Off the shoulder of Orion

A few years ago my local model store gave me a B-29 Superfortress kit that had a number of bits missing and two left wings (yeah). It sat in my garage for a while, and then I read one of the Black Library books that gave me a little inspiration. I think it was called Battle for Armageddon, and it featured a huge Ork bomber. An idea was born, but like so many of my modelling ideas, that was as far as it got.

Recently I got to play my first game of Apocalypse (The bat rep can be found here: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/212789.page) - this seemed like the perfect opportunity for a new war machine and a good motivation to finally do something with the kit. So, a project was born...

The first thing that struck me was the sheer size of the thing - the wingspan was around 65cms. This was going to need a lot of paint..

I used Ork parts from my bits box and lots of plasticard to build up the weapons and structure, plus a good dose of the dremel saw to cut up wings and the fuselage for the more "Orky" look. I wanted lots of shooty guns, so the turrets became twin linked big shootas and a Zzap gun with extra capacitors (counts as twin linked)

I had to completely rebuild the nose section - I can't decide which was the worst part, all that plasticard, putty,sanding and cutting, or trying to build up the canopy..

Then came glyph plates, hard points for the weapons (so I could change the bomb load-out) and lots and lots of armour plates

What caught me out about this project was the size of the beast - everything took so much longer to do than I anticipated - just the base coat spray took two hours and two pots of paint:

It wasn't quite finished for the battle (in the battle rep photos it is missing the dag checks and weathering) but here is the completed machine - as with all my Ork kit-bashes, I go for the Mad Max look but without too much of the OTT look:

The Mega Bomber

Waist Gunners with Big Shootas

One of the upper turrets and the power field generator

Mek Pilot with bomb release

The Ork in the doorway gives you an idea of the scale of the thing

Underbelly and bomb bays

Tail end Charlie

Gubbins

Flak damage showing the wing interior

It performed reasonably well in the apoc game. I costed it at 700 points with 3 twin linked big shootas (turrets), 3 big shootas (waist gunners and tail gun), the Zzap gun, 12 bombs and two mega bombs (same effect as a Deth Kannon shell). It killed a lot of infantry, but with scatter the big bombs failed to do much to vehicles (just some shaken and immobilised results). So not overly powerful which is good.

Project costs:

Model = free
Bitz = free
Plasticard = $15
Paint = $10
BIG paintbrush for the drybrushing = $15
The shock and awe when this gets plonked on the table = priceless

Now I just need to work out where I'm going to store the damn thing..

Comments etc welcome as always.

All I've got to say is...

...wow.

OK, I can say a bit more!

Any chance you could model some Grot bombs on the way out of those bomb bay doors?

Anyway, truly awesome model!

That looks REALY GOOD!! Almost too professional for Orks, no boat oars for propellars, no mixed-matched engines. (like a car V8 poking through 1 of the cowling's) Sorry I'm not picking on you. But I also like the comic relief themed Orks. Your B-29 realy looks like it means business. I wish my little sister didn't trash mine when I was 12.

It's very nice, but it feels like it needs some more Orkification. Grots hanging from the wings and such.

It looks really sweet, but it doesn't look very Orky to me. The lines are too smooth, especially in the wings and tail and nose. The propellers are all uniform. There's no Ork dangling a Grot out one of the openings by his foot.

Thanks for the comments - as mentioned, I didn't want to go overboard on the "ramshackle" look - more of a looted vehilce feel. I find some Ork vehicles just look overwrought and impractical (the Skullhamma in the Apoc book being a good example).

Still, beauty (or in this case, Orky) is in the eye of the beholder, so I appreciate some will want propellors that are made of mis-matched parts (they are actually covered in bolts and patched up plating) and lots of grots hanging out.

Alpharius - When I get time I will model a few grot bombs, including a large one with a grot riding it a la Dr Strangelove.

Lord L - it's the Monogram 1/48th version

Foda - yeah, I think we are on the same wavelength...

I imagine if the rest of your Orks are mad-max esque such as this it would look beautiful on the table next to your army. Of course thats not to say your model isn't great, because lets get down to it - it's great, especially given what you are trying to go for.

It was kind of hard for me to see all that armor plating in the images of the entire plane, but the closer ups give a nice view. It has just enough qualities to be Orky IMO without being over the top Orky.

Just curious, but do you use the existing Ork Vehicles from GW such as the Trukk or various Trakks? They're all a bit silly - or do you heavily convert them?

The new Trukk is practically my favorite model because it reminded me of a Technical (a pickup truck with a gun, essentially) and I thought it was a little Mad-Maxy. Plus I liked the idea of Orks riding around in Trukks shooting stuff, then I read GW even made a game about it (Gorka Morka).

Anyway, GREAT WORK!

EDIT: This is giving me ideas for Ork Fighta-Bombas. I'd love to build a pair of Fighta-Bombas using some real world aircraft like you have used. I'm definitely thinking about an aircrat like A-1 Skyraider (Vietnam Era) or maybe even the A-10 would be cool. Hell the A-10 is practically Orky all ready. It has a buttload of armor and is designed around one big shoota, the 30mm gatling.

Gork (or mork) has blessed you. This is a really nice model. I like that it isn't too pieced together because as stupid as orks are portrayed their gear still has to work.

Geat job. (I do agree about adding some grot bombs though, if for no other reason than to add character)

I'm not saying you should go crazy with it, but like a squirrel with a bazooka, just one little grot hanging for dear life with a wrench on the wing would not take it to far over, but also give it just a hint of that Orkiness.

Gorka Morka was a blast.

Beautiful work.

Personally I would have gone more OTT but I definitly would field this with my orks.

As you have gone the more restrained look for me it looks too 'one tone' with all the extra metal sheets almost lost as they are the same colour as the fuselage. Have you thought of repainting some different colours to show them up more/show the scavaging nature of the orks?

Nice detail work but the over-all design needs some work. To chime in with the chrous it looks like a regular scaled down B-29 with some Ork heads glued on. Rebuild the wings, over charge the engines, build up the hull so that the Orks can stick bigger bombs in it. To suggest that going over the top is a bad thing as it is too impractical would be to go against what is Orky. Their technology is not based off of working mechanics but the BELIEF that they work. Otherwise, once again, the details look great!

Everyone has a different idea about Ork aircraft. Although mine is different than yours this Bomba is very well done. I like mine (if I ever get to building it!) more angular, bulkier and unrecognisable as a real aircraft.
But kudos to you for actually building one fine Bomba!

In the old fluff, Ork gear only worked because they believed it did. They were/are actually the most powerful psykers, they just don't know it or know how to harness it at will.

This is phenomenal work, good job OP. We all have our own visions of what Ork aircraft should look like, but this is superb work nonetheless. As for CC, I would say use the Dethkopta rotors for the engines and maybe put some extra armor plates or rivets on there, but this is great work regardless.

I love that old piece of fluff, you never hear it now.

Its a wonderfully characterful snippet of background that explains everything.

Well, this has certainly created some debate! Good to see that the Ork fluff around believing their gear worked, so it does, is still alive. I've tried to represent that with the two right-hand wings the bomber has (you can see the inverted engines on the left wing, as it is upside down) - of course, such an aircraft could never fly, but with Orks....

Lagduf - yeah, most of my Ork vehicles are conversions or Kit bashes - such as the battlewagons and buggy below:

(sorry for the threadcromancy)

I like your idea with the A-10 - that is a very Orky plane

Gonads - there are a few coloured panels as you suggest - although not many as I didn't want it to look too much like a patch-work quilt:

As you will see from the battlewagon and buggy pics above, I quite like the raw metal look - it looks brutal and crude as I imagine Orks to be. Not everyone's cup of tea though

And never let it be said I don't listen to the will of the people...(well, a little)
Grot Bomb - I'll post the finished pic with the Grot riding it soon

I really liked the B-29 (And the rest of the models). I hate to chime in, but I think a few more Orky details wouldn't have hurt. Of course, this thing actually looks like it could fly, which is a feat for orks. One thing to consider: adding support wires to the wings/antennaee like the Hellcat had. All in all it's a great peace of work.

I actually love the model. I do have one suggestion if you plan on making another one (mind you, I love this one)...it even goes along with a "madmax" theme.

My suggestion is in regards to the waste gunners. If possible, maybe you can build a harness for them to literally hang out of the plane with there guns...kind of like in the opening scene of Riddick...

It may be too tough to pull off, but when I was looking at it, the only improvement I could have possibly imagined was this...

Great Model! I also loved reading the battle report!
