Well from this far away, the purple looks ace.

That said, get some closer pix! Especially of that Fex-winged thing.

As much as I like your colour choice and your painting skills, I think it needs another colour in there just to break up the black/dark grey.

I agree, I think a third colour in there would do great. Maybe some yellow for things like the eyes and any other gribbly bits like those funny vents on the arms. The teeth should be bone too, to draw attention to the face.

I was thinking of adding a third color - green I think - lime green to contrast with the purple. I have a ton of bugs to paint though and want to get them on the table quickly. Ill go back after and add the third color.

The wings are from a Dark Elf fantasy flying mount - I dont recall the name of the model though - I bit ordered them.

Two questions. Im re-thinking the green option for a regal blue/lightning blue. I was thinking to target the softer parts of the chitin on the the bugs - forearms mainly and the wing membranes. Would adding lime green there be too much?

Which parts of the bugs get the second color highlight?

San Diego.

How about painting all the scythes/claws/vents a bleach bone/white. The lighter color would pop against those dark colors.

looks good but you do need a third color to add

I agree they need a 3rd color. I wanted to leave the claws solid black as it looks like a tough enamel (at least it does to me).

I was thinking of a regal blue with lightning blue/ghost white highlights on the soft parts like the barbed strangler ammo sack, forearms, wings etc.

The bases with be edged in black, brown earth and green static grass. Unless someone has a better idea for base colors of course. Id like the basing to compliment the bugs color scheme.

Go with a bone white or khaki and use it on the boney portrusions like teeth, finger nails, and those big vents on the back of the carnifexes.

Green is a sharp contrast and a dark blue would be a soft complimentary, I dont think either would look good. You need a soft contrast, something along the lines of an earth tone.

*shrug* just my opinion.

I do think that the light blue/regal blue would be a nice contrast. Keep up the great work and I cant wait to see more progress on them. Would you paint the wings the same blue shades or what are your plans for them?

The top ridge of scales on the wings will be purple like you see. The wing membranes will be painted the 3rd color whatever it turns out to be - Im leaning to the blue color as I want to the 3rd color to not take away from the purple - I want purple to be the dominating color. Think Purple People Eaters - nah, please dont. LOL

Man, that double-winged arrangement looks cool. Starting with something like that, you really can't go wrong.

Well have you ever seen the game Aliens Vs. Predator: Extinction? In there the Alien Warriors had faint green streaks with blue around them. I thought It looked kinda cool. here's a good reference as to what I'm talking about, the green is very subtle but is still detectable.

I appreciate the encouragement - posting initial progress is a great way to maintain painting momentum!

Ive decided to go with a midnight blue/enchanted blue with a ghostly grey highlight.

Ill post continued progress. THe painting technique allows for fast mass production of the little bugs. Ill focus on the more time consuming big bugs so I can field a Nidzilla army fast.

For the large plates, I'd suggest a white edge that bleeds or winds into the purple. Kind of an "E" shaped pattern. It would help to better define the models, and also give some strong visual contrast.

For the claws, go with the grey as you suggested.

And then wash the thing!

Kaiservonhugal - In answer to your question from another thread.

The blue I used on my dire Avengers was an Ultramarine basecoat, follwed by a regal blue wash. Ultramarine on the raised areas followed by an ice blue extreme highlight.

Looks great. I would as has been suggested add a third color. Also don't forget to black line. Give definition between the plates. It will help make all of your work stand out even more. Use either watered down chaos black, or the black ink, or a black wash. But fine black lining can really make your painting work *POP*. Keep up the great work, ..... looks great. Please post when you get the third color added.

London (work) / Pompey (live, from time to time)

when painting nids i tend to break them down into colour sections.

carapace
skin
fleshy bits
talons, claws, teeth

doing that you get a nie crisp and clar colour scheme.
try blending in another colour on the skin to break it up a bit, and, might be an iea to paint the talons to give them a little colur, if going with a blue or green ish skin tone then just paint the talons with watered down black and nk thm, gives them a nice tint when the ligt hits it.

Phase 2

Ill be cleaning them up a bit and black lining things I missed but here's where Im at now.

For a contrast - I think Ill add crystals to the base - similar to what you see in Necrons armies, painted necron green.
