I've been playing it for a few hours now. Decided to play as the Marines the first time around, and was shocked to see they removed the option for the 5th Heavy Weapon!
I was actually happy about that as it's one of the changes I never agreed with. 4 is enough.
What I don't agree with is the removal of Power Fists as a weapon for Vet Sergeants. It's Power Swords or bust. Kinda lame really.
The good news is Servo-Skulls now just sit and exist rather than slowly losing health. They're invisible, and can detect enemy units, making them vital scouting units especially against Infiltrating units like Stealth Suits.
As far as the actual game goes, rather than nitpicking, I don't think the flying units really add anything to the game. I've used both the Lightning and the Tempest, and in all honesty, I just hate the way they've been implimented. They sit still and shoot like VToL craft - even the damned Marauder Bomber does this! Only the Tempest should be doing that (and the Valk/Vult had they included it over the Marauder). The rest should be actually flying, constantly, never stopping. Basically, if you can't do non-VToL air-craft like Supreme Commander/Total Annihilation did (ie. they always fly around when they're in the air - they don't stop dead and defy gravity), then don't bother with aircraft at all.
It's just silly watching a Marauder bomber stop, turn on a dime, and then fly somewhere else. I'm assuming - not that I've seen them yet - Reaver Jetbikes will have the same problem.
The campaign is nice. The map is huge with lots and lots of provinces to take over. The planet I'm on has Orks and Tau on it 6 provinces on it, which is about 1/3rd of what was in Dark Crusade. Now there are four planets and 3 moons, so there's quite a lot to take over.
Really enjoying it.

The flying thing has been a feature of games like Total
Annihilation and Supreme Commander (I think that's
the name of the game). Starcraft had the floater fliers
everywhere (though it made some sense with things like
Mutalisks) but yeah, you'd think they'd have made fliers
a bit more interceptor-y.

Well the Sob look a bit weird the "Emperor's pointy Breasts" might be an army name that soon will become famous. I started today with Chaos and their flyer thingys are not that bad they do average damage against buildings and are a good alternative to the other chaos vehicels in the campaign. What strikes me a bit is the second name of the Alpha Legion General (yes Alpha Legion again I don't know why) "Carron". Does not sound very evil. The Necron Lord in the german version speaks a bit like General Gryphius. And you will see a pretty well... "sad" picture when beating Eldar.
To the gameplay, the Campaign is nearly he same as in Dark Crusade you got fancy warp portal for hopping from planet to planet and to do so you got to conquer them in a take and hold mission. First I thaught "Yay! Diffrent mission settings on every map!" but that's not the case. What changed to Dark Crusade they toned down the rush a bit. You do not have your old base when you defend a map, you now need to destroy all the enemy buildings not just the HQ, but rushing in with your honour guard still does the trick. I think that were the major diffrences. And you got an archive button which gives you some fluff about the map you playing, not always intersting but a nice feature.
A lot of good designed maps like them very much!
A major change in Chaos game play is that the heretic loses hp more slowly and builds faster and Possesed kick ass again. But I think if you playing on the Internet Raptor Rush would be the major tactic again.
Was it worth the buy? I think yes.

I wasnt expecting to pick this up, I've been really short of cash since I'm saving up for a nice Adepticon.
My GF saved me though. Never mentioned the game to her...never. While we're fixing dinner, she has me go into her backpack for her thermos, sneaky thing, and has the game planted inside her backpack for me to find, THE DAY it came out. I've got NO idea how she knew about this game. I guess I'll have to keep her.
Sisters seem super easy to me. Ordinarily in these games, unless I get bored all I do is spam infantry, late game getting all of the upgrades.
Battlesisters squads are awesome against infantry (5 flamers/5 Heavy bolters/or a mix), and Celestians against vehicles and buildings (2 meltas & 2 Multi-Meltas). Nothing really to figure out there.
Not sure about the vehicles yet, except unlike in 40k, the excorcist isnt very good. Immolator rush is pretty darned effective though. You can roll up to six of them, with two retaining heavy flamers, and 4 with twin Multi-Meltas makes for a very effective rush. I might try to figure out how to get Immolators really fast, they're reallly good.
...and the living saint is CRAZY awesome. Great to help out my infantry late game.

from what i've heard the storyling in the campaign makes no sense what so ever, and doesn't explain why the sisters are there fighting both the marines and the guard... also ther eis no banter between the commanders during the final base assaults which always made the base attacking in DC so amazing. if the sotryline is poor i din't think i'd ge ti tcause it would only piss me off with complete lack of sense going on. Also the new Blood Raven space marine comamdner sounds like a complete epic slow and why is he described as having 5 companies under him?
|
The Imperium of Man is able to traverse the Warp with difficulty when their Emperor concentrates from his golden life support machine and lights the way. Unfortunately, because the Emperor has the attention span of the average 5-year-old Pokemon fanboy, this means that many an unfortunate Imperial ship has had the WTF WHERE'D THE LIGHTS GO experience, which in the Warp is invariably fatal. |

The story is absolutely ABYSMAL.
I've beaten the Guard and Chaos so far as Sisters of Battle. I figured these two would make for the most obviously interesting opponents. Nah.
General Stubbs (ZOMBIE!) just asks for status reports and rants about how awesome his city used to be to his lackey Commissar.
Chaos Lord Carron just wails about killing for fun along with his cultists. *YAWN!*
Neither of these, though, involved MY army at all. They were just monologues. In fact, I don't think I've seen one bit of dialogue from a sister of battle yet! I feel quite disconnected with my army, my general, and my purpose in this war.
It does at least make an attempt to explain the Sisters fighting other loyalists, saying that they decided the taint of the Warpstorm (which they may have even summoned) has corrupted the Guard, and they need to be purged by fire. EVERYTHING needs to be purged by fire. Still doesn't explain why Space Marines or Guard would attack THEM, but whatever.
I think my favorite part of Dark Crusade was the interesting story with banter between the race's commanders, setting a good reasoning as to why this war was going on. And the special missions for the strongholds and strategic resources. This time around, though, they bundled the strategic resources into stronghold maps, so most of the time it's just annihilate the enemy (take and hold is used for Warp Gate maps, which COULD be interesting but is so god damned easy it's sad).
Friggin yawn.
The fliers are not impressive, they're more of a throw-back to Starcraft days. Which is ok, I guess. If this were not the 'last legs' expansion I would've expected more, but since it is I can let it fly without a more robust flight system. (The game really wasn't designed to support it, you can tell)
They did the Sisters alright, though, as far as armies go. The Faith point system is interesting, and can be VERY powerful, but won't break the game I don't think.
All in all I give it a 6 out of 10. It's more of the same, which is both the biggest plus and the biggest negative. And it loses points for being on engine that's seriously showing its age. It'll tide me over for a bit, but Dawn of War 2 better be well underway...

Well someone has to be in charge, right? You send 5 Marine Companies into combat... the 5 Captains don't take a vote. One is elected the leader of the Task Force, and you go from there.

The whole game is a throw-back to Starcraft days, what with the repetative base-building, the constant need to research every upgrade in every new Warzone (Captain! We've forgotten how to manufacture Power Swords because we've moved to a different part of the continent... we'll have to research them again!).

So I got the game yesterday and I started the campaign. I chose Eldar and I am on a planet with Necrons. The wierd thing is that after I conquer a province and have to defend it, the buildings that I built are gone. I literally start the battle with nothing in my base. Is this now normal or is it the Necron special power?
Please advise,

512 mb is pretty dog-slow nowadays, especially for a newish game. With that low amount of RAM, I'm going to guess you have a slower CPU, which will only compound the issue.
If it's a gaming machine, I'd go for 2gb. RAM has gotten to be sooo cheap nowadays.

512mb may be slow but I'm just shocked to go from 1 expansion (Dark Crusade) where the game ran fairly quickly and perfectly fine, to the next expansion where I have time to put an actual necron model together between load screens. Plus if the game is going to run slow on 512mb of ram then the recommended amount should be 1 or 2GB if it will run at reasonable speed only with that much ram.

Perturabo wears Dorns pride on a chain around his neck, even to this day. Suprisingly they look like a pair of testicals...
The Imperial Fists have the worst victory record of all the Emperor’s Legions. Imperial Fists are 0-1-1 (no recorded victories, lost to Iron Warriors, and they like to call the defense of Earth a 'Draw').
SotE, Bro H, & Nur... (nevermind) suck almost as much as Dorn.
Konrad Cruze beat Dorn like a rented mule and left him wailing like a norwegian fisherman. He tore chunks out of him, including his spleen, his tonsils, his pride...everything but his heart (because that wuss has no heart). Then the Night Haunter stood on his chest, while Dorn looked like swiss cheese wearing a used feminine hygene product. When he finally let Dorn up, Dorn ran for the little girls room to cry and change his wet panties... |

but, i still have to agree with hbmc.
the whole "flier-sitting-in-the-air-bobbing-up-and-down-once-in-a-while" thing already struck me as odd during the demo. and the de flier didnt really seem so impressive firepower wise. at least not when something actually fires back.
