Perhaps it came from reading the Imperial Armor books, or perhaps it came from reading Eisenhorn. Either way, I've got it in my head that designing a subsector of planets on a 40k fiction forum would be fun.

I ran a similar thread with awesome success, and now I'd like to see what the enterprising minds at Dakka have to offer!

This isn't a competition. It's simply a bunch of nerdy brains all churning out planets as settings for our war-games, fiction, etc. for kicks. I'll start 'er off and we can get going. Oh, also, points for building off of existing information! If someone mentions the Black Templars, say, you should feel free to work them into your own story if it fits. Once the momentum dies down, I'll make up a map (or someone else can if they really get ancy) and compile a list of major battles, evil xeno threats, heroes, villains, etc.

IVAN MAJORIX - PLANETARY SURVEY

Summary: In M40.084, Ivan Majorix was founded as a penal colony. After hundreds of incidents with the local Arbites and long and bloody civil war (M40.908-983), Ivan Majorix was officially re-designated as an agriplanet and stopped receiving prisoners from nearby worlds. All Adeptus Arbites were re-stationed to nearby planets, with the task of upholding Imperial Law uniquely handed over to the Death Strike chapter of Adeptus Astartes, for whom Ivan Majorix became a recruiting center.

I want to contribute, but oh does this look like a bit of a commitment to come up with so much good fluff.

Its very daunting and unfortunately I don't have the free time to commit to writing something fun like this at the moment.

It was fun to read, though!

SATORUM MINOR - PLANETARY SURVEY
Summary: In M37.2, Satorum Minor was rediscovered, though it is known it was inhabited long before this, the identity of the original inhabitants has been deleted from all historical records. Satorum Minor is a large Moon orbiting the much larger ice planet Satorum Major. Upon rediscovery, it was colonised by a small civilian population and left to its own devices. The civilians built several thriving communities and have since become a largely populated feudal world. They have little contact with the rest of the Imperium except when ships arrive to collect Tithes from the world, and if they ever need military help. Occasionally adolescent males will be recruited by Space Marine chapters operating nearby, but even then little contact is made.

Extundra Media
Segmentum: Pacificum
Sub-Sector: Xanthus
System: Marculos
Inhabited Moons and Planets: 2

PLANETARY SURVEY
Summary: Extundra Media was discovered shortly after the Age of Apostasy. A fleet of mechanicus left on another quest to find a rumored STC construct, but instead all they found was Extundra, a planet rich in natural resources. They decided to create a new Forgeworld as their were none in the surrounding sectors. However due to the low Oxygen content in the air everyone is forced to wear breathing masks when they venture outside of the Factory hives.

Everybody lives in the hives, however the lower regions are never visited by those higher up and stories of cults and mutants abound. The Adeptus Arbites have a strong force present to keep the workers in line and make sure the tithe is delivered on time.
Water Supply: Supplied from Ivan Majorix in gigantic freighters designed specifically for this task
Principle Exports: Wargear, Munitions, Weapons and Tanks
Principle Imports: Food, Water, Luxury goods for the ruling Mechanicus

Major Conflicts of Note:
+In the middle of the 38th Millenium a massive army of mutants and cultists rose up from the depths of almost every hive of the planet at the same time and attacked the Adeptus Mechanicus Overseers. They were lead by a small Warband of Iron Warriors whose only goal was to take control of the world and manufacture Tanks for their Legion. The Deathstrike Space Marines and a Strike Force of Grey Knights came to the planets aid and thwarted the Chaos Space Marines efforts. Since then the Adeptus Arbites have kept a tight grip on the planet and ties with Titan have been established. The confilct also brought about the first Guard Regiment Foundings the planet had seen.

Planetary Records/Survey
Tsar VII was a bloodshed planet, exposed to much fighting during the Horus Heresy and its scars remain there today, untouched by the blessings of Chaos. Tsar VII was liberated by the legendary first Blood Raven company in 39.451. In the mountains of Ural, the largest section of the planet, the colonists erected special statues to honour the heroes of the campaign.
Tsar VII was then hit by snowstorms of unknown orgin in 40.2, destroying its outport of crops to other planets and sending it into a planet-wide poverty. It's economy was re-established in 40.57 after miners found stones, nicknamed Emperor Stones for its bright, golden color.
The wealthy of the planet live in the tundras and temperate plains of the planet. They consist of Merchants, CEO's, and Governers.
The middle-class live in the tundran undergrounds, many becoming peddlers and merchandisers. They consist of all civillians
The low-class people, however, were moved into the mountains to work as miners and slaves of the overseers. They contain miners and slaves.

____________________________________________________________________
Conflicts-(during Horus Heresy)
Battle of Ural- Led by Commander vun Einholt and Chaplain Collics, The Blood Ravens attacked one of the major strongholds of the traitor legions on planet. Chaplain Collics died while distracting the Chaos Marines for the vun Einholt to kill the leader of the Chaos stronghold. About 13,000 marines lost their life. Chaplain Collics is one of the statues in the Ural region.

Battle of Kursk I&II- Mechanized legions were spearheaded against each other in possibly the largest Tank battle in the history of the Imperium. Due to the loss of so many men, the Space Marines retreated. About a standard month later, they attacked again and destroyed the mechanized army of the Chaos forces. Estimated 35,000 tanks lost and 2,300 marines died.

Defense of Stalingrad- In an attempt to advance forces into the Space Marine territories, the Chaos forces attacked several fuel processing plant in the Urkrania section of the planet. It was there that the first usage of sniper rifles were used on the planet. After knocking down the walls, the chaos forces severely attacked the marines with tanks and a secret unit, the Spinning Dagger, an artillery based tank that shot spiralling rounds to knock down key structures and walls. The Space Marines held their ground until reinforcements arrived and attacked the force from behind, catching them off guard, and demolished the chaos forces. This was a signal of the end of the war with the chaos forces on Tsar VIII.

Mocharvia IV Survey
Mocharvia IV was found by a contingent of Ultramarines. Soon a society and a hive city was found in the northern continent but it wasnt soon before the newly found planets was attacked. Thousands of Traitour Marines launched a massive assault on the planet during the Horus Heresy but this was stopped only by the faithfull Saint Lauren and a few hundred female gaurdsmen. Ever since the planet has been at constent threats from Orks, Tyranids and Traitours but thankfully the Ultramarines are always there to help.

Cruor Fontis has a two large suns casting it in a blood red light. Thousands of years ago a large group of the the elite upper class, practised a warped version of the temple of the saviour emperor, which included blood sacrifice and almost chaos like rituals. When the nobles cast off the shackles of the imperial truth a new space marine chapter was detailed to the planet. The Blood Brothers struck in a rage of battle thirst, destroying whole hives overnight. Eventually the Blood Brothers claimed Cruor Fontis as their Home world.

Glad to see this thread is still alive. Here's an updated list of Planets, Militaries, etc.

Note that we have quite a lot of Imperial Guard regiments!

Lasgunassassin also graced us with a war against Hive Fleet Leviathan, currently being fought at Mocharvia (mok-AR-vee-uh?). My guess is that the Cruorian Brothers, being the largest Imperial Guard denomination in the subsector, will be fighting alongside the Blood Brothers, Ultramarines, and Sisters of Battle to keep those people from becoming biomass!

YEATHAN - PLANETARY SURVEY
Summary: Discovered circa M40.800, Yeathan originally thought to be a paradise with an oxygen-nitrogen rich atmosphere and a developed ecosystem. However, microorganisms present in all aspects of the ecosystem caused early explorers to enter a state of acute anaphylactic shock. In other words, Yeathan would be perfect, if not for the fact that humans were deathly allergic to it. Yeathan was abandoned for colonization.

Size: Equatorial distance – 10,100 miles.
Gravity: 1.34 G
Satellites: 1
Population: none
Climate classification: Tropical.
Mean surface temperature: 37 C
Tropospheric Composition: Nitrogen 67%, Oxygen 27%, Carbon Dioxide 6%, Sulphur 0.1%
Climatic Regions: Yeathan is largely unexplored.
Seas: Fully 90% of Yeathan is covered in water.
Climatic phenomena: Close proximity to parent star results in nearly 100% global humidity. Severe typhoons and constant rainfall impede further efforts at colonization.
Flora: 130 species cataloged.
Fauna: 233 species cataloged.
Economy: None.
Society: None.
Principle Exports: None.
Principle Imports: None.
Urbanization: None.

Recently (330999.M41) the Imperial Military has become aware of two separate breeds of tyranid fighting for Yeathan. This has prompted the Ordo Xenos to commission a taskforce to study the reasons for this conflict. The Ordo Xenos hopes to discover something in Yeathan's climate to account for the schism between these tyranid organisms and to weaponize it.

The challenge of establishing and maintaining a safe base of operations, plus supplying said base with enough anti-allergen treatments to effectively combat the inhospitable ecosystem cannot be understated.

YEATHAN TASK FORCE
Inquisitor Lord Vorheed Galleus + household
Ordo Xenos Deathwatch Taskforce (20 Marines)
Blood Brothers 4th Company (42 Marines, 10 [classified] Vehicles, Strike Cruiser Last Stand.
4th Divian Regulars (4,000 soldiers)
12th Divian Regulars (3,493 soldiers)
5th Sartoran Strikers (2,992 soldiers)
99th Catachan (3,209 soldiers)

Al Ichkeria - PLANETARY SURVEY
Summary: In M36.4, the planet was rediscovered by a rogue trader expedition fleet. Initial reports suggested a clan based warrior social structure with democratic principles in place. All ground personel were lost when the leader of the ground party offended the clan chief of the Al Jubal clan. 1700 colonists and mercenaries were killed. The planet was moved to a side note until the Knights of the Emporers Fury space marine chapter came in M39.2. The clan based structure of the planet was exactly what the young chapter was looking for and settled on the planets nothern continent. The majority of clans sent delegations to the knights and recruiting began with four years. With the arrival of the knights came advancements in technology that had been lost and unable to be produced on the planet for many centuries. Heavy use of servitors became the norm as the majority of men on the planet considered themselves above farming and mining. The planet has become rich off the resources within the mountains that could not previously be mined.

You might want to take a look at the Anargo Sector Project for some ideas on that. We've been working for a couple of years now to create an entire Imperial sector in full detail.

Check out our explore site, only a few systems have been uploaded so far (in the Anargo subsector) which you can find here:
-Anargo system
-Camulos system
-Delphinus system

More stuff is still upcoming, it's just that the uploading process isn't going so fast, we could always use more help with that by the way!

System: the Sabbat Worlds
Inhabited Moons and Planets: 1
Asteroids: -
Comets: 3, Hadrian, Jerel, Dagon

ABHAAL - PLANETARY SURVEY
Abhaal was originally inhabited by the Dark Eldar but was captured by the Imperium in M40.740. Abhaal was ruled by a strict Theocratic regime known as Imperiosus Pietas (or Imperial Devotion) up until a terrible Tyranid invasion in M40.968 when Hive Fleet Dagon (named for the comet that orbits Abhaal every ten years). The planet was plunged into a thirteen year nuclear war with the Tyranids, forcing the citizens of Abhaal into the caves and tunnels beneath the surface. The planet was once a relatively fertile world, however since the Tyranid invasion it is dead and barren. The world is ruled by gangs, the most notable of which is the Chaos Cult known as Nemesis (named for the Chaos Lord Kaigan the Nemesis who invaded Abhaal in M40.755.)

Size: Equatorial distance – 5,233 miles
Gravity: .93 G
Satellites: 4
Population: 13 billion (55% Tyranid, 25% Imperial, 10% Chaos Cults, 6% Dark Eldar, 4% Orks)
Climate classification: hot and dry.
Mean surface temperature: 75 FH
Tropospheric Composition: Nitrogen 55%, Oxygen 20%, Carbon Dioxide 24%, Other 1%
Climatic Regions: abandoned cities cover the surface of the world, six major mountain ranges.
Seas: 13% of Abhaal is covered in water.
Climatic phenomena: storms of ash due to incredibly harsh winds, it rarely rains, nuclear fallout.
Flora: 14,000+ species cataloged however only 19% can still be found.
Fauna: 2,500+ species cataloged however only 32% can still be found.
Economy: mercenaries, black market trade (drugs, weapons etc.).
Society and Government: In the years before the Tyranid invasion of M40.968 Abhaal was a strict Theocracy ruled by the religious elite. After Hive Fleet Dagon struck the planet fell into disorder and has since then been governed by powerful gangs, cults and merchant lords. Life is difficult on Abhaal, primarily due to a lack of natural resources, and society is based around an "every man for himself" world.
Water Supply: most water is imported from other worlds.
Principle Exports: Weapons, Slaves, Drugs, Fuel.
Principle Imports: Water, Mercenaries, Food.
Food supply: most people hunt for their own food although much of it is imported from other worlds.
Urbanization: the once mighty Hives on the surface are dominated by Tyranids and Cults of Chaos, most of the populace are forced to live underground.

Imperial Guard Regiments: 93rd Armageddon Steel Legion led by General Commissar Konrad Hoffman, Krieg 127th Infantry Regiment led by General Johann Vikernes.
Major Conflicts of Note: The First War of Abhaal M40.734-740 (Imperial forces claimed the planet from the Dark Eldar in a long and brutal war), the Crown War M40.043-046 (Imperial noble houses war with religious leaders for the throne of Abhaal), the Second War of Abhaal M40.755-762 (the Alpha Legion, led by the Chaos Lord Kaigan the Nemesis, invades Abhaal and is eventually pushed back by the Imperial Fists Chapter), the Tyranid Apocalypse M40.968-981 (Hive Fleet Dagon descends upon Abhaal, forcing the Imperial populace underground, results in a long nuclear war leaving the planet dead and bleak).

Inhabited Moons and Planets: 1
Asteroids: Negligible.
Comets: 2. Keigan 21 (orbits once every 37.4 years), Democritus 327 (orbits once every 134.5 years)

ARCANUS I - PLANETARY SURVEY
Summary: A gas giant of considerable girth, Arcanus I is known for its unique system of archaic pre-heresy research stations lying in low orbit, powered by the withered shell of a single Dreadnaught of the Adeptus Astartes, wired into its crystalline energy core. The researchers who first explored the ruined, but still-functioning stations discovered the ancient machine at the complex’s center, which bore the name “Brother Lazarus, the Arcanist” in faded letters. Though the circumstances through which the rusted and aged leviathan came to be fused with the core are unclear at best, the researchers named and classified the planet in honor of the entombed Marine, forever bound to the stations in body and spirit.
Arcanus I now serves as a research center for pre-heresy technology and architecture.

Size: Equatorial distance – 42,700 miles.
Gravity: 3.10 G
Satellites: 3 7-structure interconnected research stations.
Population: 21 (20 human researchers, 1 psyker)
Climate classification: Negligible.
Mean surface temperature: No real “surface” determinable – probes estimates about 23,000 K core temperature.
Tropospheric Composition: Hydrogen 87.3%, Oxygen 8.7%, Helium 4.8%, Carbon Dioxide 1%, Sulphur 0.5%, Various unidentifiable gases 0.5%
Climatic Regions: Negligible.
Seas: Negligible.
Climatic phenomena: Atmosphere is occasionally subject to inexplicable lightning surges and negative energy pulses. Research stations have been specially armored on their underside to protect against these storms, but the armor is deteriorating.
Fauna: 400+ distinguishable species of algae and bacteria living on the stations. At least 4 are unidentifiable, possibly due to rapid mutability of bacteria.
Economy: R&D.
Society: One head researcher oversees the other nineteen, though his/her position is constantly in rotation. Mutinies are uncommon, but have occurred at least twice in recent years.
Water Supply: Synthesized from atmosphere.
Principle Exports: Negligible.
Principle Imports: Fuel, food, scientific tools, manufactured goods.
Food supply: Brought from other planets in the system by spacecraft.
Urbanization: Negligible.

Imperial Guard Foundings: Negligible.
Major Conflicts of Note:
Invasion by Hive Fleet Leviathan? (M39.827?). Memory records of Brother Lazarus indicate the stations once fell to Tyranid invasion, despite its status as a poor source of biomass. To stop the stations from sinking into the planet’s chaotic gas atmosphere and melting, it is assumed that Lazarus connected his own power systems to the stations’ failing central core.
