Cutting out the hull was the hard part, another step backwards but it had to be done. A 2 mm bulkhead to strengthen the casement and
to provide a secure mount for the hinge assembly. the cutting out the hinge recesses which gives me this result and no significant damage. Nice to see you back Jabba, how's that Reaver progressing? I'm looking forward to an assembly thread.

Below is a composite image of the left side hinge showing the range of motion and the assembled components. Now all I have to do is reproduce it for the right side. I'll take pictures of the components seperately for the right side hinge; I didn't for the left because I wasn't sure the damned thing would work.

Well it seems to move and offer the range of motion I require. The durability is in question as with anything made of plastic but as a purely demo piece I'd say it's good for a go. More to come when I actually attach a door to it. Fingers crossed, Blackadder

You know, I was watching this awesomeness thinking I really need to get things in order to start copying what you're building. But that might be a bit too ambitious for me at this stage (new job, moving & school are always on my list), I probably should just focus on something easy like the Reaver. Next trip home I'm picking up my modeling supplies and starting assembly. Will keep you posted. Your need for specific data (measurements and angles) is something I will factor into the project, hopefully make it easier for the scratchers to build it as accurately as possible. I'm curious to see how you finish those air brakes, specifically that hole that allows for the movement.

Are you requesting measurements? All the measurements I have are gleaned from the 3D images. Scaling them up on my photo editor. Actually I thought the aft end of the hull was a bit too long and I loped off a few CM.
I'm curious to see how you finish those air brakes, specifically that hole that allows for the movement.
Done see the images below.
I wouldn't have thought that such a seemingly simple moving device could have consumed so much time but at last it is done except for the door panels. I managed to sheath the lower hull and around the brake openings on both sides; not too far behind my expectations for the weekend in spite of having to work a bit.
Rather pleased at the symmetry and the very close match of the left side and right side structures:
The open position, a tad larger than the 3D image but it's a moving part.

How did the gluing of the flat parts of the hinge to the tubing go? I tried to mock one of these up to see how it worked maybe for other applications. I ended up gluing the whole thing into position. 'Course my accuracy with the glue has always been poor.

I used Ambroid Pro Weld and perhaps the trick is to keep the hinge moving until the glue is set. Just in case an errant drop of glue seizes your work. Red Corsair wrote:I don't like Thunderhawks but find myself hooked to this thread! AMAZING work mate! God I also think the T'hawk is a hideously ugly misconception of an aircraft and until I found the 3D version would not have bothered with such a travesty. The 3D version lent an certain appeal and an almost viable reality to the construct until then I thought the T'hawk too grotesque to replicate. Once it became a rational vehicle to me I couldn't help but attempt to make a model of that version. Although since the initial effort was in foam poster board it did set me back as far as construction. I would not recommend starting as I did. I further believe that the 'concept' T'hawk may have been a more realistic vehicle but production considerations abridged it into the very unsatisfying FW effort.

I've been neglecting my public with some personal issues and dressing some of the top hamper that doesn't make for interesting updates. But now there is some progress on the underbelly where I am designing the landing pad wells.

Oh it's pretty crude alright
The wing root mount plate and engine mount tab outboard with one piece temporarily tacked in place to demo the approximate position. I think it's too far forward but that is the beauty of modular construction for once they are assembled I can place them where ever they appear correct.

The landing gear wells are coming along quite nicely. I've had a thought to build each wing separate from the hull and mount them with screws for easy disassembly for transport. This will be quite a large model and damage will occur if in one piece.

Early in this thread I posted an outstanding 3D set of images that I found on Deviant Art. Those renderings are all I have to go by. Right now I am using the image that exposes the bottom of the hull and wings/engines but unfortunately they are in perspective which makes my measurements less precise. What I am doing is expanding the image on my photo editing program (Photo Impact ver.10)on the screen to the actual size of the model and taking what measurements I need and employing a fudge factor to allow for the perspective.
