Just trying to keep a positive outlook. I took a look at GW's current offerings on their website and was struck by how useful and cool some of the new packs are. My favorite are the Dark Eldar Prisoners. And shoulder pads just got alot cheaper. They used to go for $1.50 per pad, now they're $8.00 for 10. Nice! It's not all bad and it's going to get better. So post your favorite pack here and keep the positive Karma flowing.

Well I kind of moved near Toronto, actually.

assuming they're available to Canada I might pick up some psycannon arms, but I'll probably just convert something.

It looks like they're just concentrating on bits that actually sell.

No sign of weapons or anything interesting.

I looked at the bitz packs and died a little bit inside. I can't believe the once legendary GW bitz service has been reduced to this.

The 40k range is pretty decent, and by decent I mean, if you want to convert SM chapters of various varieties (evil or loyalist), or need extra grots.

The entire fantasy range has been reduced to: Rhinox, Hounds of Orion, Sabretusk and BARRELS. That's fantastic.

For all those LOTR converters, you can get Balrog wings. It's the only choice, but feel free to buy as many as you want! Wicked for all those non LOTR GD conversions where you can't win, and awesome if you ever wanted to convert a Bilbo Baggins with Balrog Wings.

This whole revamp is symptomatic of the whole GW mentality of taking something that was sort of working but kind of unwieldy, canning it (with little or no transitionary period), claim to be replacing it with a better system - launches said better system with only support to a tiny subset of what used to be supported, promises updates, but then releases said updates at a glacial pace. If GW thinks that their customer base is so ingrained (or insensitive) that they won't care that support has been cut off, with no real assurance of being restored in the near future - they've completely lost touch with their customer base.

At this rate, we might see full support of the GW range (all armies) in 2012.

No kveching, please! I asked for favorite packs. Yes the range is limited for now but it will expand. There are other threads for wailing and knashing of teeth so let's just talk about what we like about it so far. Of course Space Marines get the initial love. It's like printing money so why wouldn't they? Give it time and have some patience.

And I'm changing my favorite. I really like the Imperial Fist conversion pack. That is exactly the kind of thing that can be a real strength for the new bitz service. I don't play that chapter but I like the mix of bitz in it.

If you don't like what you see then what would you like to see? Post your idea of the perfect bitz pack for your favorite range here.

I like the GK arms kits, though what I want is a box of special weapons for Marines (and Sisters, if they ever get made in plastics.) Then I want a box of skulls and other decorative bitz. Then a Big Bag O' Boobs.

So, in order:

1: Kill tools.
2: Trophies/decorative paraphrenalia.
3: Mammaries.

I'd love to post a 'favourite bitz pack', but to be honest they're so painfully dull that I can't find the enthusiasm for a single one. Let's see: thirty flavours of Space Marines :S and some ork bits...
Well, I guess the Grot Assistants pack, because it's got some fun models that can actually be used for something other than one fixed idea?

Requests for a Bitz pack? Now there's some fun.
1) Servo arms and bionics – servo arms from the servitor models, Techpriest enginseer backpack, Techmarine servoarms, Fabius Bile backpack arms and the Necromunda bionics
2) Backpacks – All the Necromunda backpacks in one easy-to-buy package
3) Weapon sprues: Imperial autoguns; eldar storm guardian bits;
4) Skulls – combine all the ork, genestealer, horned human, beastman, skaven skulls etc. into one pack.

While we're at it, let's get some NEW! MAIL ORDER EXCLUSIVE! WOW! (...and breathe) sculpts like GW promised:
1) Imperial civilians
2) Ork oddboyz – and I ain't talking old Gorkamorka sculpts repackaged for the umpteenth time
3) Characterful troop models – a cadian sentry smoking a rho stick, for example
4) Casualty markers – dead, dying and injured soldiers...

+++Edit+++
...and for feth's sake, do we really need more dioramas with those overused Dark Eldar prisoners? Jeebus. :S

Once upon a time the Hounds of Orion were big mastiffs - great for accompanying IG Officers as trademark items or for Librarian familiars.

I suppose I could find a use for the new hounds, but they look more like Afghans or Salukis than gruff wolfhounds...

Am I crazy or are the GK psycannon arms for the terminators? I thought you could only have one in a squad.

I don't want anyone to think I'm being pollyannaish about this, as the loss of the bits program seems like what the GW rules writers have referred to as wielding the scalpel and cutting too deeply, but the grot packs are really nice. The iron hands pack, provided it has all the regular tactical squad stuff in there too. If I remember it had enough stuff to spread across half an army.

I just noticed that you can buy a pair of dark angels upgrade sprues in the space marine section. Is that new? Maybe they'll get some of the more useful sprues back up eventually.

Hmm...

Favorite Bitz Pack?

I just don't know. There are so MANY to choose from.

The only one that gets me in the willies is the "pack" of LOTR Balrog wings.

I LOVE them for Daemon Princes.

How did they manage to be able to sell LOTR in bitz? I thought there was some kind of an agreement NOT to?

I dig the Deathwatch bitzpack, it's IIRC a little cheaper then buying the stuff individually. The Iron Warriors pack is likewise fairly reasoanble.

I'm a big fan of the shoulder pad packs in general. Sure, it'd be nicer to be able to buy both singles and an econo-pack, but after freehanding chapter and squad marks on 100+ marines, part of me wishes I'd just sprung an extra $160 for molded pads....

Without a doubt, BOMB SQUIGS !!

Why you ask ?

Because the Tankbusta squad comes with 2 and you can only filed 3 per squad, but the blister comes with 4.

You can field 3 Tankbusta squads in a normal game.
If you buy 3 Tankbusta box sets and a Bomb Squigs Blister you end with 1 more squig than you can legally field, and they can't be used in any other squad.

But still Adam, what endears them to you if that is the case ?

Oh it's simple, I'm not buying any Tankbustas.

I thought it was just that you weren't supposed to use them in conversions for GT's and GD competitions.

Under the couch

There was no agreement not to, they simply didn't do it because it was complicated to sort out royalties.

They changed their minds a year or two back, though, and they started offering models individually that had originally only been available in the boxed sets and a limited range of bits through Mail Order.

H.B.M.C., as a counter-point, what happened to the price-per-part?

In a sane world I'd assume the 'bitz packs' would be cheaper than the parts within were when sold separately, but I know GW math doesn't work that way.

I'd answer for a project of my own I've wanted to do for a while (Converting Steel Legion to be Inquisitorial Stormtroopers) but I'm completely SOL as Steel Legion troopers are unavailable, even by the box.

Psycannon arms

So here's the math, though.

17 dollars for terminator with psycannon x5 = 85
55 terminator box + 12 psycannon bitz = 67

I guess that's not such a bad deal.

As far as fitting 5 terminator psycannons in a list, you're
looking at a minimum of 451 points (2 minimum termie
squads, leader with psycannon + 1 psycannon upgrade
and a single Inquisitor elites choice with artificer armor
and a psycannon).

Over on the Dream Pod 9 forums we have been lobbying for, essentially, Bitz Packs... Or I guess DP9 would call them Blitz Packs.

DP9 doesn't do any sort of component service beyond replacing miscast parts, of course. They do mention in one place that you can email and they'll talk, but nothing formal.

In general, the fans seem happy with the current weapon packs and would like more: a paratrooper pack has been discussed, and there's been talk of doing variants and similar in that form. The nifty MP Squad is much like some of the gw boxes where you're essentially buying a normal kit and additional pieces.

Bitz Packs, in theory, are fine. It's mainly that GW has (as usual) been somewhat hamfisted in the implementation. Maybe of they had released the packs concurrently with the old bitz service instead of dumping one for the other. Also, using the change as an excuse to remove a lot of models from the store hasn't gone over well.

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.

I think they're meant to be cheaper, but the trade-off is you have
to buy in volume and your selection is more limited than before.

$25 for the Night Lords bits? You used to be able to buy an actual squad of Night Lords for $35. Though I guess that since Night Lords don't exist any more, models of them must be harder to come by.

Here's a problem with the bitz packs until they start
retooling for it:

Models people want to convert were not designed with
bitz packs in mind.

Space Marines >>> Grey Knights doesn't work

Grey Knights >>> Psycannons doesn't work (GK troops
are modeled with the gun in one piece).

Imperial Guard >>> anything at all doesn't work so long
as they model weapons without the hands on them and
plastic models with the hands on them.

Which kits probably work best?

Orks.
