yeah...

So whats the thoughts on a 100pts DCCWx2 dread

in 5ed it can run towards the enemy.
and on a it'll have fleet to boot.

7-12" of movement normally and on a the possibility of 7-12-18" assault

yes on a it'll stand around firing it's bolters at who ever is closest...
this will hopefully be the at enemy anyways... since you've been running to get into a fight with them!
(but this is a crazy chaos war machine!)

you could deal with 1... but what about 3 of them?
Could they be ignored?

With the way the vehicle dmg chart is now, plus running, a CC dread definitely isn't completely useless. 3 of them would really get someones attention. Fast mechanized armies (Eldar/Dark Eldar), you'd have a problem with since you wouldn't be able to catch the vehicles.

I read your battle report so since you have 3 dreads, go for it and try it. Use cover and smoke launchers to your advantage, as well as each dread giving cover to the ones behind it.

I've been running one for about 6 games now, and he hasn't made it to combat yet. Granted, he tends to go fire frenzy on the turn when he'd be able to charge, and he does draw a lot of fire (a lot of which bounces off), and he hasn't actually been destroyed in most of those games. Usually what happens is that he gets immobilized, then stands there helplessly for the rest of the game. So if you're counting on a 2ccw dread for antitank or something like that, it's not a good choice.

Based on my experience, I'd prefer the multimelta + CCW dread, which I've also been trying out. The cost is the same IIRC, but the MM dread is still a threat when immobilized (or when fire frenzying). The loss of the one attack isn't really a big deal since you rarely make it all the way to HtH.

I think the really strong chaos walker army would have a mix of dreads (with guns and CCW) and dual-CCW defilers. Imagine that running at you.

yeah...
I had one in my last game, he ran straight for the enemy and i think made a big target of itself, he soaked up lots of Anti tank fire till he was imobilised, then he was ignored... but this ment my other tanks and dreads weren't fired at all! then he sat in the middle firing his bolters for a few turns till he was blown up.

that's why i'm thinking you need a couple of them. cheap at 100pts too!

while I understand the one less attack to have a ranged weapon, I don't know if i'd have a dread with a weapon run if he had the option of firing at something?
these dreads are made for running!

Well the multimelta you really only want to shoot it when you're within 12" of the target anyway. So if you're within 12" but more than 6" away--when running wouldn't do you any good because you can't assault--that's when you shoot the multimelta. When you're more than 18" away from your target at the shooting phase, then run definitely.

Or, like I say, when you're immobilized. A vehicle-heavy opponent really can't afford to ignore a melta weapon with that kind of fire radius parked in the middle of the field.

Remember, if the enemy is the closest target, and the Dreadnought fire frenzies, you get twice the firepower!

If you're afraid of a little friendly fire, then arm your Dreadnought with a Heavy Flamethrower: its easier to keep your stuff out of range, while giving you something handy to winkle infantry out of cover.

Cyper used 3 venerable dreads in an RTT last Saturday in his DA list. In 3 games, I think he lost one. I tried to kill them but managed to only take a weapon off 2 of them and shake the heck out the other one.

You generally don't want to be counting on a 100 point, single hit unit for anything, it isn't what they're for. What you want is a unit that might pay off, and just occassionally pay off brilliantly, and figuring that when it doesn't pay off it's probably absorbed a fair bit of fire and was only 100 points.

It's a unit that might be nice to have if you've already got your core army sorted.

yeah...
Agreed. I'm thinking running:
for 200pts 2 CCDreads they Will soak up even more enemy fire and if one gets into combat with a enemy squad it will stand a good chance of earning both dreads points back by the end of the combat...

I'm not too worried about it going mental turn 1 and firing two bolters at my squads. i'd be more worries about it if it was armed with a lascanon and happened to be closest to one of my tanks or another dread.

also If i Run them together along the field then when one fire frenzys, bolter fire wont be able to penetrate the other dread:
  • I can turn the second dread at the end of it's movement so that its side or front facing armour faces the firefrenzy dread
  • .
  • during the shooting phase fire the fire frenzy dreasd guns to no effect

  • turn the second dread back towards the enemy to fires it's bolters or run some more it's amour now facing enemy heavys...

I've been testing out CSM dread configurations really. I might have just been lucky but I find an missile launcher paired with a heavy bolter does wonders. Get two, stick them side by side. If they fire frenzy in the first few turns they ineffectively shoot one another. If they berserk they run toward the enemy. It really isn't that good against other vehicles though, I face many more hordes around here though.

Once upon a time, I told myself it's better to be smart than lucky. Every day, the world proves me wrong a little more.

I've been trying out a missile launcher/DCCW dread (some times with a heavy flamer). It works well with either another dread in the same configuration or with 2xDCCW. The two of them pretty much hold a flank and gives the opponent something to worry about and with the ML(frag) you don't have to worry about the 2 dreads killing each other.

For ~200 pts. it can't be beat on the other hand I think I've gotten 1 frenzy roll in the last 3 games I've played so maybe my dreads are just extraordinarily well behaved.

I run three with my Khorne army "The Legion of Brass" and (when they don't Fire Frenzy) they do pretty well. They draw a lot of fire and can take on most anything in combat, when supported by my Berzerkers. When they do FF though it isn't fun to shoot 8 re-rolled shots into my Zerkers. I basically built this list before the latest CSM codex (UGH) and still working with it for 5th ed. the Run bonus makes them a lot better (making up somewhat for the loss of Blood Rage) but they still have some kinks to work out.

I must be psychic because I modeled mine running, before there was running!

You can only "pivot in place" if you didn't move in the movement phase (unless those sneaky 5th rules changed that).

A timely thread since I have been thinking about the same question in view of 5th. I like dreads but not the new codex rules.

I thought about running all-CCW dreads but the possibility of them waiving their CCW's in frustration after being immobilized kind of killed that idea.

I do like the idea of running a pair close together and trying to minimize the fire-frenzy issue by having them take weapons that are unlikely to do themselves damage until they get close enough to the enemy. Has anyone tried this with a HB/CCW load out? I have other options to deal with vehicles and this might be a way to thin out the other side's scoring units.

I originally really wanted to run 3 CCW dreads, but now I am beginning to think giving them a weapon of some kind of a better idea. A plasma cannon is cheap and seems like a good option, but I am still thinking. Awesome Dreadnought picture by the way.

    yeah...
I played CC dreads in my recent games and they performed fairly well... but more testing is required.

stunned is a pisser for a ranged dread but it don't matter to a CC Dread
    Shaken is a issue... annoying.
but yeah getting immobilised is a real problem with CC dreads. sux... lots.

when you fire frenzy you can chose to rapid fire or not...
so two LT bolters fired twice = 4 shots if your own troops are close or rapid fire 8 bolter shots if it's the enemy...
    all rerolled...

to be honest though in the last 3 games I've played i've run a total of 6 dreads and not fire frenzyed once!
    good luck i guess.

I'm thinking at 100pts I think they will always have a place in my army Lists!

Is that meant to be Shaken doesn't bother CC Dreads? Because I know when I run them for CC, stunned is much worse than shaken

Chaos Dreads suck. No getting around it. No making them better.

Even a maximum dread/defiler army is questionable because of the uncontrollability of the dread and the weak armor of both units (immobile=dead).

    [/qoute]

I don't see anything in the rules that says double tapping within 12" is optional. You must fire for full effect from the way it reads (at least in 4th it was, not totally pos for 5th).

    yeah,
It just says that you fire all weapons twice at the closest target. nothing about weapon fire modes or ammo type.
i'd say you get to make all other choices.
for example with a missile launcher i'd chose frag if the closest target is my tank and krak if the closest unit is a enemy tank.
if the closest target unit is a friendly squad 18" away i'd declare that my dreadnought is rapid firing his bolters... it's just a shame that it's outta range huh?

It's just making the best of a bad situation...

But Rapid Fire says you fire two shots to targets within 12" it's not listed as optional. You either fire a weapon to full effect, or you don't fire (which FF makes not an option).

The ML could definitely fire a Frag since its a choice though.
