so hordes of barbarians are the way that the imperium falls? wow could never of guessed that, i would of thought it would be the necrons that would finally wipe out humanity.

Abaddon rallies all the Renegade Chapters and goes on yet another Black Crusade, crushing all the Loyalist Swine in his path and Chaos wins the really big conflict thing that happens, it'd be like like the Horus Heresy +1 except this time Abaddon kills the pathetic corpse god (this is just my opinion, I'm not trying to offend anyone). After many millions of years humanity becomes a thing of the past and the denizens of the Warp descend upon this plane and consume everything.

That or the Tau unite the universe and everyone is all happy and such.

I dunno, maybe it just died out. That or they were murdered by various different xenos. Although I do like the Daemon idea.

If the Tyranids want to attack this galaxy in force then nothing can stop them. Right now they are sending the smallest of forces and all the Imperium can do is divert their attention to the Orks. But it's easy enough to say in the fluff that the Tyranids choose to bring their attention to another galaxy and leave this one relatively alone.

The only other one with the potential to wipe out the galaxy would be the Necrons. The C'Tan can create more and the numbers who are buried on tomb worlds are unknown. The only enemy a C'Tan fears is another C'Tan. Eventually one will be left with no natural enemies in the galaxy to contend with.

I know Chaos is a sexy choice to take over, but chaos is fueled by alien souls. Remove the souls and chaos dies away. Necrons (and possibly tyranids) have no souls to devour or corrupt making those two races anathema to chaos' survival.

Grimdark aside, in a world of heretical plot advancement I think the imperium could fall, but humanity wouldn’t.

Say the Emperor’s life support system failed. He died. The instant casualties would be enormous. Every one of the emperors starships would suddenly lose their guiding light, they would become instantly trapped within the warp. The loss of his psychic presence in the warp would be catastrophic. The forces of chaos would become insanely powerful. Psykers across the Imperium would become possessed almost instantly. Chaos would reign supreme. They would flood out of the eye of terror in an almost unstoppable tide of horror and begin to rage across the materium.

Without faster than light travel the planets of the imperium would become isolated. Independent planets may survive, yet without help from the imperium many would fall into anarchy. The imperium would have no ability to recognize or counter threats moving through imperial space. The tyranids, orks, chaos and necrons would all rampage across the galaxy and begin a war for dominance in which humanity would merely play the part of an extra.

What happens to the rest of the imperial forces is questionable. The Space Marines would no doubt be able to defend their home planets, but what would they do when their god is dead? The man they have had so much faith in is gone. They would have no reason for zeal. Others would say they would fight harder in an attempt to avenge his death, trying to make their inevitable downfall glorious.

Like others have said inquisitors would probably try and carve out their own empire, some may capitalize on the chaos and profit.

The men and women of the ordo hereticus and ordo malleus would probably be the hardest hit. With their reliance on faith they would be a like an unarmed soldier.

The legions of the imperial guard would resort to survival tactics, defending their own planets and trying to weather the storm.

The casualties would be enormous, I’d imagine that the majority of humanity would perish.

Humanity would enter an age much like the age of strife from old times.

But then the emperor would be born again. The star child would rise, and a new great crusade would begin. Slowly but surely, mankind would again rise to prominence, ready to face what would undoubtedly be a galaxy in which the three main powers, chaos, necrons and tyranids (I can’t imagine any of the other races being serious contestants for rulers of the galaxy, orks at a stretch, but they’d probably still just act as a constant annoyance) are locked in a brutal war.

Totally. If you think about it the Emperor really is pathetic .

Another possibility could be as simple as the Tyranids eating everyone.

Even if the tyranids ate everyone the necron would survive, simply because the necron aren't eatable.

The necrons arn't edible, but the ground beneath them sure is, so I say they'll get cut up for simply being in the way!

Tyranids eating everything gets my vote. Lets not forget they're invading the galaxy because they ran out of food in a previous galaxy. They ate an entire galaxy!

The Emporer slowly fades... Rivalry with each other will leads to more Space Marine Chapters going Renegade and stepping out of the Reach of the Imperium and its wrath. They will either fall to the taint, hire their services to 'less obviously evil' Xenos (Tau, Eldar, etc), perhaps leading to tension in the Tau Empire or carve out 'Protectorates' to rule themselves as petty 'True Imperia."

The Imperial Guard proves insufficient to hold back the Ork/Tyranid threats while the Tau/Space Marine/Eldar?remainder of Imperium alliance falls back in an attempt to hold a bulwark position against the twin foes, perhaps shepherding it towards the Eye, in the hope that the Tyranid, Necron, Ork and Chaos Threats cancel each other out.

Wether this bulwark plan succeeds or not leads to the survival or death of the galaxy itself. Not to mention the interference of as yet unknown Xeno Empires.

I'm sorry, wha?.......

GW controls the universe, the Imperium is a lynchpin to the whole 40k universe, so it will never fall.

If GW went away, I think the Imperium would eventually win. Somebody would just find an STC and the Imperium would be back to it's glory days.

I don't really know, as fluff changes constantly and this is all hypothetical guessing anyway...

The Imperium will attempt to reform their government system. the resulting paper work would reach critical mass, and create an event horizon, and the black hole will suck the entire galaxy in.

That's right. death by paperwork.

It wont .......period lol I think or hope that it will go back to glory days but then it wouldn't be Grimdark future then would it? If I had to say how it would fall then the death of The Emperor would be first on the list, worlds split apart and everybody fends for themselves, Terra mite even be swallowed up by the warp from within the vaults of Terra the Emperor unable to hold them back any longer

Silly.

They wont fall as long as GW jerks off to Ultramarines.

Imperium wont ever die, from a GW perspective.

Eventually, for lulz, the Squats will come back and fire a Huge cannonball the size of the universe, and just crush every planet.

And thats how our world started.

I say the farthest GW can REALLY let the series go is a be all end all war for the fate of the galaxy.

Emperor dies, (may or may not be reborn), all of the 'missing' primarchs (Vulkan, Leman, Guilliman, etc) come back. And you see them bring back the legions, and its essentially another great crusade. That seems to be the end of days lore for the Imperium at least and would make for an awesome expansion.

I mean the Imperium falling without any of these legends coming true would totally suck. Unless of course the Imperium falls and they come back to reunite it along with a reborn Emperor.

To answer the question "how will the Imperium Fall?" It will fall when Mr. Whipple stops delivering the Charmin to the God Emperor. Then all everything shall fall, and Chaos will rule the universe. Then it will up to the Brawny Man to save the day.

In the everlasting battle for eternia prime

My prediction is that a member of the Adeptus Custodes will be corrupted, by demons slowly destroying his mind; then in a defiant move he destroys the emperors life support system. Instantly causing every starship in warp transit to be destroyed by Daemons of the warp destroying a third of the imperiums resources.

Whilst they are still recovering the legions of chaos come forth from the eye of terror led by a re-incarnated Horus. They destroy the Cadian gate and continue onwards destroying any resistance.
The Marine chapters decide that they will all join and make a last stand somwhere, which causes all of the marines in the imperium to be destroyed when Horus virus bombs the system before systematically destroying the worlds there.

The imperium by now is dead and the Tau take it upon themselves to look after the survivors; but the Necrons on every world rise. They destroy many Tau held worlds leaving only one hundred Tau and Humans. However in a giant clash the Ctan and Chaos Daemons fight destroying every last Daemon and Ctan, this in turn causes the necrons to faze out.

Then the armies of Chaos and all other lifeforms in the whole wh40k (except the 100 humans and tau) are destroyed by a massive bomb which is every imperial (or ex imperial) planet exploding destroying all.

The Tau and Humans are the only survivors and continue their races in a small system in peace, the war of all wars has ended, humanity is weak but still alive. The imperium once a great power is nothing, chaos and all other lifeforms are destroyed, there is peace atlast.

Pretty long I know.
