well there is a time and a place for clowns - but I haven't got any harlequins yet!
I think This one is probably going to be the most colourful one - he is sorta like a thousand sons but with extra zing. I'm trying not to worry to much about the end effect and just enjoy splashing some colour around - but its not over yet so anything could happen Automatically Appended Next Post: and yes - chaos clowns - interesting concept - I think at least 50% of the people I know are terrified of clowns to the point of phobia

I wonder if I should paint some eyes on his shoulderpads and knee. green cats eyes. Or maybe I should move on... Automatically Appended Next Post: yeah the green pipes weren't so bad - they are metalic green which probably helps.

Yeah I think the metallic green works, I used to use a lot of metallics on my old CSMs. A cat's eye on the shoulder would look pretty cool, not sure about the knee - might start getting a little busy?

yes any more busy and he might distroy my eyes.
I feel at a bit of a loss as to what too paint now - too much choice. Maybe I should do a bit of eldar?
Do you have any good links to pics of what john blanche used to paint? I feel like I need some inspiration and google is just giving his paintings which I am familiar with.

No, afraid not Just spent a few moments trying various searches and could only find a copy of the blanchitsu that appeared in a recent WD and one pic of his minotaur lord with the mona lisa standard. Luckily for me I still have all my old WDs (well nearly all) and can peruse the old articles at my leisure, but I'd have thought there were some examples to be found on t'internt.
Not getting bored of your old imps are you? Some eldar might be nice, and there's always those chaos squats.

Monkeytroll - saw the ogre with the mona lisa - amazing work and pretty bizare also! - If you can let me know roughly which WD he did his column in it might help - sometimes they come up on ebay for 99p a pop and I got a great one the other day with 1988 golden demon photos in it. actually that might be an idea - I should go visit the golden demon gallery website (unofficial). that always inspires me. I'm probably just having a mid-army crisis.
JB - Do it! you wont regret it. Its amazing how time flies isn't it! I don't feel that old - but my toys are from a different century.
I quite liked the old orks and I used to collect them the first time round but lost interest when they re-released orks for the third edition - they were just too mean looking and seemed to have lost that happy go-lucky approach they were famous for. Of course they were a great improvement on that horrible plastic goff ork that came with the game in 2nd edition!
Do you have any of the old metal freebooters? they were my personal favourites

Yeah, no problem I'll pull 'em out tonight and have a flick through them - it's been an age since I looked at them anyway.
The old orks were some of the ones I ignored back in the day, just had real issues painting orks back then - my adolescent mind just seemed to go 'they're orks they'd be badly painted' (I actually seemed to do more painting back then )
As a consequence I only picked up a few and now I've fallen in love with the greenskins (really shouldn't have taken me so long with their obvious conversion potential) I'm really regretting that fact.

who ever said the 80's were the decade taste forgot? I doubt it was you Weetyskemian44. There must be a great sense of retribution having finally got what you " lusted after "? for such a long time. your blog has a sacrosantic quality not found with the plethora of plastic (but nicely detailed) models about nowadays, not to get too nostalgic but even your background pics are retro! feel like i opened up issue 101 of wd (incidently first one i baught ) and you have the advantage of not having to go into your local gw which can get a tad irksome with the hard sell and all that jazz!
oh i better go before i get grumpy at the injustice of it all..

Well had a quick flick through some old WD's for you (can't resist those chewwies ) but didn't find as much JB mini's as I thought. The blanchitsu articles I came across were more him talking about various painting/modelling aspects with most of the pics showing other 'eavy metal artists. Guess that's the old rose-coloured specs entering into my nostalgia , I'll have a deeper delve over the weekend and see what I can find, may take some pics of some of the other stuff anyway, it's all good.
I'm very much a nocturnal animal, which really doesn't help as I'd much rather be going to bed a few hours before work insists I get up 4.30 seems a reasonable late nigt, certainly not a good time to be getting up.
edit: found a couple while I ate dinner:
Pics are a bit dodgy, bit of reflection, are they worth a chewwy?

Uh...no...my Orks are older than the freebooterss...think back to the very first Orks when the Rogue Trader rulebook was published. Yes, the ones with bolters, heavy bolters, and plasma guns. I have one of the boxed sets, an original Killer Kan like model, a dune buggy, and a lot of the two figure blister packs. I'll have to look at the The Stuff of Legends website to see which of the original Orks I'm missing. I'd like to have the full set from the first run.

I know the ones you mean. I love that stuffof legends site - its great for a browse through. just think how nice they would look with a nice new paintjob. looking at your gallery you have good skills.
Monkeytroll - thanks!! thats helpful - i love those pics. Looking at that i think I need deeper shadows and much paler highlights on my neon marine to tone him down a bit and give him some class and stop him glowing at me from across the room.
neil101 - yeah definitely. I actually hated the 80s while it was happening but then immediately got nostalgic for new romantic electro and fluorescent socks as soon as it was over...

Why stop him glowing? You know you did it as a subconscious reminder of those flourescent socks
Which I don't think you should be all that nostalgic for, electro - yes, new romantic - yes, mis-matched flourescent bobby sox - give that one a miss
Although to be fair the latter part of the 80's was just a mis-matched alcoholic blur to me

He looks great but then I put him next to the cultists and he looks garish and wrong - I said they wouldn't be all the same paint scheme but they've gotta look good together as a group. I think a very watered down dark wash followed by paler highlights. And then I will paint this chap - (pic from the old rulebook not my painting)

Heh, I actually quite liked those paints, although I was mainly using enamel back then, and I guess I was one of those that used it on a whole bunch of stuff it should'nt have gone near, but I blame it on the shallowness of youth.

That WD101 is interesting. I have two of those figures (goblin archer and orc shaman). They are still part of my Orc and Goblin army for Warhammer. I mixed in my old, old Orcs and Gobbos with the newer variety. They actually blend in pretty well since I keep the Orc regiments separate.
I have a couple of old human minis too that are painted but they're not in that WD. Automatically Appended Next Post: Weety, the Chaos Warrior looks good to me. A bit more exotic than the palatte that I normally use but then I tend to paint pretty mundane armies - Orcs, Orks, Cadians, and Ultramarines. I also overuse black, green, and blue. I probably need to try something new and experiment with some of the colors that you are using.
Have you ever read any non-GW painting guides? CMON has a decent one. I wonder if Reaper has any?
