I need help. I can't figure out how to get this paint scheme much less apply it without it looking like a twitching squig bomb gone through the warp with paint bottles attached.
I want to do the one on the far right but I'm getting
this on my test models.
I have a multitude of paints both GW and old citadel and vallejo.
but I'm lost. Can any of the painting gurus here get me started down the right path without having to resort to horrendous amounts of cash just to have someone else do it for me?
I want to do this myself.

There's about 5 highlights on the highlights on that model.
You appear to have one?
You might try doing all of the small bitz work first, including the tabard...and then do the highlights on the armor areas to get that effect.

To get that effect (or somethign similar with dark recesses and light highlights) try this on a test model:
Paint the whole model sky blue (or whatever flavor your paint set calls sky blue).
Wash the models in blue ink. Paint the whole model, it will be pretty dark, but still have some variation.
Drybrush once with the same sky blue color.
Drybrush again lightly with a mix of sky blue and white.
When I say drybrush I don't even mean the skilled version. Just take an old brush, dip it slightly in paint and then brush most of the paint off. Then just sweep it back and forth over the model's surfaces. Takes like 10 seconds and looks spiffy keen.
Thats the base color anyway.

Drybrushing on smooth surfaces will have that 'fuzzy' look, it's much better (and more time consuming) to thinly paint watered-down highlights. It'll take some practice, but once you learn it'll look great. As for detailing first, NO!!! Do the biggest surfaces first, if you accidentaly paint over a tiny detail that took you ages whilst liberally splashing a base colour for the armour on you'll regret it! FWIW, I've always found it tricky to blend blues, I don't know why, so I feel your pain!

What are you going to do with that Cultist model when you're done? Can I have it?

to add to this, don't be afraid to take a very thin (more water than ink.. 5-1 or even 7-1) to ink over the final dry brush, this will allow the colors to blend more naturally.
There's about 5 highlights on the highlights on that model.
yep 5 highlights is as good a guess as 7 highlights or 8 highlights. Not sure where you pulled that number from, or what you determined it by. When I have done models similar to this, with washes and blends, I am looking at 13 or more levels of highlights, and to be honest, for the level of the OP, that's too many to discuss.
