If I were to play a shooty combat squad army I would take the following:

- Master w. power weapon & storm bolter
-4x five man tactical Marines with a plasma gun and razorback
-3x five man Dev squad with 2x lascannon
3x LST

That is right at 1500 points. To me this is one way to min-max the new Marines.

It's incredibly weak.

You really don't want to try this in 5th edition, it doesn't work.

Would it be worth it dropping a LST for powerfists on each of the Vet Sgts? Or have you found the 5 man squads to fragile?

EDIT: Also, you can save points if you take a 10 man Dev squad with 4 Lascannons and then combat squad them.

I would not take any power fists in the tactical squads until you break the 1500 point level. I would much rather have the LSTs for shooting and objective grabbing. I also like three Dev squads so you can shoot at another enemy unit.

With Combat squads, you can break the 10 man unit into 2 5 man units and target different units. And its cheaper:

5 man 2 x Lascannon: 160 pts x 2 = 320 pts.

10 man, 4 x Lascannon: 305 pts. With combat squad: 152.5 pts per unit.

The ONLY difference is one less Vet Sgt (and we all know how important they are on Dev squads).

I've gone from not liking it at a glance, to kinda liking it, to totally unsure.

GBF are you planning to just keep the tac squads mounted until they pop the razorbacks... do razorbacks even have a firepoint? (total marine noob here hehe)

If those razorbacks are HBs. I think it MIGHT have enough firepower to hurt key units. maybe enough to protect the 4 tiny scoring units.

Are you not liking the size and quantitiy of the tactical squads stelek? Is it orks that are thinking about?

I would be interested in that batrep GBF, if you've got some free time.

Please check out my current project blog

Feel free to PM me to talk about your list ideas....

I have said combat squads work for Devs so I cannot fault you there... I went with five Dev squads so I could have the option to run 3 lascannons in each unit. Nine lascannons can win games.

The razorbacks are plain jane with no upgrades... that means they all have heavy bolter turrets. I would just park them and shoot the heavy bolters most games with the squads starting disembarked.

That's an expensive Heavy Bolter. Accurate, but I think I'd rather plunk for the other half of a Tactical squad, a Lascannon armed specialist, and put the savings towards something expensive and Elite.

The razorback is only 50 points... I think that is a great deal. You can use the razorbacks to simply shoot, transport the tactical Marines to claim objectives or block enemy LOS.

Remember this list is simply an exercise to min max the new Space Marines... shaving as many points possible and maximizing the overall number of guns.

I will post up a batrep tomorrow evening as I would like to get a copy of the Tyranid list. The game was 1850 points so keep that in mind.

I would suggest a 10 man dev squad though. Its more comp friendly and saves 15 points.

I think a standard Shooty Ork horde list would use it for target practice.

I think the best new style marine lists are going to be podding based, unless you're BA's.

Without that, I say you want 3x Whirlwinds, and get your lascannons elsewhere or just rely on Meltas.

Considering 5th Ed stuff, I'd say 2x Whirlies and a LRC w/ Terminators, and ditching lascannons whole hog for Meltas, who become the best way to deal with tanks under the rumored new rules.

I did have a chance to get in a quick small game against orks last night. I won again. I used the RZBs to build a shield wall against Lootas and SAG then destroyed the orky transports with lascannons as they came around the RZBs. LSTs and Marines shot up the passengers falling out.

What about this.

HQ:Commander 120 (Power Weapon, Storm Bolter)

5: 5 Man Troops with Plasma Guns

Heavy:
Predator Destructor 105 (2 Heavy Bolter, 1 Auto Cannon, 1 Storm Bolter)
Predator Destructor 105 (2 Heavy Bolter, 1 Auto Cannon, 1 Storm Bolter)
Predator Destructor 105 (2 Heavy Bolter, 1 Auto Cannon, 1 Storm Bolter)

Elite: But not really!
Tech Marine and 4 Gun servators 175 ( 4 Heavy Bolters)
Tech Marine and 4 Gun servators 175 ( 4 Heavy Bolters)
Tech Marine and 4 Gun servators 175 ( 4 Heavy Bolters)

54 Heavy Bolter Shoots, 6 Auto cannon shots, 5 Plasma Gun Shoots, 6 Storm bolter Shoots.

Total 1485

Crazy list.

Sounds like you fought a "normal" Ork army. I'm talking about an Ork army that's on the level with Nidzilla: No vehicles, all infantry, pretty much based around 80 Shootas, 24 Lootas, 16 Storm Boyz, Boss on Bike, and the Mek to give the Shootas a KFF save. You just do not have the shots to put the army down, and it will likely out shoot you as well as threaten you with very good and very fast assault elements.

Pretty much all the big guns that could hurt a horde are very easily dispatched: AV10 Speeders, AV11 Razorbacks.

I can see how you'd deal with things like Nidzilla, which is pretty cool, but I've seen shootier Marine armies based out of the normal Dex that are better than this struggle with a well built & played Zilla list.

Mech Eldar are also a problem since they just have to kill 3 5-Man squads and then the Falcons get to run wild. I just think it's too static to work, especially if the terrain is as heavy as it was last year at the tournaments I went to.

Yes Voodoo it was a more typical Ork army with a few mobs, some trukks, lootas and SAG carrying Mekk.

@ Nurglitch - I am really busy with final preparations for Adepticon. I am going to post up a batrep for the Godzilla Nid beat down but that is all I have time for now. I hope you enjoy it and have some cherished memories of my DA shooting their way to victory!

@ corwindal - these are the kinds of list we should be creating!!! F*ck Jervis and his combat-eusque squaddies!

Corwindal, that kind of force could take down VB's Ork Horde but of course would struggle against Nidzilla or Mech Eldar. Also, Pred Destructors with Storm Bolters are only 100 points each. What you could do is take 2 Pred Destructors and one Vindicator, you have the points.

EDIT: I also like the idea of setting up in such a way that the TechMarines are next to the Tanks. Orks (and even Nids) would really struggle to destroy those tanks.

So you're opponent screwed up? Hmmm. I find validating an army works better when mistakes are left out.

If you use the RB's to limit return fire, you can pop more than one TMC a turn with that list. I'm impressed though, you've found a way to Min-Max DA. Shame that the only "DA" thing that you've actually used is the cheap razorback...
