I just posted a hello over in the Introductions forum, but am now posting here because I'm quite interested to know what sort of sci-fi or fantasy models you all will be looking for. I'm a new manufacturer of wargaming miniatures, and plan to release quite a bit of new sci-fi/fantasy pieces under my The Thing in the Crate label, as well as my mainline 15mm historical range (which I assume most of you would not be interested in).

Aaron Brown of Black Crab Sculpting is already creating my first batch of sci-fantasy type warriors in 28mm, though what they are is a surprise. They are being made to fight in units, however, and will have a range of weapons and troop types that will make them suited for most current sci-fantasy games, such as 40k and other. Expect to see them in a few months, hopefully by mid spring at the latest.

Very soon I plan to release my very first sci-fi piece, a reptilian atomic monstrosity in 1/2400th scale! Just a few weeks from that.

Beyond that, the drawing board is open. Anything you'd like to see? I want to provide what you want, not what I want you to want. Cheers.

(ps: if you are a very good sculptor looking to get your sculpts bought for sale to the public, just drop me a note along with an image of a sample sculpt at the mailing address on my website.)

Generic Heroic scale 28mm sci-fi Civilians and Cultists(robed or otherwise) on 25mm Round bases. Options should include just pistols or just improvised melee weapons and the ability to combine them for pistol/melee combos.

Not that I want to make a Bell of Lost Souls style Genestealer cult because my club allows it or anything...

For me it's all about converting. So I would say no matter what you make, seperate heads and arms are a must. Unless the figure demands everything be made as one unit, try to keep them interchangable (compatibility with GW plastics is a big plus).

West Wind and Pig Iron have both gotten a lot of sales by selling gas mask heads and such.

I second the vote for gothic-style civilians and cultists and would add mutants. We can never have too many shambling, bandaged, robed figures crawling out of the sewers with their zip guns and molotav cocktails.

A booster pack of backpacks, holsters, ammo packs and the like compatable with GW IG would sell tons, as would more heads. As I said West Wind and Pig Iron have already done gas masks but I think beastial masks, deformed heads, and so on would be good.

Booster pack of pistols, shot guns and heavy weapons are also in demand. My favorite blister pack EVER was a $4 pack from Warzone of nothing but gatling guns. I've supplied 2 or 3 whole armies out of that pack. A gattling gun, RPG, 50 cal HMG, pack would sell very well.

Again there is a huge demand to stuff people can add to marines or guard that make them unique but still meet the reguirements to be GW models. I'm not saying you have to be a producer of after-market stuff for GW but some of that will get sales and will get interest.

DON'T FORGET GW recently killed their US bitz service, so anyone looking for such things now has to go to other companies.

That being said, follow your muse. There was a time when GW's look was revolutionary and who's to say the next big thing won't come from another start up.

Robed cultists, hive gangers / road warriors, bionic packs would all be great for some solid sci fi humans.

I'm also always interested in well done aliens, particularly those with squad upgrades like you mentioned. Armored or nekkid, that's up to you. Vaguely humanoid is preferred, but you can be REAL vague if you like

Another vote for cultists and mutants!

Just to build on the converting point, you don't have to build your line towards being a converter's source alone... but if your bitz conveniently fill the needs of GW/PP converters, you will have captured more of the market than your line would alone.

That said, decent plastic "droptooper"-looking minis would be nice.

And riding beasts- like reptilian/ox-like cavalry mounts- would probably sell well too.

Infinity: Way, way better than 40K and more affordable to boot!

Everything Kid_Kyoto said times ten. Also I'd buy civilian corpses or piles of corpses if they looked generic-future-gothic-GRIMDARK rather than the Fantasy-type dead farmers you usually see.

The Cultist art makes me think of sanctioned psykers... It would be nice to see them do cultists/L&TD/Genestealer Cultists/Imperial Rabble/etc. as a base sprue and add-on sprues with at least some minimal rules support.

Female cadians. The project has been done before, however the chicks were smiling. There was the change in quantity for the same price that I may still be bitter about....

I'd be interested to see what you have come up with. Mostly I'm looking to incorporate females into my cadian army.

Superhero minis.

Generic types, spandex, leather, etc.

Maybe some Iron Age guys, a couple of golden age, etc.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

I was trying to think of what I would want as far as Fantasy miniatures go, and everything I thought of is already done by some company somewhere. P'raps this is a failure of imagination on my part. So, I am interested to see the surprise Aaron Brown is working on.

@Grot- there are lots of generic superhero miniatures out there, though they can be a bit tricksy to find. Check out http://www.agisn.de/html/sub_atomics.html. Agis found them, they are out there. Try Old Glory for starters: http://www.oldgloryminiatures.com/products.asp?cat=336

As always, Kyoto-sama has the wisest words, but being more interested in WHFB type stuff these days, another direction you may consider is renaissance era civilians. Something that fit in with empire plastics for scale, and was aimed at the roleplayer may be profitable. Aside from the obvious WHFB and WHFRP connections, there are other games set in the renaissance era where quality civilians would be useful.

Looking forward to what you produce.

Various alien mounts would be cool. Something that wasn't a giant lizard or other near-earth quadraped...possibly an insect or arthropod.

If you're interested in vehicles more some modern military style bike would be interesting, as would a suitably gothic civilian vehicle or two...thinking cult limos and transport trucks with trailers.

Colonial style infantry akin to GW's Praetorians or professional dress infantry in the same vein as Mordians.

A sprue of crushed heads, severed limbs, and highly mutilated body parts for basing and conversion purposes.

Alternative fantasy civilians. Its easy enough to come up with human commoners, but much harder to model the like for races like Elves or Chaos (even marauders have to eat).

Awww, I asked in another thread for 'Raptor' mounts for my Assault Marines, now I feel passe!! lol

What would be a nice thing is a 'Track' mounted lower body. So from the waist down you have all of the various "Iron Age' cyborg replacements for your legs.

The Ork players might go nuts for those, as would Imperial players, of all varieties, IMHO.

I second Kid Kyoto's desires, and wish to add

FEMALES IN GENERAL!

Heads, torsoes, legs, arms, everything. Getting peices is a pain, and GW hasn't made a new female human in years. For all the fluff about female inquisitors, IG, mutants and what not, there are very few mini's to match. They don't have to be topless or what not, just normal looking miniatures/bitz that people could use to build various things.

I had the brief idea of trying to make a handful of Rough Riders on giant hermit crabs (well, giant fromt heir POV) based around the new Carnifex bits.

Sadly reality set in. I only used IG as allies to my Witch Hunters, I was already dissatisfied with GW for rules-related reasons, and I have too many unpainted projects as-is.

Wait, were the hermit crabs going to be living? That would be awesome, to trick out their shells with little Rough Riders on them, and then watch them chase each other around the aquarium.

No, just using real shells to make some roguh riders that really aren't on anything horse-like... Althoguh if you looke into Hermit Crabs, a lot of owners do buy decorated shells for them, so 40k decorated shells would not be out of the ordinary!
