The jury is out on the swirly hills??? I'm just not sure what to make of them????

I really like the idea of city gardens, very la di da top of the hive!
Yours look a little "clean" next to your ruined buildings. Craters, snapped tree trunks would be nice.

Not sure how hard wearing the flock directly on paint/pva will be??? i'd be tempted to let the paint dry, then use watered pva glue with flock.

Good work!!!!

yeah,
I don't know why I did the forest bases swirly, it was a artistic whim I guess, it would have made more sense to make the woods matching my hills and my armys bases...
meh... I think they are fun. and if i make more stuff I can do another scheme, and not feel like I'm trapped to one style.

After one game I noticed a few little bits of flock wearing thin on the swirly bases, but that happens with all terrain... it's there to be gamed on!
I'm looking into a light dusting down with matt Varnish spray to make it harder wearing.
If it works / turns out good I'll add that on to the tutorial. The only thing is too much spray will make the static grass go a bit funny/sticky covered in mildew/ or something
Is there a better way to fix the flock down? watered down PVA, won't that pull the Flock off the board?

Do you use a ladder for those top down shots or do you have a harness suspension above your table?

/Sharp looking terrain.

Great stuff, I particularly like your use of the city ruins to create edges for the gardens. I'd be interested in doing a bit bigger versions of what you've done. Maybe a cemetary. I imagine they look really cool in the 41st millenium.

The 21st century will have a number of great cities. You’ll choose between cities of great population density and those that are like series of islands in the forest. - Bernard Tschumi

The whole galaxy is a cemetery.

As for the "gardens" I really like them, but with the buildings in war torn ruins, it looks a little disjointed. Maybe some war damage on the trees/green spaces?

sorry, I meant watered pva under the flock. it tends to go pretty well. Try hitting the flock with cheap firm hold hairspray when you are done?!

I love the look of the Urban Gardens, I think I'll include some in my city board. Maybe some roof gardens too!

@Panic:

What are you using for the large, round grate on your urban table there?

It's right at the bottom, left of the big triangle. I want to add some big things like that into my table. Any help is greatly appreciated.

While I agree that the swirl looks kinda goofy, I guess it has an advantage in model placement. The swirls, I've noticed, are roughly the same size as a standard base. Or so it seems. There you go, that can be your cover. Anyone that doubts that excuse gets a powerfoot to the groin a-la Angry Marines

yeah,
I've recently made these forests plain-jane non-swirly scorched grass forests!... I'll be updating the article soon, to show a more basic scorched grass forest.

But I'll keep swirly forests option online too!

Unfortunately, I have no pics as this was ages ago, but if you can't afford citadel trees, or you'd rather have a different, less symetrical look to your forest's trees, a good way to make trees is by taking a few lengths of wire, folding them and tying them together into the shape of your tree, then covering them in plaster putty. I had 3 huge forests for my old board, but they're now covered in pink cracks and holes where chunks of the polystyrene have come off. Ahh well. I have a Moonscape/Ashworld/Urban colored board now. My woodland board lost all it's flock. Not to mention, it was covered in equal measures of red ink and my blood from modelling knife accidents

If I ever decide to make another woodland board though, I'll be sure to post some WIP shots of how I made the trees. They come out with a nice texture, and they're the perfect thickness too.
