Busy somewhere, airin' out the skin jobs.

Many of us have several different armies, but ordinarily there is one of them you Identify with. The one that if you had to sell off every single one of your armies BUT ONE...that would be the Army that you would keep.

Which one is it? How come?

Myself...Dark Angels

While they always seem to be handicapped when compared to other loyalist chapters...the fluff is so dark and sinister its great. These guys are real anti-heroes. I've played them since they had black armour. I've been through 2 armies (not including a deathwing army thats also been sold and needs rebuilding) that have been e-bayed and now I'm working on my 3rd with the new codex.

...another reason I keep coming back to them is that green is so easy to paint. I like to re-boot armies occasionally...especially when I know I've improved on my painting significantly.

I have never failed to seize on 4+ in my life!

Imperial Guard. Always fun to play, even when you are getting shredded, it is nice when you manage to pull out a victory with a battered handful of survivors.

My Dark Angels. Not my first love(Eldar), but I have a full Company, plus several Ravenwing and Deathwing squads, multiple Land Raiders(only missing 2 variants), and several other vehicles. Oh, and all the Special Characters and more Librarians than is healthy.

SoCal, USA!

That's a tough question. I'd keep either my Eldar or my Imperial Guard. Both are based around OOP minis and both represent significant effort that would be hard for me to duplicate. The Eldar army is much larger and nearly fully-painted, but the Guard has more unique conversion effort, with several scratch-builds.

My SM and CSM have been through a couple reshuffles, so it's not as much of an issue.

But really, the main question just doesn't apply, because I'm no longer in the business of shedding armies that I've put any work into, nor working on armies that I would consider selling.

Eldar for sure. I've done every single army but I always come back to Eldar.

Dont really know why, perhaps it has to do with the irony that they are the most advanced but are dying.

Rick Priestley said it best:
Bryan always said that if the studio ever had to mix with the manufacturing and sales part of the business it would destroy the studio. And I have to say – he wasn’t wrong there! The modern studio isn’t a studio in the same way; it isn’t a collection of artists and creatives sharing ideas and driving each other on. It’s become the promotions department of a toy company – things move on!

Thanks a lot Malf, now I'm going to have that song in my head all day, and no tape of Wilson Pickett to counteract it.

Guard. Because when I pull out the guard I think two things:
1. (guardsmen to everyone else) Not the face! Oh my beautiful face!
2. A reprise of the old Chicago Bears song. "We are the Guard, shuffling crew, shuffling on down, blowing it up for you!"

I like my Lizardman army. Tough, aggressive, powerful, with some tricks, while having an underlying interest in knowledge for its own sake.

Guard! Backbone of the Imperium!

I really identify with the only normal humans in the game (for good reason I suppose). In addition, I've always had a huge interest in all things military and sci-fi, and exceptionally so for the two combined (Starship Troopers hurrah!). So it only stands to reason that the Guard are for me, and I'm for the Guard.

Also I'm a closet tread head. Tanks are so cool, and if you ask me, the Imperial Guard is the only army with any 'Tanks'. A gutted transport with beefed up weaponry does not a tank make. This fact actually prevented me from getting into 40k 10 years earlier. I remember browsing the armies and saying to myself "Ok, so where the hell are all the tanks?!", and not finding a one, I became discouraged...

Sisters of Battle, all the way. Frustrating to play sometimes, but the fluff and the general "We win, we purge heretics. We lose, we martyr ourselves and win anyway" feel really works for me. Playing with different Inq builds, making tanks out of churches and having those surprise Acts of Faith to swing the battle and confound your opponent really make the army for me. I wish I had a little more variety in what I can add to the girls (marines that are not GKs mostly) but pound for pound, my big black box of lead makes me plenty happy.

Which is wierd, considering the personality and fluff of the army is about a direct 180 from my own. I suppose deep down I would love to be able to inflict my dogmatic will on others. Or at least put a bolter round through various heretics on the commute to and from work, etc.

I really like almost every force on 40k except for Dar Eldar. I started out with guard, then eldar, then chaos, then I reached my one main love: Space Marines
First I built a 3000p Ultramarines army, but I realized they were boring so now I've found my calling, with the Black Templars. They look cool, they have awesome minis and their rules are pretty fun too.
I have one last army, which I like almost as much as SM...Orks!! I'm building my second army as we speak and they are just so much fun.

It'd probably Tyranids for me, even though I haven't played them in a while. The reason is the fact you get some really fast moving troops backed up by some heavy hitters.
There are also a lot of combinations and options beyond 'Nidzilla that really appeal to me, like jumping Lictors out into the middle of a gun line, or peppering the field with spore mines while all the while the Hormagunts and CC Carnifexes move in.
It's fun stuff, even if I do get my butt handed to me.

Although I hardly ever play them anymore, Blood Angels.

They were the first proper army I collected, after the release of 2nd Edition and I just love the fiction surrounding them.

But like Teek and Big Mek, Orks have always been my favorite to model and paint. They were the second army I had collected, but Ork players never, eva, really trully stop collecting Ork armies. They are like an infectious disease. Every time you see something Tuff, 'Ard, or just Dead Orky it's like man I could convert that in a heartbeat.

The more I think about it, although I personally identify with Blood Angels more, if I had to sell off everything but a sinlge army I think I would keep the Orks over everything else.

This got lost in a LatD thread, but I feel reposting it (with some minor edits) would be useful:

Let's be honest.

If you play Lost and the Damned, you are the gayz.

If you play any of the following armies, you are the gayz:

Imperial Guard (especially Catachans and Mordians)
Squats
Kroot Mercs
Tau
Eldar
Dark Eldar
Craftworld Eldar
Ulthwe Strike Force
Dark Angels
Eldar
Necrons (in the closets)
Tyranids
Blood Angels (proud of it)
Lost and the Slammed (get it, get it!?!??!?)
Eldar
Daemons (yes, even Nurgle)
Chaos Space Marines (except Alpha Legion)
Ultramarines
Daemonhunters
Armored Company
Black Templars
Eldar
Witchhunters*

The only way to not be a raving homosexual and play Warhammer 40K is to play the following armies:

Orks
Feral Orks
Kult of Speed
Space Wolves
Salamanders
13th Company

Sorry. But that is a fact.
