I've decided to have a play with using rare earth magnets on my new Hive Tyrant.

Does anyone have any advice on what sizes I should be looking for, and where a good place to get some in the UK might be (thinking website, rather than shop). I've found one place that sells 3x1mm magnets, here:

http://www.discountmagic.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=411

Are they about the right size? that seems a bit thin to me. perhaps 3x2 would be better.

TIA for the help.

I'd go with something a bit thicker than 1 mm. NdFeB are pretty brittle and a thicker magnet will be less likely to break. 3x2 sounds about right.

Ok, for reference I just found a pretty good site, after some creative googling involving the words "Neobdynium, miniatures and rare earth magnets"

Let the magnet-fun commence.

I've been using 0.5mm thick magnets with quite a lot of success... They might be brittle but you shouldn't really be doing anything with them that might make them break.

I found that you have to work to recess the thicker magnets while you can easily surface mount the 0.5mm jobs.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

Where are you sourcing those 0.5mm ones from Flinty? I've found a few more magnet sites but none of them seem to offer ones that thin.

I got mine a while ago from here.

I got a selection of different sizes and shapes but the ones I've used the most for my Tau Battlesuits were the 3x3x0.5mm magnets. They surface mount snugly both to the 'suit and to the weapon. Means you don't need to chovel out a big hole that looks rubbish when there is nothing on the mounting.

Happy magnetizing!

Cool, I've ordered a few of a number of sizes, we'll see what's best. I think that in the case of my Tyrant and Fexes the 2mm x 1mm round ones will be best due to arm sockets and the like, but we'll see.

It's also going to depend a bit on what you're magnetizing Fitzeh. Tau parts are all plastic. The long arms of TMC I found when I magnetized them will droop slightly. The lash whip and bonesword arms would probably need a thicker magnet to hold in place. The venom cannons and barbed stranglers would only hold in place when I used magnets for both holes. You can take a look at some pics at the link below (and I can take some better ones for you if needed, I have a better camera now)

Well I think the first efforts will be a couple of plastic 'fexes. I stupidly stuck the first two together as Dakkafexes, nothing wrong with them per-se but they are now doomed forever to be dakkafexes. The other two I'll "experiment" on !! - The fexes will probably do fine with the small magnets. (2x1mm)

Once I've got the hang of it I want to do a Flyrant, I'm guessing that this bad boy will need a few more teslas to hold him together.
