You know,the Imperium is eternal and our Emperor isn't dead.

The wishlist of heretics and xenos doesn't matter.

parallels can be drawn between the imperium and the roman empire, in which case it will probably be an combination of factors. if the imperium does collapse, the galaxy would become a big seething mass of chaos and death, much like it is now, just with less organisation.

space marine chapters are largely independant, so it wouldnt effect them much.

the adeptus machanicus has more tanks and war machines that you can shake a stick at, so they have the ability to go and take pretty much whatever they want.

IG army group commanders would probably carve out their own little empires and fight amongst themselves and others.

the cadian gate may well collapse without a constant supply of resource, which would enable the CSM to run riot for a little while, until enough people gang up on them to stop them.

orks would do as they always would, same with nids, same with eldar, same with tau.

the SoB would take on the role of the catholic church through the dark and middle ages, a rich and powerful organisation, with its own army and territories that tries to tell others what to do.

it would be interesting to find out what would happen to the inquisition. they dont really have a place in the galaxy without the imperium. i can imagine some of them would turn renegade and become rulers of their own little galactic kingdoms somewhere. maybe some would keep to their previous principles and try and carve out heretics, demons and xenos scum through out the tiny empires that would develop.

there is too much going on in the galaxy to let one faction rise above the others for any significant amount of time.

According to the actual 40K fluff, the Emperor's Tarot has prophesized that the Imperium (and for that matter, the whole galaxy) will fall when a massive Ork Waaagh battles a gigantic Tyranid Hive Fleet.

Everyone else gets swept away by the green-&-purple tide.

Where is that from?

Recent background indicates that the Imperium is falling, but i dont see Orks as being a major factor, just opportunists.

Frankly I suspect a double whammy of Necrons and Tyranids.

To be honest, I don't remember. After posting my reply, I went on a quest to find my source, but I met with failure. I remember it was an official publication, but if it was a White Dwarf, a Codex, or a previous rulebook... no idea.

After the Imperium falls Tau bring everyone under their loving wing, and everything is A-OK in 40k. They are the good guys

The Emperor will be cured and assume control of the Empire. Unfortunately, 2 days into his rule he'll slip in the shower and die. The entire empire listens to dashboard confessional for 3 weeks then dies of melancholy.

The Imperium will fall upon the ranks of the alien, the heretic and the fungal and rid the galaxy of them.

yeah, the imperium ARE kinda evil. I mean, the tau are civilized, but yet the imperium kills its women and children? But yet, SM are so darn cool, so who cares if their evil, ha.

I thought there was an even bigger 'Nid fleet (by bigger I mean HUGELY GINORMOUSLY MASSIVE) that was attacking from underneath the galaxy, so it could reach Terra and other hugely important worlds in the Imperium without having to destroy millions of worlds on the way. This would rip the heart out of the Imperium and it would be everyman for himself. The Space Marines would then try to bring order and probably fight the Xenos menace (seems an understatement) but will lose.

Or they could do a runner with colony ships crammed with people and try and create a perfect civilisation in another galaxy. Similar to the times before the Horus Heresy.

Unless Abadon, watching all this decides to launch his biggest crusade yet. This would face no opposition as the Imperium is in tatters with no-one to organise troop and supply movements.

The Eldar, seeing this would try to fight Chaos, but they are already a dying race (the future destined for mankind?) and cannot face chaos alone.

The Tau might try to enlarge their empire but will probably be more concerned about the Tyranids.

The Dark Eldar will try to capture more slaves and turn to Chaos in order to survive.

Not sure what the Necron's agenda is?

And the Orks will just join in the killing

So, yeh, its byebye to humanity

But this will never happen, because the WH40K will effectively be over and GW have a system that cannot be expanded and therefore no more £££.

The Tau will invent the following things.

1. An adaptive viral plague that turns Tyrannids into sausages.
2. An adaptive viral plague that turns Orks into mushrooms.
3. An adaptive nanotech plague that turns Necrons into barbecue grills.

The galaxy will then have the biggest outdoor party in history.

The real answer is that the Tyrannids are running from something far more scarier than themselves. The humans are just in their way.....the answer is Giant Anteaters.

guerra, if the emperor was killed, then he would become the star child! gosh

additionallly, the imperium's power will be trimmed by the tau, but not in any noticeable way, the eldar will merely continue existing as per usual, the orks will clash with the nids in an epic battle and the holy imperium will wade in with cleansing purifying fire in hand and mop up the results, leaving the imperium and the tau as the last remaining powers. from there all of the space marines will abscond after becoming sick of the inquisition and the high lords of terra and learn how to breed, then they shall create their own secluded space marine nation of awesomeness and somehow find a complete stc library and win to a huge extent, all hail the mighty space marines!!!

slowly and painfully the imperium will fall, the adaptus astarteries will go insane and all phykers will become corrupt
