The last few codexes have seen a return of certain characters to their former glory. Mephiston and Abaddon to name a couple. The whole uber powerful characters of 1st and 2nd edition are best left in the past. Back then is was more a game of a few super characters surrounded by harmless followers. If I wanted to play HeroHammer I would play D&D. I'd rather play a strategy wargame.

Well the only thing I mind about the super powerful characters is when they become common additions to a list, like Old one eye, and the Emperors Champion. They can add a lot of depth to a battle and campaign as well as give people a chance to show off some of the most amazing models that have ever been released by Games Workshop.

I voted. I'm not sure exactly what that means, but I encourage everyone else to vote in this poll as well. Oh, and I don't think GW should return to Herohammer, although it does look like they may be moving a bit more in that direction.

We're seeing special characters become more commonplace in both 40K and Fantasy. Usually because they are simply better than anything the common lord can become.
Now, its entirely appropriate that someone like Abaddon is more powerful than a "normal" Chaos lord, but if the regular Chaos lord had flexibility of options he'd still remain viable. By killing all Wargear options the only advantage of a regular character is that he costs less, since no matter how you tool him there exists a Special Character who can do it better.
Why bother taking a regular Farseer when you can take Eldrad?

One of the reasons I gave up WHFB in the early days (1st/2nd edition) was that characters and magic were too powerful.

My vote has been cast. I think it could be crucial to the success of the option that I went for (whatever it was). The other options (whatever they are) look like they'll be fairly popular.

Man, I can't decide which one to vote for. Can you guys help me out?
Ok joking aside, I really pine for options on my standard characters. They are what really help me define their role on the battlefield and in my army. Options are what make my character different from other people's characters. Options are important. The loss of them and the increased power of "special characters" just takes the flavor out of the game. Sure it?s cool to see Eldrad show up in big games to lead his Craft World to victory. It just sucks to see him on both sides of a battle that's only 1000 points. That sort of thing makes me want to cry.
Anyone remember the game "Chaos Gate". It looked like it was going to be one of the coolest video games ever about 40k. However the fact that the only character options you had were what powers your librarian got and weather you gave your only master crafted bolt pistol to your librarian or your tech marine really felt like a lame cop out. Had there been more real options for your characters, the game would have been truly great rather than only mediocre. Let?s not see real 40k go the same route.

Anyway, no I don't like it, I think special characters should be just that, special permission only characters, anymore than I want to see titans and Baneblades in every battle. Or, if they really want to go to the character driven game, bring back the DM's. Because Kharn the Betrayer is NEVER as a good servant of Khorne going to leave his defilers just sitting there behind a hill shelling the ever loving crap out of me.

I voted "NO" just for the record. Everyone fighting with Mephiston vs. Mephiston action tends to get redundent. Hero hammer should stay dead. If you want to fight with superheros all over the place just play Warmachine. Bringing Baneblades and such sounds ubber ridiculous especially on 6x4 tables. Lets see my Baneblade template covers half your side of the table who's under it. I thought superheavies and massive tanks was for a little game called epic. GW seems to be trying any new idea to generate some kind of sales gain but I am thinking armegeddon/apocolypse or whatever is a bad concept. Better to just release a version of epic or better yet support the original.

When adding a poll it asks for a poll question. I figured it gave a Yes or No option. Apparently it's more complex than that. I'm glad people laughed at the one poll option, but took the question seriously. I didn't want this to turn into a flame war. ~Logic

I vote that everyone gets to field a token squad of cheerleaders.
The options are fishnet stockings, no stockings, and leather dominatrix gimp suits.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money. |

If the gimp suits include ball gags, then it gets my vote. Seriously though, herohammer is pants and is an obvious attempt to sell more models. Eldrad was a decent character before, but now they upped the price of him, and his rules.... well....rule. Seems pretty obvious whats going on to me. On the whole, its a bad thing for the game and is very shortsighted of GW to do this. They dont care about the consumers, and they care even less about their product, and its stuff like this that makes it show. Why the hell do I have to field Belial if I want to play deathwing? Because herohammer is the way to go. Its stupid.

I don't know exactly what happened here, but when I went to vote there was a huge line and several large men keeping anyone from entering the polling place. We were kept outside in the hot sun without any food or water or bathroom breaks that didn't mean losing our place in line. We weren't told anything about when we would be allowed to vote. Furthermore, there were people going down the line and checking our Dakka id cards and getting our information and stuff. Then they would check something on a computer and in many instances tell the person that he/she wasn't registered to vote at this location. But it totally wasn't true. This happened to my NEXT DOOR NEIGHBORS! Finally, they opened the polls about 10 minutes before they were closed for the day. Only about 12 people actually got to vote, while the rest of us were told "sorry, just deal with it." Now, disenfranchisement is a dirty word, but I can't think of any other way to describe my ordeal.

i am all for it as i hated the fact you had to get permission to use special charactors. Ragnar bladckmane was my first ever mini when he was released and his rules just did not in 3rd or 4th live up to his fluff. Nor did mep or abbadons. Its now been corrected

I don't think abbadon is worth his points. Still. Even his new good version. As for this being herohammer. IT IS ALREADY HEROHAMMER. Independant characters are already far too powerful for their points costs. Always have been always will be. Its a facet of the game. That space marine chaplain with 5 attacks is always going to wreck your army once it touches you and your only response will always be to send your own maddeningly powerful close combat monster at it.
Unless you play tau.

yes hero hammer has returned in a small way as mentioned above-the removal of options and choice when building your own HQ has made the named characters almost mandatory if you want something efffective in your HQ slot. it should be noted that GW no longer lists any "special" characters in thier dex's. there are named characters and "create your own" un-named characters. thus pushing the streamlined non-permission nature of the new independant and formerly special characters.

"Herohammer" can't really return unless they eliminate the 2" kill zone restriction for characters and/or change the way CC works for ICs, which I can't see them doing during this edition so...
Maybe it is a sign of things to come for 5th edition?

The Eldrad situation pisses me off quite badly. If I buy a Farseer with some more powers than the usual three, I'm better off with Eldrad. But I would feel dirty fielding him every game.
I like special characters but if they become mandatory, it gets silly.
Ordinary characters aren't that bad at the moment, though. Often just takes some rounds of close combat to finish one. I hated if characters became total losers.

I greatly dislike this trend that 40K is heading for. I liked it when the HQs were strong, but couldn't win the battle for you. These new Special Characters almost demand that you bring your own to deal with them. The normal grunts probably won't be able to handle them.
I am very intrigued about what sort of power Gazskull is going to show up with in the new Ork codex. Intrigued, yet afraid at the same time.

Sounds like he will be standarized...
I mean it's not that the special characters are unique anymore. Almost all of the Chaos named characters have force weapons an powerweapons are mandatory for all the others (or similar like the enhanced witchblades for eldar special characters). Why no commander Character who isn't a bomb all by himself?
