Subject: Flyers In 40K and Apocalypse - Are they worth it?

Are flyers really worth it play value wise.....not points, or model cost. Bristling with weapons and very light armor, getting attacks when and where you need them. I'm just looking to Dakka to cut it up and figure out the numbers and fill in the gaps I may not have seen. I'm doing a very fast jetbike based Eldar and I feel it fits "fluff" wise but the lightest use Heavy Support slots, or Super-Heavys. Other then the 4+ Save Eldar get....most imput will also help all other races with flyers.
If this post is in the wrong area please move it.
Thanks for your time, help and imput.

Don't let the armour fool you, Flyers can take a lot to kill because you need 6's to kill them. They die very quickly to AA weapons though, as obvious as that sounds. Eldar ones are even better with their 4+ saves.
Look over the stats of the various Flyers. Some of them are not good at attacking ground targets, as they lack guns. The main Eldar fight is like this as it has two forward pointing Bright Lances and ShuriCannons and that's it, the Lightning has similar problems. There are other ones made for ground attack runs, like the other Eldar one (the one that looks like the Batwing) and the Thunderbolt, and they can have an impact on the game.
Just stay out of range of units that have loads of bolters, and you'll be fine.

Also hope your opponent doesnt take the anti-flyer asset in APOC and make your rather expensive flyer useless.

The anti flyer option only works for one turn, and even then it isnt a definite kill, (if you're feeling lucky enough to brave it) I myself have a flyer, and hope to get more. The Eldar ones are particuarly good, with their 18'' min movement and good weapons.

Malfred: Terminator Armor has always had room for extra boobage.
Drake_Marcus: It's true- that's why the Space Wolves love termie armour so much. The whole "bear" thing they've got going on is just a thinly veiled cover-up of their huge, hairy cleavage. |

Flyers have tended to dominate the monthly Apoc games in Baton Rouge(the only time someone brought near enough AA, no one brought flyers). It's lead to an upscaling of people building flyers(mostly the Orks) or purchasing Pintle-mounted weapons on vehicles. Any flyers with bombs and plenty of anti-infantry fire power is generally the way to go.

Do flyers retain the glancing hit rule or do they get the new 4+ cover save?

I don't have Apoc: Reloaded yet (with it's suggested updates section), but if the shift is to a 4+ save, that kind of screws the Eldar (who PAID for that). Maybe Eldar should get a re-roll...

Infinity: Way, way better than 40K and more affordable to boot!

Side note: as an owner of both a Nightwing and two Thunderbolts (both scratchbuilt), I would say that the Thunderbolts are way better simply because they can take extra missiles. As a first-strike weapon they will kick ass against anything, have a decent second strike, and then be gravy for any longer survival. Since they can't claim objectives, play them kamikaze and draw as much fire as possible.
Back on-topic, at a bit of thought, it seems all AV10 fliers would be screwed by the change in SMF rules, away from glances to simple saves. Can someone good at math tell me if this perception is correct, or if things balance out numerically?
At least most AA guns will be glacing 2/3rds or less of the time anyways. Hydras have certainly gotten more powerful, though. As it should be, I guess... I just wish Eldar AA packed more of a punch too.
