, I'll try for multiple pin joints through the wing tips and through a piece of resin scenery... and then lots of glue on the back!

Sounds like a really good idea. Would make an excellent diorama of two flying past a central object/ poor Orc or something with their wing tips touching the ground like you said.

Colour me intrigued Fin! that idea is solid and one I may attempt to steal in the future! the challenges of the ice crystals and pose appeal to me greatly! and I also think if anyone can do it, it's you :-) I hark back to the last icy model you did (that eskimo looking she creature?)

thanks Nerd : )
I just have to figure how to get the wing to stick to the base and have it strong enough. It's actually a fairly light model, but it's still going to be a far amount of stress on a small area. I might have to pin a couple of the feathers so it'll be strong enough.
The plan is white and gold (white gold - thank you Vallejo Liquid Gold!) for the ice phoenix, and black, red and gold (I think) for the fire one.

Progress on the ice phoenix. He's pretty much assembled - the tail still isn't glued in place because I want to be able to get to the feet (and I still need to sort out the join where I swapped the tails too). Base on its way too. I've drilled into the rock and pinned it - it's not super strong, so I might have to do another pin somewhere. For once I don't think glue is going to cut it. It's also top-heavy and tips over, so my thinking is this: whip up a plinth at work for the base to sit on, and inset some magnets (just ordered), with the corresponding magnets glued to the underside of the base. Apparently these magnets have a pull of 2.25kg, so I think that should be strong enough to pull it down... that's the plan anyway!
Another option could be to rotate the rock and have the base parallel to the wings, but I;m not sure even that would counterbalance it.

Second pin drilled and stuck in, so hopefully that'll strengthen it. I'm taking the base in to work tomorrow so I can start working on the plinth

Despite it being my busy day at work today, I managed to make a start on the plinth - found a nice chunk of wood (chunk = technical term), and I trimmed it down, and then routed out the top. I then found out that I'd actually picked out some Maple, which turns out to be about as hard as steel, so I'm going to have a time of it getting it sanded down... but that's not a huge problem, I'd much rather take my time anyway. I still have to wait for the magnets to arrive though, so I'm in no huge rush. I'll bring it home tomorrow so I can take a shot of it : ) Also interested to see the Eldar rumours at the moment about big wraith constructs with digitigrade legs (like the back legs of a horse)... Boy am I glad I did the WraithWalker! Maybe I could sue GW for stealing my intellectual property? (joking, joking)

I'm already trying to pace myself Nerd (we all know it'll be a total fail... unless they're ugly... )
I have some ideas for vehicles if they're cool... it rips an idea off from Age of X, an X-Men story arc... Otherwise it'll be the usual red and yellow for the troops. I'll just have to wait and see what comes out - I'm crossing my fingers for Swooping Hawks...

So, here's the plinth, with and without the base on top. It probably needs a bit more sanding, but it pretty nice already. The magnets arrived today as well (and boy, are they S T R O N G, so they'll definitely do the trick), so I can take them into work tomorrow and get the holes drilled in and can set the magnets. Famous last words, but I'm a little surprised that it's come together this quickly. At the moment, I'm leaning towards just keeping it the plain wood and getting it waxed and polished. I think it'd be a shame to paint over the beautiful grain.

Plinth looks nice. I'd leave it wood. Are you sure these magnets are not too strong, you don't want to try an pick up the model and leave the base behind by accident... or end up with your car keys being embedded in the model... Looking forward to a pretty paint job.

you make a valid point about the strength of the magnets... I was originally thinking about having two magnet points, but one might actually be enough... they have a pull of 2.25kg...

I like the plinth, I would keep it wood, but depending in the final look of the model, you might want to stain it.

Just some company online for the magnets... they're neodymium magnets if that makes any difference? I got 12mm diameter ones as I thought I'd need the strength, but I could probably have gotten away with smaller ones, but these will certainly do the trick!
I think I'll leave it au natural, but I'll finish it up with some wax and give it a good buffing.

Neodymium is what you want, 12mm is huge but it'll certainly secure the model. As long as you've pinned well and you slide the magnets apart rather than pull I don't think you'll have any issues with leaving the base behind.

Holes drilled and magnets glued into the wooden base and onto the plastic base. I don't think it's going to be going anywhere! lol You're right about sliding the plastic base off Casey, although it's not as difficult as I feared it might be. I used epoxy resin to stick them in place, so it should be pretty secure. now that's done, I can finish off the plinth and get it looking pretty, and then stick the phoenix to the plastic base and get undercoating!

presenting, from the White Hot Room, the White Phoenix of the Crown : ) lol
Couldn't resist a little X-Men reference there
So, a little bit of progress on the first phoenix. The plan is to have some contrast between the warmth of the gold and the coldness of the white and snow, although I was thinking this morning about having two whites - a warm/neutral white for the wings and body, and then a cold white for where the frost starts to kick in. The snowflakes will definitely be cold white.
All I've done is base with Vallejo Liquid Gold Rich Gold, and give most areas a couple of washes of Gryphs Sepia, and then highlighted back up to the Rich Gold. For the gold I didn't wash, I want the Rich Gold to be the shadow-colour, and then highlight up to the White Gold I have.
The feet were given the same basecoat, and then have a single wash of Badab Black at the moment, but I want to put at least another one, if not more on top, and then some judicious drybrushing with gold.
also included is a shot of the base (still need to wax it) - it works! Hurrah! I also still need to finish greenstuffing where the wings are pinned to the base.
