I've been thinking about it, and I can't imagine it to be an accident. Think they released it intentionally, and if so, why?

It was a conspiracy between Games Workshop and Yakface and HBMC to generate ad views for Dakka. I mean, that one thread got twenty thousand views. That must be like ten bucks!

But seriously, I think they leaked it on the assumption that even bad press is still press.

Unfortunately Beef's theory is probably correct.  Leaking info. on a water-downed codex is only likely to decrease sales, not increase them.  Also, a clandestine plan to leak information by GW, is giving GW too much credit.

I agree, leaking that was the thing NOT to do if they wanted to sell copies of it. However, it may have provided them a chance to go back and change stuff? Or at least give them ample opportunity to piss everyone off.

Can you D.I.G. it?

It's to late to change it now - although it does give GW a headstart in producing an FAQ........ err maybe

Leaking it after it is too late to really change anything is just stupid (maybe they did do it on purpose) so I would have to assume that it was just a leak rather than a plot. Now if it had come out before the thing went to print and they could still change things, that would have been intellegent.

An "open beta" would be a very intelligent thing to do. Someone said somewhere that "if something released to the public, it will be torn apart and put together by a gang of geeks within hours". And that would be so true for warhammer codecies... go figure.

Yeah.  That's been true for a long time, and still GW hasn't tried it.  It could very well be the best thing for the game, and free labor from GW!

I think the problem is that when it comes down to it, GW don't want to release a Codex that their customers like, they want to release a codex that their staff likes.

That's why GW haven't tried an "open beta," and that's why they probably never will.

The problem with an open beta is that GW won't know who to listen to. Or they'll listen to those who tell them what they want to hear. And how do you compile and sort comments from across the Web? It's too chaotic and uncontrolled. GW needs to expand its circle of official playtesters again, and then actually listen to them (which I understand is part of the problem).

But even then, playtesters just test what they're given. They don't have the latitude to say "umm...generic daemons? What are you thinking?"

At least they could have said that they suck donkeyballs with rules like that!

But a good point for the chaotic internet, but is it so hard to wade through a bunch of battle report and/or math analytics? Better than playing all those games all by yourself, isn't it?

It's free labor and people are happy to do it! The only problem I see is that it could decrease the sells of their codecies. (in their way of thinking that is)

There's plenty of crap on the net, but you can sort out the bad from the good. I mean for example on these forums you've seen good posts (haven't you?...)

They already use the net to balance Specialist games like Blood Bowl, and the game is much better for it.
Blood Bowl is Jervis's baby and he lets the net balance that so I see no reason why he does things differently for 40K. Unless he isn't calling the shots on that one.

GW also used the net with the TAR. It worked pretty well, I think.

At the very least, it would stop guys like Gav "use Multilasers against Falcons"  Thorpe talking out of their arse when it comes to statistics.

GW needs to stop being so archaic and embrace the net. Things like Fzorge would be shot down within days, not the 5 years it'll take for Chaos Codex 5th Edition to fix it.

I guess it's up to me to save the world..... AGAIN.

I think it's pretty obvious that Beef is one of them.  He's been placed here to counter any anti-GW sentiments by being plainly logical.  He stalks through the night sowing discord amongst harmless dakkites who are only trying to express their "feeble" opinions.  He declares whatever his masters disapprove of to be madness.

Why are you assuming they are not fully aware fo the power of Fzorge? When do you think we can expect the new Fzorgle powered Slaanesh army box?

the problem they would face by taking any kind of suggestion by anyone not already on the payroll they would have to 1 have a release for or 2 be sued by the suggestor for stealing his ideas

the simple fact of a potential lawsuit would dissuade them from ever taking unsolicited ideas even from the best intentioned gamers
