Another week in the LGS tournament scene has passed and thus its time to bring all of you yet another battle report! You can see the past two reports here on 40k Radio's forum or on Dakka Dakka's forums.

I will preface this with a warning:

The game was... not as exciting as other games I have played. In fact it was quite miserable for me. During the entire game the store owner was bugging both me and my opponent about rules, which he was generally wrong with, and just strait out confusing my opponent. Thus during I was not compelled to take pictures, as you will see it was for a lack of a better word a slaughter and nearly pointless after the second turn.

Tau Army
*I refuse to figure it out. Do NOT emulate this guy*

Deployment
In typical Tau fashion when we went out to get terrain he came back with buildings, as you will see, and I came back with random stuff that was left over after everyone used up all the other terrain. I won placement of the first terrain piece so I took the larger of the two buildings and stuck it right in the middle. I figured that that would make the building near useless for him and I could use it to block LOS. Atypical Tau player took the other building and stuck it in the far corner, as for the rest of the terrain it was placed rather evenly around the rest of the board as to fill up the rest of the space. The damage was done.

As I don't have a before placement shot this is the best one I can provide for how the terrain was:

Tyranid:
As you can see, the building in the center blocked LOS on things and if you couldn't tell already I won first turn and took it as well as the side that he had placed the building on. As for actual deployment I basically screened my warriors with my Gaunts, stuck a squad of Genestealers as close as possible in hopes that they would be bait, put the Scything HT as bait and as close as possible to absorb some firepower and get into contact with what would hopefully be a close tank, and the Carnifex sort of out of sight (mind you not out of LOS but kinda in the back so less thought was payed to it.

Tau:
I don't think it was intentional, in fact I know it wasn't, but I think the placement of the Tau was probably one of the worst ideas ever. Fully knowing that I had a squad of Genestealers with Scuttlers (thus having the scout rule) he placed a squad of Firewarriors right on the edge of the possible deployment zone. As well as most of his units also being as close as possible. There were the broadsides in the back, sniper drones off to the side and tanks also to the side, however they were all still almost as close as humanly or xenosly(??) possible.

Scout moves:

So what would you do if you had a scout move with a tank that was near a flying Hive Tyrant with Scything Talons? I would suggest you move away but hell if you want to move closer Mr. Tau feel free I'll take the free first turn assault. Oh and did I mention the Fire warriors being really close to the Genestealers that had a scout movement? I will give him his best move of the game Infiltrating Kroot right behind me in that building that I stole from him.

Turn One
So this was the beginning of the end right here. During the shooting phase I wounded some of the Firewarriors across from the Carnifex with the Barbed Strangler and he failed a pinning test. Thus one squad of Firewarriors was useless. The Warriors mowed down some of the Kroot in the building behind them sadly I didn't kill them all as that would have made the game end far sooner. The Dakka Tyrant also did some damage to the previously mentioned Firewarriors knocking them down a bit as well. I used Run to move the Gaunts and then proceeded to enter Assualt.

Remember those two REALLY bad things I said the Tau player did? Yea, Assault first turn with a Devilfish and with a squad of Firewarriors. Now the Devilfish had Scouted 12" thus I needed Sixes to hit it lucky for me I managed to stun the thing with my Flying HT. As for those Genestealers, they assaulted the Firewarriors. Best part is, I only scored One... ONE wound on them. But, I saved the two wounds that they got on me and won combat. Now apparently Tau can't make a LD test to save their lives... literally and they failed and then failed their sweeping advance check. So once again. ONE wound from Genestealers on a 12 man squad of Firewarriors = 12 Firewarriors off the table.

The Tau players turn was... unimpressive I think he got a wound or two on the Flying Tyrant. Oh and during his movement he deployed the squad from in the Devilfish, I think Pathfinders, and instead of moving to the Genestealers to shoot them up with Rapidfire he moved away and was stuck shooting at the Hive Tyrant. That's all folks.

Turn Two. And Beyond!

So as to save myself the grief of reliving this game in full detail I will recall the events of the rest of the game in a quick manner. However I will let you see why the game ended on turn two.

Reserves:
Two Squads of Genestealers and my Lictor came out.

Lictor can sorta be seen here in the corner of the building.

Now as I said the game got sad fast and I was uninterested in taking pictures so that's all I have. But suffice to say its easy to see how it turned out. Turn two I had 90% of his units in assault and in turn I killed almost everything. On turn three all he had was his Kroot but they survived long enough for his Commander to get in and put up a little fight before getting killed as well. He had another squad of broadsides deep strike over by one of the objectives that I was holding but they didn't kill anything and I won the game with an Objective in I think the 6th turn.

Long story short after the game I ran out of the store and went home as it was probably the least fun I have had playing a game of 40k.

Week 6 was a Win though it was not fun. So far... 5-1-0 Win-Tie-Loss. If you have been following along then you would know that I have been tied with another guy in the tournament for the entire time and our only tie is to each other. He didn't make it to this past Sundays game and I'm friends with the guy that he is playing his makeup game with. So as of now I have no Idea if were still tied or if I'm in the lead now....
Go Dan!!! Push me ahead!:-P

I suggest you bribe the store owner. He shuts up and leaves you alone if you give him more terrain.

That table is empty.

Or...how about atleast assembling all the models first if you are going to take pictures of the Batrep.

Well if I happened to be the Tau player, MAYBE, I would have something to do with that. But ya know you could not read and just comment on random stuff if you want! That's cool too!

As for the Terrain were only allowed 3 Pieces each and I've been getting flack for putting up larger peices myself because I would get more cover with it I guess and people don't want that.

Just to clarify I posted the following on 40k Online in response to the question of "Why was the game so bad? What was wrong? ETC"

Yea sorry I was tired as hell and doing the BatRep just cause. Basically the problem I had with the game was that from the begining the Store owner was standing next to us and basically bugging both of us with rules, our movement choices, out shooting, etc. Basically anything he saw he was putting his input on saying we should do it another way. Mind you he likes to bust on people but he was going over the top that day with it. Then my opponent was pulling poor moves that I could tell, and I don't even know Tau that well, quite often. On top of taking longer than most slow Ork players would to set up or move, no offence:-P I take a while too if im playing swarm, and it didn't help that he was half following everyones orders. I say everyone because by second turn the people who weren't playing during that round had walked over to comment as well and everyone kept giving both of us suggestions. I just ignore them generally and go about my game since It's my game but the poor kid I was playing got all confused and just did seeming random things. At the end the store owner was basically suggesting me to do anything that would be stupid and in the Tau players favor and trying to coach the Tau player in to a better position.

Long story short. The whole situation was annoying and I just wanted to enjoy my game with this kid. All the extra crap just made the game horrible for both of us. After the game was over him and I talked and basically said we would like to play a game together without all the crap going on where there was no pressure just for fun, since that game wasn't. I'll admit I'm glad I won but I play for fun too and I would like to have some.

Allowed? What is there, a rationing system?

Explain this concept to me please.

Well there's 5 or 6 tables going and my LGS is small and doesn't have a crazy amount of terrain to split between up to 6 4x6 tables. Thus he limits people to 3 pieces per person in each game during the tournament. Though I will say that generally means there's little terrain and terrain placement is all that much more strategic.

It takes absolutely minimal effort to create some decent terrain and overall the game is much more fun with a more dynamic board. Otherwise it's always felt like pushing chess pieces around a map to me.

I'm sure there's dozens of ideas around the boards for mass producing cheap, cool terrain. Stuff as simple as spray painting toilet paper tubes silver, wrapping them in a chain, and calling it a stack of industrial pipes.

"Terrain rationing" sounds like just one more of those irritating things that puts more pressure on the game...and makes it less fun. Then people quit, your player pool shrinks, and before you know it 40k becomes that thing your store "used to do".

If you go to the slight amount of effort required to make some pretty cool, themed terrain that you can carry around in a bin along with all your other stuff, you have the added bonus of becoming "the guy" that people want to share tables with because your games just look cool.

Sorry to hear about the lack of fun. It sounds like you're trying to run a very competitive list against people who are much more laissez faire or inexperienced. Good luck in the future.

Yeah,
It sux to play a boring game,
but you played tau and got a win on a empty table! that's got to count for something?

to be fair on him and the building in the corner thing though Gun line people want hills or buildings in deployment zones...it's a fact and i think if we're honest about it we all do similar to varing degrees when setting up a table, right?

as stated above That store needs to sort it's terrain out, they should get all players to sacrifice one game night and make it a terrain night...maybe...

There are a few really good players but I've only gotten to play against a few of them during this tournament.
