Subject: Modeling Scarbrand from the Deamon codex?

I would like to include Scarbrand in my Deamon army. However, there is currently no model of him. Using a regular Bloodthirster (minus the wings) seems a little lacking, and hacking up a forgeworld bloodthirster is not something my wallet could stand. I am thinking of altering a Lord of the Rings Balrog. He is about the right scale, and plastic as an added bonus. Outside an officail GW store do you think this would work well?

I'm not sure if there are any rules against doing this in an official GW store either. I played with a Deamon Prince of Nurgle that was converted from a LotR Troll, and no one thought it wrong.
I'm not sure if the Balrog is actually as large as the Blood Thirster mini though. I honestly think that if you do a little more to convert him on top of the lost wings (if you alter the face, and add some armor) he will look perfect.
The more you change, the less he will look like a Balrog minus the wings, and the more he will look like your own conversion of Scarbrand.

since LotR is still a GW game and thus uses citadel minis, you wouldn't have a problem. Though I think that using something simple like a wingless bloodthirster would be fine because that is literally what skarbrand is. He was goaded into attacking khorne, who then smacked him so hard he fell for days (don't remember how long) and upon impact his wings disentigrated. It could actually be fun to greenstuff wing stubs that look like they've been blasted off, think dogma.

I've got a Balthirster on the workbench for my 40k demons. I too like Scarbrand myself, and I think if / when I use him - hatred for everyone - I'd probably use the legit BT with no wings and just make sure he had a demonic looking axe in both hands, to follow his rules / fluff.

I was thinking Belakor as a base, since he kinda looks like the new bloodletters. Plus I hate (x2) the bloodthirster model.

Kinda. Gandalf and Balrog kept falling AND fighting at the same time until they hit something and in some wierd way they found themselfes on top of Caradhras or something. And then Gwaihir or something took him away. While Scarabrand attacked Khorne and fell for a few days and didn't do anything.
EDIT: I think.

Someone on Bell of Lost Souls did an excellent conversion (in my opinion) from an existing bloodthirster and a minotaur head.

GW has relaxed alot in the last year or two but some things never change so you really need to check with the stores and events you will be playing in as to if they will allot it or not.
When the LOTR stuff first released I was talking to my rep about converting the Balrog and he told me that part of the reason that they were done in such a different scale was so that you could NOT use them in Fantasy or 40K and this was done on purpose as part of the licencing agreement with the Tolkin group. He spacifically told me that the balrog and other such models from the LOTR line would NOT be permitted in any GW sanctioned events up to and including any GW prize supported events that I ran in my store.
Now Like I said they have become the a "kinder gentler GW " over the last few years so this may have changed and there will alwasy be guys who say screw it use what you want. Just do your self the favore and check ahead of time for any events. In friendly games knock your self out.

I'm actually working on a conversion that uses parts from a Shaggoth, a discontinued Carnifex model and a good amount of green stuff work. It should be interesting. If I ever get it done, I might put it up here as my first modeling post. As for the Balrog, GW used to be incredibly strict with using LOTR models in GW events. They weren't doing the bits orders of pieces for a long time because they didn't want the parts readily available for conversion use. I'm not sure if the time frame is up on the licensing agreement yet but it's definitely worth looking into before you invest in something you plan on running in tournaments.

EDIT: I think.
Almost, not quite. They fell while fighting, landed in water, then Gandalf followed the(now extinguished and soggy) Balrog up several stairs to the top of the mountain and out, whereupon the Balrog fell dead and Gandalf collapsed.
