After speaking to a couple of independant traders of GW stuff the concensus seems tobe that their sales of Warhammer fantasy will drop due to people playing on-line instead. This due to the impact that WoW had on sales when that appeared. Has anyone else spoke to their flgs about this?

From what i've gathered they're not worried. It's not like people haven't already been sinking a ton of time into MMOs. Warhammer online has very little in common with the tabletop game in terms of gameplay, just fluff. If anything it seems it should boost sales (at the least of individual minis that players can say are their character) since it will give the fluff and world more exposure.

If the MMO is good, then I propose that for every committed miniatures customer who puts his modeling on hold, the hobby will gain 10 other new recruits.

I agree if anything this will help mini sales.

World of WarhammerCraft will only attract people who'd already sink way too much time and money into an antisocial pursuit.
Thus, there'll be an initial hit, followed by people coming back and bringing newbies as they realise that it's not actually Warhammer at all.

Some how it doesn't seem anit-social to play and talk to countless people all day long while playing a game... (of table-top or MMO variety)

But hey everyone has their opinions.

Come to think of it anti-social would be more like oh I don't know spending countless hours huddle away in a room painting and talking to mini's all day long...

Oh the irony.

If anything it will bring new people to the hobby.

I'd hazard a guess that alot of current GW players will get into it, along with people tired of WOW>

However as an introduction to GW, its hard to go past and at the very least will prompt players to find out more.

I'm sure GW aren't worried too much about a mini selling hit when the game will generate a continuing income stream.

Well I kind of moved near Toronto, actually.

if anything it is advertising, although it doesn't come close to the advertising that was Dawn of War.

I think it will bring more players to the table top. I got three people into 40K because they played Dawn of War and didnt relize that it was also a table top minature game. I inveited them out to our local to see the game played and they were hooked. It works well as a introduction. Also as seein how it was GW that came up with big green orcs you cant really call it world of warhammercraft seeing that the war between man and orc has been happening in warhammer longer. I truly beleave that the WoW machine is scared ive been seeing alot of commercials on TV here in the last few days and right before the launch of WaR. Also Bliazzard has merged with another gameing CO. dont know which off hand but im dissapointed with the move.

I'm calling it that because it's basically WoW, only warhammer fantasy instead of Warcraft. Thus, World of WarhammerCraft.
It's widely known that blizzard routinely rip off GW's concepts while changing them enough to not be sued.

Ive played both, the open beta and WoW. Dont get me wrong i enjoyed WoW just got sick and tired at the end of waiting for hours to get a party going and spending hours in a instance just to get some item and if you died well that was that rinse and repeat. WaR feels different, havent played it that long though but hopefuly it wont degenerate into my item is better then yours in high level play. I recomend the game to anyone who likes the fluff of Warhammer and those who have played WoW will truly get alot of the game.

With regard to paying...

Had a look on Amazon, and it said you must have a Credit Card.

Is this Amazon just being a bit spazzy, or are Debit Cards really ruled out?

I've been hanging out on WaR forums for a while now, and if anything its going to add to the player base, i've seen a lot of folks try Warhammer since they discovered the game, and more making the indication they plan on trying it.

Its slightly similar to how those WoW figs sell due to players wanting to get anything relating to merchandising, with WaR they just happen to have a Wargame attached.

On a side note as someone who played WoW for nearly 2yrs, had 4characters 60 or higher, inc 70, had loads of chars overall, tried all the classes etc.
WaR feels nothing like WoW, its miles better, once they get past that first stage, of getting the game running 100%, start talking about expansions etc, I fully believe WoW is toast, and tbh I'm expecting a WoW 2 announcement within 6months.

I know a lot of people got interested in 40k because of Dawn of War, I imagine this will be similar. Look at all the stuff people buy for Warcraft because it is their faction or character type. Well GW already has it all ready for you!

I definitly see more people coming to the hobby because of this, particularly younger people (Yes I too am young, but I've been around the hobby and gaming my entire life.)

Just a personal opinion, perhaps the stock market over the next few months will show absolute results.

No more, or less so than EQ and WoW did. People have X hours a day for recreation. If they prefer the video games, they'll do that. If they prefer the minis they'll do that. The only way a computer game will kill the mini's is if they make it exactly the same. That's why Dawn of War was not Warhammer 40K, it was Starcraft with 40K graphics. They haven't made a directly translated video game of their miniature games since Blood Bowl and Final Liberation to the best of my knowledge. Notice those were also the much less popular versions that became specialist games.

My WHFB armies were Bretonians and Tomb Kings.

If nothing else, I imagine sales of Battle For Skull Pass will go up. People try out WAR, go to the mall, and say "Hey, this place is selling WAR toys?! Why didn't they annouce they were releasing this stuff?" then go in and find out what's actually going on, and pick up a BfSP set to see if they like it. Or they find out about the actual background then go "Wait, is that a mech/tank/spaceship?" and pick up an Assault on Black Reach instead.

Plus the two people who get Mines of Moria instead. :p

What would be sweet, and make GW a fair bit of cash probably, would be if they tooled up something like the WoW Figureprints setup, except making warhammer minis. Want to try out an army of your chosen faction (or your Chosen faction, as the case may be) $60-$75 and we'll send you a mini of your character (some assembly and painting required). Originally I thought it'd be cool if they made up special character sheets for them also, but I just can't bring myself to accept beating beaten down on the tabletop by the great Chaos Champion "Pwnsyu Sohard".

This and/or a new "Mordheim" rule set based around the Scenarios/RvR where "Guilds" or "parties" vie for experience, money, and gear. Perhaps even having "public quest" or "dungeon" lists to offset that there would really only be two lists, Order and Destruction.

I also want Special Character rules for my Grimluk mini form the Collector's Edition.

Computer games do not deliver the same kind of experience as miniature games, of building an army, making terrain, and so on, and having your friends round and going to the pub afterwards to discuss the battle.

Have MMORPGs killed tabletop RPGs?

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

i dont think it will impact it. when i break out my figs for a game i dont get kicked off of the table or hit with a blue screen of death every 15 minutes so that alone will keep me at the table more.

No. I've seen MORE RPG groups pop up in Baton Rouge/New Orleans since WoW was released.

Sadly true

In other remarks, I play Warhammer Online. It's got me back to thinking about doing a second fantasy army (or rather selling most of the first and doing what I should have done in the first place)

I really think that these games share the same name and that's about it. The experience of playing is totally different. This IS a good way to play games when you have no other way to do it. A great intro for those who otherwise would have no idea what Warhammer is all about. Even so, I think that in general, some gamers are more into console and PC games. Some are more into tabletop games. Some are into both. But I don't think a computer game can totally substitute for a tabletop game.

TYRANID ARMY and more for sale. Many Price Drops. 40K and More.
